His career was beset with dis appointments and frustrations which would have broken a less resi lient nature. In his youth he could not find the money with which to complete his education, and all his life he struggled with poverty... Physically he was not brave; he was, indeed, neurot ically fearful. yet his language was bold, and he constantly provoked aggression.
