I wanted to read this book for awhile, but there was a few things that kept me from picking it up. Even at a discount this book was usually 30 or 25 dollars, and that just seemed like a lot for a book that doesn't even contain pages. I've enjoyed some stories with him in it, but it's usually some kind of e I wanted to read this book for awhile, but there was a few things that kept me from picking it up. I've enjoyed some stories with him in it, but it's usually some kind of event, or Justice League story. I thought I would talk about those points now that I've actually read and purchased the book. I figured at that price it was a steal, even if it turned out to have some production issues. The colors do seem to have a washed out effect, but it DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore as bad as some reviews led me to believe. It actually has the look of being colored by water colors, which I think goes DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore with a comic. He just has a ton of great powers and seemingly can't be stop. A story that takes away his weakness to Kryptonite would make that even worse. However, this story was meant as a way to depower him. A Superman who struggles is one where I become interested. This book is better than most people are giving it credit for, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "DC Classic". It has an important DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore in both Superman's and DC's history but it's not something you Must have in your collection. I'm thinking that DC chose this book to be the first in this Classic Line because it hadn't been collected before, and it represents a change in both Superman and DC. The story is fairly simple. An accident turns all the Kryptonite on earth into lead, leaving Superman only vulnerable to magic. DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore thing that happens is an energy double of Superman is created and being close to the creature drains Superman's powers, making him less and less The end result is having a Superman where writers can't just simply throw Kryptonite into a story to slow Superman down, or have him easily defeat any enemy with his massive powers. In other words: A more Human Superman. The best part of this book is the art. I loved it. There where some parts that made me thing of old EC horror comics with it's use of shadow and color. And as I said before I liked the watercolor look. This is not a great book, but if you can get a hold of a copy it's worth reading. O'Neil avoids his typical pitfall of being overly preachy, and Swan - inked by Murphy Anderson - looks better than ever. Actually, I'm typically indifferent to Swan - heresy for a Superman fan, I know, but his stuff's a little stiff - so I was really happy and surprised to see how sharp it looked here. Read the graphic novel for sure, but make sure you read the preface and especially the Afterword by Dennis O'Neill. So they tried to do the same thing with Superman. After all, what can you do with a character that is invulnerable This is a wonderful book, not for the plot, but for the insight it provides into the history of DC comics during the changes in the 's. After all, what can you do with a character that is invulnerable to pretty much everything? Previous writers created kryptonite not part of the original legacy. As you may recall, green kryptonite would weaken and could theoretically kill Superman. Anyway, as you might infer from the title, they destroy all DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore kryptonite not a spoiler! This book is filled with many instances of gloriously kitschy dialogue. Here are a few of my favorites: 1 Page Superman eats some kryptonite after it has been rendered harmless, and says "Mmmm Not bad! Can I buy you a cup of coffee?. They never celebrate when they save the world as the justice league but two thieves warrants a "celebration"? Superman thinks he is somehow responsible, but it really doesn't matter. Superman tunes into a small television rabbit ears, yay! I've isolated the virus from space And how did the doctor discover this little gem? Despite utilising as its main theme an element I view as completely unnecessary - the 'depowering' of Superman, this collection by Dennis O'Neill contains what is maybe my favourite pre-'Crisis' Superman tale. The art by Curt Swan is the very essence of that period's Superman, his take on the character being arguably the most iconic of all time. Ironically, the premise of a depowered Kal-El runs counter to the two images most associated with this series. The first, a cover showing Superman bust Despite utilising as its main theme an element I view as completely unnecessary - the 'depowering' of Superman, this collection by Dennis DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore contains what is maybe my favourite pre-'Crisis' Superman tale. The first, a cover showing Superman busting free from Kryptonite chains drawn by O'Neill's most well known 'Batman'collaborator, Neal Adams and the second, a panel showing the Man Of Steel happily munching away on a rock of Kryptonite with no apparent concern for its previous ability to kill him. DC Library: Superman Kryptonite Nevermore found resistance to Kryptonite aside, there is real danger in store for our hero as a mysterious force has drained and will later duplicate his powers. The idea was to bring Superman back down to Earth somewhat, and was in keeping with writer Dennis O'Neill's style at the time as are appearances from I-Ching and Wonder Woman towards the conclusionhaving done a lot of work to restore Batman's edge after the relentless camp of the post-Wertham and television years. Curt Swan was the artist on Superman for over three decades, prior to his death indrawing the daily Superman comic as well as his longer-form comics adventures.

    Alan Moore’s Miracleman: Harbinger of the Modern Age of Comics Jeremy Larance Introduction On May 26, 2014, Marvel Comics ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times for Alan Moore’s Miracleman, Book One: A Dream of Flying, calling the work “the series that redefined comics… in print for the first time in over 20 years.” Such an ad, particularly one of this size, is a rare move for the comic book industry in general but one especially rare for a graphic novel consisting primarily of just four comic books originally published over thirty years before- hand. Of course, it helps that the series’ author is a profitable lumi- nary such as Moore, but the advertisement inexplicably makes no reference to Moore at all. Instead, Marvel uses a blurb from Time to establish the reputation of its “new” re-release: “A must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” That line came from an article written by Graeme McMillan, but it is worth noting that McMillan’s full quote from the original article begins with a specific reference to Moore: “[Miracleman] represents, thanks to an erratic publishing schedule that both predated and fol- lowed Moore’s own Watchmen, Moore’s simultaneous first and last words on ‘realism’ in superhero comics—something that makes it a must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” Marvel’s excerpt, in other words, leaves out the very thing that McMillan claims is the most important aspect of Miracle- man’s critical reputation as a “missing link” in the study of Moore’s influence on the superhero genre and on the “medium as a whole.” To be fair to Marvel, for reasons that will be explained below, Moore refused to have his name associated with the Miracleman reprints, so the company was legally obligated to leave his name off of all advertisements.

I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! “ (Daniels, 1998, p. 1-7). Some people might not recognize the reference to early radio shows and cartoons, but most people will recognize the name Superman. Superman has become such an amazing cultural icon, that almost everyone knows his name, and often his weakness, his powers, the colors of his suit and the name of his arch nemesis. It’s part of common knowledge and everyone has been exposed to him at some time or another. Since the creation of Superman in 1938, comic book research and literary studies have come along way. These allows us to more deeply analyze and understand, as well as unravel the deeper signified meanings associated with the iconic Superman (Wandtke, 2007, p. 25). He is seen as a superhero, but also upholds “truth, justice and the American way” (Watt-Evans, 2006, p. 1). Some see him as Christ-like or Jewish, and even as a fascist. He fulfills some of our needs from the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and also expresses different messages depending on the medium in which he is portrayed. There is no end to the Superman merchandise, but Superman as an icon, can change a person.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane!...It’s superman! And then we knew it was time to sit down to listen or to watch the latest episode of the superhero Superman. He was created by the minds of men in Cleveland, Ohio and made his debut in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938 and he has entertained us and amazed generations of people ever since. How could you not like a man who came to earth to avoid destruction, was stronger than any human being, could fly, think faster, run faster, freeze things with his breath, and on top of it all had x-ray vision. He could do anything, especially what we couldn’t. I know he was sometimes given a darker side in the modern movies, but not in the original shows. He was truly a hero who watched over and protected the people of this planet. He was invincible and could not be defeated. He had no weaknesses…except one. Kryptonite! Kryptonite was the radioactive element from his home planet of Krypton. When he got close to its ore form he was sapped of all his strength and super powers.
