During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Rajasugunasekar Institute of Forest Genetics & Tree Breeding, Coimbatore-641 002, India _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Plant secondary metabolites derived from weeds, medicinal and aromatic plants have been found to be a protective biopesticidal agent, cost effective and safe to ecosystem & public health. In the present investigation, the essential oil of Lantana camara collected from the different agro-climatic conditions of Tamilnadu regions has proven to be interesting source of terpenoid derivatives for their biopesticidal properties against some of the defoliators of forestry tree species. Bioassay confirmation of those terpenoids identified from the essential oil was tested on the target pests such as Hyblaea puera, Eligma narcissus and Atteva fabriciella at different concentrations both in the laboratory and field conditions. The bioactivity interms of larval mortality was observed when the early instars were exposed to preformulated oil applications. Keywords : Lantana camara , essential oil, chemical constituents, biopesticidal properties and preformulated oil. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION Lantana camara is a noxious weed of Verbenaceae comprises 650 species spread out over 60 countries, and has been introduced as an ornamental / hedge plant which is now abundantly occurring as a weed throughout India. The oil is used for curing various biological disorders [1], highly toxic to pests [2], repellent effect against stored grains pests supporting indigenous grain protection [3]. -

Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, Department of Pharmacognosy, Pimpri, Pune-411018, India Abstract: Over the past decade, herbal and ayurvedic drugs have become a subject of world importance, with both medicinal and economical implications. A regular and widespread use of herbs throughout the world has increased serious concerns over their quality, safety and efficacy. Thus, a proper scientific evidence or assessment has become the criteria for acceptance of herbal health claims. Ailanthus excelsa Roxb. is a tree belonging to family Simaroubaceae, indigenous to Central and Southern India. Commonly it is known as a plant of Heaven. The traditional claims, phytochemical investigations and pharmacological evaluation and some ayurvedic formulations provide the backbone to make this tree as a plant of Heaven. This is not wrong to say that it is largactil because it has number of activities. This review article explores the traditional knowledge or claims along with pharmacognostical, phytochemical, pharmacological and future aspects of this plant. Over many centuries humans have been mining the bounties of nature for discovering new phytoconstituent that have been used for the treatment of number of diseases; many such treatments are useful even today as modern day medicine. Emerging evidence also suggests that search is still continuing for harnessing active compounds from nature in combating human illnesses and it also leads the path to search out new active natural and novel semisynthetic or synthetic compounds. -

Bioassay studies revealed that the virus is highly pathogenic to H. puera. There was no cross infectivity to three other forest insect pests, viz., Eutectona machaeralis, Eligma narcissus and Atteva fabriciella. Three species of bacterial pathogens, viz., Bacillus cereus, B. thuringiensis var thuringiensis and Enterobacter aerogenes were also recorded from H. puera. B. thuringiensis was recorded as a stray case of infection and was highly pathogenic and caused 100% mortality in laboratory experiments. Low incidence of B. cereus infection was seen in H. puera while E. aerogenes was consistently isolated from field infected larvae. Except a new species of Hirsutella no other fungal pathogens could be observed on H. puera. No microbial pathogens were recorded from the teak skeletonizer Eutectona machaeralis. The fungal pathogen Beauveria bassiana was found to cause larval mortality of the teak sapling borer Sahyadrassus malabaricus. Two species of fungal pathogens viz. Paecilomyces farinosus and P. fumasoroseus were consistently recorded on the pupae of the yellow hairy caterpillar Eligma narcissus, an insect pest of Ailanthus triphysa.
