Taxonomic Revision of Genus Prosopis L. in Egypt

Azer Flora and Phytotaxonomy Researches Department, Horticultural Research Institute, Agricultural Research Center, Dokki, Giza, Egypt ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to survey the new record invasive alien Prosopis juliflora and clarifies the taxonomic relationships among genus Prosopis L. in Egypt. The wild species are Prosopis farcta (Banks & Sol.) Macbride and Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. The cultivated species are Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce; Prosopis glandulosa Torr. and Prosopis strombulifera (Lam.) Benth. Based on morphological traits, the numerical analysis divided the Prosopis species into three clusters. Cluster one included: Prosopis glandulosa and Prosopis juliflora. Cluster two included: Prosopis farcta and Prosopis cineraria. Cluster three included: Prosopis strombulifera. According to the degree of similarity, the species of cluster one had the highest ratio (75%) followed by (55.6%) between the species of cluster two. Moreover, the highest ratio (33.3%) was recorded between Prosopis strombulifera and Prosopis juliflora, while the lowest ratio (20.8%) was recorded between Prosopis strombulifera and Prosopis cineraria. This work recoded Prosopis juliflora to the Flora of Egypt. Key words: Taxonomy, Prosopis, alien species, numerical analysis, similarity level, Egypt. Introduction The genus Prosopis L. belongs to the family Leguminosae, subfamily Mimosoideae, tribe Mimosae (Burkart, 1976; Sherry et al., 2011). It comprises 44 species and five sections based on observed morphological differences among studied taxa (Burkart, 1976). The five sections included: Prosopis; Anonychium; Strombocarpa; Monilicarpa and Algarobia (Burkart, 1976; Landeras et al., 2004; Elmeer and Almalki, 2011). -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent. -

Rajasugunasekar Institute of Forest Genetics & Tree Breeding, Coimbatore-641 002, India _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Plant secondary metabolites derived from weeds, medicinal and aromatic plants have been found to be a protective biopesticidal agent, cost effective and safe to ecosystem & public health. In the present investigation, the essential oil of Lantana camara collected from the different agro-climatic conditions of Tamilnadu regions has proven to be interesting source of terpenoid derivatives for their biopesticidal properties against some of the defoliators of forestry tree species. Bioassay confirmation of those terpenoids identified from the essential oil was tested on the target pests such as Hyblaea puera, Eligma narcissus and Atteva fabriciella at different concentrations both in the laboratory and field conditions. The bioactivity interms of larval mortality was observed when the early instars were exposed to preformulated oil applications. The present study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial activity present in the leaves, stem and pods of Prosopis cineraria. Methods: The Agar well diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial activity of various parts of Prosopis cineraria. Four fungal and four bacterial strains were used as test microbes. Results: The study was revealed that all the three parts of the plant Prosopis cineraria showed the inhibitory zone against the microorganisms. The highest zone of inhibition was showed by P. cineraria pods against P. funiculosum (16±0.92 mm) and by P. cineraria leaves against S. griseus (20±1.10mm). Conclusion: The antimicrobial activity found in the various parts of the plant may be due to the presence of secondary metabolites isolated from the plant such as flavonoids and steroids. -

Its stems have found extensive usage by some ethnic communities in reliving body pain and in treating snake bite. However, detailed scientific information is not available to identify the plant material and to ascertain its quality and purity. Therefore in this background meticulous pharmacognostical and chromatographic study of stem bark has been carried to establish the pharmacognostical standards and phytochemical evaluation. Physico-chemical parameters were studied for systemic identification and authentification of leaves. A qualitative fingerprinting of Tecomella undulata (TU), extracts have been performed by HPLC methods. Transverse Sections of stem bark shows presence of various characteristic features like single layer thick walled epidermis, some of its cell forming non- glandular and glandular hairs. In physico-chemical evaluation the water soluble ash 4.02±0.21% w/w is higher than acid insoluble ash 1.49±0.08% w/w. -

Druce is a deep rooted, nitrogen fixing, multipurpose tree endemic to the hot deserts of India. The tree is known locally as Jandi or Khejri (India), Jand (Pakistan), and Ghaf (Arabic). Its synonym is P. spicigera, it is a very significant tree of the Thar Desert of India, contributing to ecological stability of the region and providing extensive support to human beings, livestock, The antibacterial activity of the various extracts of the stem bark of Prosopis cineraria (Linn.) . The extracts were prepared by continuous hot percolation method with chloroform and methanol. Aqueous extract was prepared by maceration. The presence of phytosterols, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids were detected in the preliminary phytochemical tests. Ges. 102 65-93 München, 15.10.2012 ISSN 0340-4943 On the winter and spring aspect of the Macrolepidoptera fauna of Jordan with remarks on the biology of some species (Lepidoptera: Tineoidea, Cossoidea, Bombycoidea, Papilionoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea) Dirk STADIE and Lutz LEHMANN († 1) Abstract The results of two lepidopterological expeditions to Jordan from December 20 to December 30, 2008 (provinces of Irbid, Karak, Tafila und Ma’an) and March 19 to March 25, 2009 (provinces: Zarqa, Tafila, Irbid and Balqa) are presented. A total of 166 species of Macrolepidoptera could be recorded, among them 21 species new for Jordan. Desertobia heloxylonia lawrencei subsp. n. is described. The female genitalia of Odontopera jordanaria (STAUDINGER, 1898) comb. n., are figured for the first time. The larvae of Odontopera jordanaria STAUDINGER, 1898, Minucia wiskotti (PÜNGELER, 1902), Allophyes benedictina (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola pauli (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola scabra (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola staudingeri RONKAY, 1984, Conistra acutula (STAUDINGER, 1892), Polymixis apora (STAUDINGER, 1898) and Polymixis juditha (STAUDINGER, 1898) are described and figured. Introduction Our knowledge of the winter aspect of the macrolepidoptera fauna of the southwestern Palaearctic region is still lower compared to other seasons. It has been shown during expeditions that in countries with subtropical- mediterranean climate an interesting macrolepidoptera fauna with numerous poorly known or even new species could be ascertained, in the eremic as well as in the steppe and mediterranean zone.
