Oil occurrences in crystalline basement rocks, southern Norway – comparison with deeply weathered basement rocks in southern Sweden LINNÉA GUNTERBERG Gunterberg, L., 2013: Oil occurrences in crystalline basement rocks, southern Norway – comparison with deeply weathered basement rocks in southern Sweden. Dissertations in Geology at Lund University, No. 344, 14 pp. 15 hp (15 ECTS credits). Abstract: Rising oil prices and an increasing global use of fossil fuels make the survey of alternative petroleum reservoirs of great importance. Instead of drilling in regular sedimentary successions, the possibility of investigat- ing reservoirs in crystalline basement is in many places of economic interest. Reservoirs in crystalline basement rock are producing oil in several countries e.g. Vietnam and Yemen, and oil exploration including drillings are made continuously to look for reservoirs in basement rocks in other places. The Norwegian company Lundin Nor- way AS has found traces of petroleum in weathered granites in drill cores from the Utsira High, southwestern Nor- way. Drilling and survey offshore can be expensive and difficult while analog research onshore could result in sig- nificant information and increased knowledge. Bømlo basement is related in age and petrology with the basement of Utsira High. This makes the, easy accessed, onshore island to a high quality survey area. The weathered material with petroleum occurrences from Utsira High makes Ivön, southeastern Sweden, a key locality since the latter area yields several good exposures where the relationships between deep weathered basement and unweathered base- ment can be studied. This thesis details the development of petroleum occurrences in crystalline basement. LINNÉA GUNTERBERG Gunterberg, L., 2013: Oljeförekomster i kristallin berggrund, södra Norge – en jämförelse med djupt vittrad berg- grund i södra Sverige. Examensarbeten i geologi vid Lunds universitet, Nr. 344, 14 sid. 15 hp. Nyckelord: Petroleum, kristallin berggrund, djupvittring, saprolite. Crystalline basement is mostly hard composition in the pyrobitumen (Eakin 1989) and gas and solid, but in fractured and weathered zones the porosity and permeability can increase. Basement rocks as igneous, metamorphic and volcanic have been observed to contain petroleum through infiltration from adjacent sedimentary basins (Munz et al. 2002). Crystalline reservoirs are discussed in this thesis. The way oil occurs in crystalline basement is shown in Fig. 1. Oil producing source rock is buried with an increasing temperature and depth. Tectonic movements create fractures and uplift in the basement. This locally forces the oil producing source rocks to a lower level relative the basement, e.g. along the lower flanks of anticlinals. The producing hydrocarbon mi- grates upwards along the flank of the basement and accumulates in the new convex structure. A sealing cap of shale or clay will trap the hydrocarbons. A filled trap can result in seeps toward the surface or downward into lower depth and more permeable frac- ture zones (Hurricaneenergy 2013). In this case the possibility of finding oil in fractured basement highs increases (Salah & Alsharhan 1998). Fig. 1. The outermost part of the Baltoscandian continental margin is itself suspect , in the terrane sense. since the true palaeogeographical location s of rocks now represented in the Seve and serey-seuano Nappes, while inferred, are not known. The orogen -internal exotic terranes embrace the oceanic/eugeoclinal elements of the Caledonides, represented by the mag matosed imentary assemblages of the Koli Nappes, including ophiolite fragments and island arc products. • Western Karmøy, an Integral Part of the Precambrian Basement of South Norway
WESTERN KARMØY, AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PRECAMBRIAN BASEMENT OF SOUTH NORWAY TOR BIRKELAND Birkeland, T.: Western Karmøy, an integral part of the Precambrian basement of south Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 55, pp. 213-241. Oslo 1975. Geologically, the western side of Karmøy differs greatly from the eastern one, but has until recently been considered to be contemporaneous with the latter, i.e. of Caledonian age and origin. The rocks of western Karmøy often have a distinctly granitoid appearance, but both field geological studies and labora tory work indicate that most of them are in fact metamorphosed arenaceous rudites which have been subjected to strong regional metamorphism under PT conditions that correspond to the upper stability field of the amphibolite facies, whereas the Cambro-Ordovician rocks of the Haugesund-Bokn area to the east have been metamorphosed under the physical conditions of the green schist facies. From the general impression of lithology, structure, and meta morphic grade, the author advances the hypothesis that the rocks of western Karmøy should be related to a Precambrian event rather than to rock-forming processes that took place during the Caledonian orogeny. T. Birkeland, Liang 6, Auklend, 4000 Stavanger, Norway. Previous investigations The first detailed description of the rocks of western Karmøy was given by Reusch in his pioneer work from 1888. Discussing the mode of development of these rocks, he seems to have inclined to the opinion that the so-called 'quartz augen gneiss' and the other closely related rocks represent regionally metamorphosed clastic sediments. Additional information of the rocks con cerned is found in his paper from 1913.

1 1 Morphology and Pattern of Quaternary Sedimentation in the North Sea Basin 2 (52-62°N) 3 4 Ottesen, D.1, Batchelor, C.L.2, Dowdeswell, J.A.2, Løseth, H.3 5 6 1 Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), Postboks 6315 Sluppen, Trondheim, N-7491, 7 Norway; 2Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1ER, 8 UK; 3Statoil, Arkitekt Ebbels vei, 7053, Ranheim, Norway. 9 10 Abstract 11 The Quaternary North Sea Basin, which extends from northwest mainland Europe in the 12 south (52°N) to the Norwegian Sea in the north (62°N), contains a thick (up to 1 km) 13 sedimentary succession that records the changing nature of sediment supply from 14 surrounding land areas during the last c.2.6 Ma. We use an extensive 2D and 3D seismic 15 database to correlate major Quaternary seismo-stratigraphic surfaces and units across the 16 North Sea and reconstruct the broad-scale infill pattern of the entire Quaternary North Sea 17 Basin. The total volume of Quaternary sediments in the North Sea (350,000 km²) is c.140,000 18 km3, while the area inside the 500 m contour of the base-Quaternary surface has a volume of 19 109,000 km3. Two largely independent depocentres developed in the North Sea Basin during 20 the early Quaternary: the southern and central sub-basin was infilled by shelf fluvio-deltaic 21 and prodeltaic sediments delivered from the east and south-east, whilst the northern sub-basin 22 was infilled mainly by prograding glacigenic debris-flows deposited from an ice mass centred 23 on the Norwegian mainland.

Time trends of anthropogenic radionuclides at Utsira Gordon C. Christensen', Elisabeth Strålberg' and Elis Holm2 'Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), N-2027 Kjeller (Norway) 2Department of Radiation Physics, Lund University, S-221 85 Lund (Sweden) Introduction Institute for Energy Technology has annually collected the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus at several sampling locations along the Norwegian coast since 1980, mainly in August and September [1,2]. At the south-western location Utsira, monthly samples have been collected regularly since January 1986. Time series for 99Tc and 137Cs in Fucus samples from Utsira are presented in this study. The results will be discussed with regard to Sellafield discharges and outflow from the Baltic Sea. Materials and methods The Fucus vesiculosus samples were dried and homogenised before analysis. The pretreatment and the gamma spectrometric analyses have been performed at Kjeller and the analysis of 99Tc at Lund. The Fucus samples were dried at 105 'C, homogenised and analysed for gamma emitters using high purity germanium gamma spectrometry and computerised spectrum analysis. Technetium was extracted by TBP from sulphuric acid-hydrogen fluoride media. Backextraction was done from sodium hydroxide solution from which media technetium was electrodeposited onto stainless steel discs. As radiochemical yield determinant 99mTc was used. After decay of the yield determinant technetium was measured by an anticoincidence shielded GM counter [3]. Results and discussion Caesium-1 37 The transit time from Sellafield to the southern coast of Norway has been estimated to 3-4 years [4]. Knowledge of the annual discharge of 137Cs from Sellafield year i [5,6] allow us to calculate Fucus transfer factors (FTFs) from Sellafie]d to the southernmost locations based on concentrations in Fucus in year i+4.

  • Anbefaling Om Statlig Forskrift for Kommunene Haugesund, Karmøy, Tysvær, Vindafjord, Bokn, Sveio Og Utsira Fra 16.3.2021 Kl
