It was a delicate, painstaking business, not unlike that of an archaeologist, which sometimes revealed artistic skulduggery. “Occasionally,” says Gillian,“I’d discover that the signature on a painting was a fake.” But forgeries were rare, and most of the time she was renewing the colourful vibrancy of scenes exactly as famous artists of long ago intended them to be viewed. An example is that 1803 painting by Joseph Turner shown above: The festival of the opening of the vintage at Mâcon, France. Gillian, who lives in , called on Team Borden after reading about us in Grapevine. “My fusebox was ten years old, and due for a check-up,” she says, “so I asked Borden’s to take a look. It is located in the cellar, where there was a gigantic mess of electrical wires. Dave Borden was methodical in his approach, and told me things could be put right with an electrical upgrade, rather than a full rewire.” We traced and eliminated faults, rewired various sockets/light switches, and tidied up the cellar cabling, where the consumer unit (fusebox) was replaced with an up-to-date model that has extra capacity. “It was clear to me,” says Gillian, “that Borden’s electricians were very skilled, and had lots of experience. I thought they were absolutely excellent.” Did you know...? Cheers! To Our Pub Therapy

Lunchtime drinks are popular with residents at The Porterbrook in

Friendship Luncheon Club is now part of the varied schedule of activities available to residents of The Porterbrook care Ahome in Crosspool. They visit local pubs along with members of staff, enjoying tasty food and quaffing favourite drinks. Sheilagh Sweeney, manager of The Porterbrook, says: “Taking our residents to the pub might sound like a strange idea, but it’s an important part of maintaining their self-esteem. “People who move into care homes often say they miss the small things of everyday life... supermarket shopping, popping round to friends’ homes or enjoying a drink at the local pub. It is important not to overlook the positive effects that flow from run-of-the-mill weekly activities.” In the friendly pub atmosphere residents soon relax and begin to reminisce about years gone by as they savour familiar aromas of food and drink, and hear music and people chattering nearby. Says Sheilagh: “We make sure there is musical entertainment at each pub we visit, which adds to the occasion. Our residents really look forward to their Friendship Luncheon Club outings.”

We fitted this curvacious kitchen at a house in Millhouses t was in 1973 that Stan and Jennie Nuttall moved into their three-bedroomed semi at Millhouses, and in 1984 that they last revamped its kitchen. I “Our daughters,” says Stan, “often told us we needed a new kitchen, as the units were looking dated. We read in Grapevine about Sheffield Kitchen Interiors, and after we contacted them Paul Fish came to measure-up. We were impressed with his great ideas.” Sheffield Kitchen Interiors removed the old kitchen and wall cladding, then looked after plastering and electrical work. The Nuttalls’ kitchen is galley style - long and narrow - so tall units were fitted for extra wall storage. The oven, hob, and an integral fridge were moved to different positions to make everything easier to use. Shaker-style units were fitted, hand-painted in a ‘mussel’ shade, and wood-look laminate flooring was laid. The worktops/splashbacks are dark grey Fugen Quartz. An integral oven is next to the fridge, and there is an appliance the Nuttals have long wanted - a dishwasher. Says Jennie: “We are very happy with the kitchen. I’m especially pleased we now have a dishwasher. We never had room for one before, but the new design created extra space. Everyone who worked at our home was very good. You can rely on what Paul Fish says, because his fitters did exactly what he promised.”

Bathrooms

with Vision Visual Bathrooms’ huge showroom is soon to become even bigger when an extension opens. Customers can view one of the most varied displays of bathrooms in Sheffield, each within a unique setting I have worked in the plumbing and bathrooms business for 42 years, writes Eric Law, of Visual Bathrooms. When I first started designing bathrooms in 1977 there were not that many showrooms featuring them in Sheffield - now there are plenty, which is why I have strived to create displays that are different from the rest. They are complemented by my super team of designers and installers, who look after everything, from design to completion. The internet is not always best Back in the 1970s the idea of using a computer to buy things would have been laughable - and it is still not the best way of buying a bathroom. For example, will it be compatible with your existing plumbing? Can you send back units if they are not suitable? These difficulties we easily overcome, as well as competing with online prices. Any problems are quickly resolved by me or one of my team. After-service We don’t ‘fit-then-forget’. After every installation we check everything is working properly, and if there is a problem we make sure it is resolved. Longevity and recommendations Most of Visual Bathrooms’ work comes from recommendations or repeat business. We have done work for generations of families, and been called back when people move house. LATEST TECHNOLOGY When I first started designing bathrooms I used graph paper and a ruler. Today we employ the latest CAD systems (computer-aided-technology), which allows us to show customers exactly what their bathroom will look like before it is fitted.

But lies and innuendo resulted in what must be termed a show trial, during which the flimsiest of evidence was produced to discredit him because he was born in a country Britain was at war with. To understand the animosity many felt towards Sir Joseph, we must bear in mind that the backdrop to this affair was carnage on the Western Front. Every day our troops were being killed in their thousands, though no one seemed to care that one of Sir Joseph’s four sons was in the British Army, or that a daughter of his was married to an English officer recovering from wounds. Peace seemed a long way off, even in 1918 - last year of the war - when Germany launched a massive offensive, hoping to win victory before Kaiser Wilhelm II and King George V honoured Sir Joseph Jonas
