It was a delicate, painstaking business, not unlike that of an archaeologist, which sometimes revealed artistic skulduggery. “Occasionally,” says Gillian,“I’d discover that the signature on a painting was a fake.” But forgeries were rare, and most of the time she was renewing the colourful vibrancy of scenes exactly as famous artists of long ago intended them to be viewed. An example is that 1803 painting by Joseph Turner shown above: opening of the vintage at Mâcon, France.
