Shiva-Vishnu Temple OCT-NOV-DEC-2005 Vol.18 No.4 PLEASE NOTE THE SCHEDULES DIRECTIONS From Freeway 580 in Livermore: Monday Through Thursday: 9 am to 12 noon Exit North Vasco Road, left on Scenic Ave, and 6 pm to 8 pm Left on Arrowhead Avenue F r i d a y, Weekends & Holidays: 9 am to 8 pm NEWS FROM THE HINDU COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL CENTER, LIVERMORE VISIT OUR WEB SITE AT http://www.livermoretemple.org SHIVA-VISHNU TEMPLE TELEPHONE (925) 449-6255 FAX (925) 455-0404 OM NAMAH SHIVAYA OM NAMO NARAYA N AYA HCCC CHAIRPERSON’S COLUMN Dear Devotees: As you all might have realized, the hurricane Katrina has caused lots of devastation along the Gulf Coast States and people living especially in Louisiana and Mississippi have experienced the brunt of it. Your Hindu Community and Cultural Center Board of Directors have allocated funds for the relief of Katrina victims and the HCCC is working with the local Rotary for the distribution of the funds. A special Hundi is also placed in the temple to collect money for Katrina victims and we urge you to contribute towards this worthy cause. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and elected officials and your very generous monetary contributions towards the Tsunami Funds, HCCC could raise enough money to pay for: a new school, some houses built for the victims and a mobile clinic in the Tsunami destroyed areas in India. In the previous Paschima Vani, I wrote about youth involvement and in this issue I promised to address two issues: development of facilities for various activities and the Devotee-HCCC interaction. I mentioned about my vision regarding what new facilities I consider are needed in the future to serve the community well. We have a Master Plan Committee. The members of that committee and the Livermore City Planning Division are currently having discussions about different projects and once we have a final list of projects to be undertaken, we will post that information on the temple web site and in the Paschima Vani. In order to undertake new construction projects HCCC needs money and we are counting on your generosity to raise the needed funds. Devotees can make special contributions earmarked exclusively for the construction of new facilities. The elected HCCC officials, our priests and the administrative staff are cognizant about the phenomenal growth in the number of devotees visiting the temple every week. We all are constantly exploring ways to serve you well. As you might have noticed, the number of religious functions (special poojas) conducted at the temple have increased to satisfy the needs of our divergent devotee community. Our priests are to be congratulated for their vision and hard work. Thanks to the “anna dana” sponsors, HCCC is able to serve free food to the devotees on weekends and during special functions. With the help of the administrative staff and volunteer workers, HCCC is trying to provide the essential services efficiently to the devotees. However, at the time of major functions, the temple needs lots of volunteer help. Typical areas where help is needed includes : front office support, human services health clinic, food preparation and distribution, helping the priests, teaching Bala Jyothi classes, help with the cultural program arrangements, Hundi counting on the weekends, providing accounting assistance, if needed by the treasurer etc., to name a few. Please let the President and/or the EC Chair Persons know if you are desirous of becoming a volunteer helper. Please remember that this is “ our temple “ and we all have a stake in it. Even with all the above, in order for us to be successful in our endeavor to serve you well, we need your cooperation in following some basic rules while you are in the temple. Please pay attention to the notices posted in front of the sanctums and outside. Also please observe the Dos and Don’ts posted on the temple web site. Be considerate of your fellow devotees. We want all the devotees to have the same religious experiences and similar satisfaction of participation during their visit to the temple. Please remember that it is our collective efforts that will make this organization (temple) a great institution. HCCC is organizing “Shiva Keshava maha yagnam” in October 2005. This will be a five days event and the details about the function are posted on the temple web site. Please participate in the Yajnam by becoming a sponsor. “ Ohm namah shivaya and ohm namo venkatesaya “. Jagannadham Akella, Chairperson, Board of Directors, HCCC. • Valli: a Venerated Folk Deity
Vol. 2 No. 3 January 2015 ISSN: 2321 – 788X VALLI: A VENERATED FOLK DEITY Dr. B. Kathiresan Associate Professor of English, Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore – 632115 Abstract Existence of myths from time immemorial assures people’s belief and respect towards God. Attitude towards spirituality on the basis of the mystical experiences that myths provide is often viewed incredulously. On the other hand those that carry certain conviction do have its impact on people in positive sense. These differential perspectives build the need to analyse myths that hold metaphysical intentions to be envisioned pragmatically. Extending this logical exploration to the myth of Valli, the goddess and the wife of Lord Murugan discloses the facts and motives in the pretext of their marriage. Valli, as a tribal lady elevated to a position of celestial being is an interesting mystery to probe. Keywords: Subrahmanya, Velayudha, Muruga, Kumaresa, Karttikeya, Shanmukha Lord Subrahmanya, the symbolic representation of the power of Knowledge is the energy of Lord Siva and is indeed believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The purpose of his incarnation is to illumine the intelligence of human beings and liberate them from ignorance of various kinds which hides the truth from them. Valli and Deivayanai being His two consorts represent the Ichcha Sakti and the Kriya Sakti of the Lord respectively. He bestows on His devotees material and spiritual prosperity and success in all their undertakings even at the slightest devotion shown to Him. Guha, Muruga, Kumaresa, Karttikeya, Shanmukha (He who has six faces), Subrahmanya, Velayudha (He who wears the spear) are synonymous names.
