THE RICHMOND TEMPLE Celebrates Deva Snana Puja Holy Bath of Lord Jagannath Saturday, June 6th, 2020 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Devasnana Puja or Snana Yatra is exclusively a festi- val of Lord Jagannath and is said to be one of the oldest. Snana Puja is the day the deities are bathed by 108 pitchers of water. The deities bathe, dress up in the Gajanana or Ganesha Vesha and even their daily food offering or Bhogalagi is done in full public view on the Snanamandapa. There remains no virtual difference between the devotees and their Lord. This day deemed to be the birthday of the Lord Jagan- natha also accounts for the traditions followed before the Ratha Yatra. Setting in motion the final count- down to the famous Lord Jagannath ‘Ratha Jatra’, the auspicious Deva Snana Puja or holy bathing ceremony of Lord Jagannath will be held.

Valli Kalyanam celebrates the divine wedding of Lord Murugan (Karthikeya) with Valli, who was the daughter of a tribal chief and Devayani (Devasena) who was the daughter of Lord Indra. In the previous birth, Valli and Devayani were the daughters of Lord Vishnu and undertook severe penance to become the consorts of Lord Murugan. Valli represents Kriya Shakti, the power of action and Devayani represents Iccha Shakti, the power of will, while Lord Murugan represents Gyana Shakti, the power of wisdom.
