Mangroves Occurring on the Many Islands in the South Pacific Are Only a Small Component When Compared to the Worldwide Inventory of Mangroves
TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT FOR MANGROVE AND LITTORAL FOREST MANAGEMENT, PLANNING AND TRAINING FOR SMALL ISLANDS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC Jan. 25, 2004 by James Denny Ward USDA Forest Service i FOREWORD Mangroves occurring on the many islands in the South Pacific are only a small component when compared to the worldwide inventory of mangroves. Although the mangroves found on the smaller islands may not seem as important on the global scale, they are extremely important to the small individual countries. Some of their benefits include shoreline protection, biodiversity, fisheries and a source for traditional products like building material, fuelwood and various cultural uses. These benefits are even more important to small island countries with limited resources and contributed to the survival of the indigenous people in earlier times. Realizing the importance of the mangrove resource the Forest & Trees Support Programme of SPC and the Heads of Forestry in the Pacific in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service conducted several missions during the last 10 years to assist the smaller island countries with preserving, protecting and managing their mangroves . The USDA Forest Service’s Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry based in Hawaii has been providing assistance to the Federated States of Micronesia and other islands with close ties to the United States for several years. Research conducted by this group has contributed greatly to the information base needed to manage mangroves throughout the South Pacific. This report is not all-inclusive but it is hoped that it will contain sufficient information to assist small islands in developing a management strategy for their individual countries. -

CD-ROM of this document plus images obtained to date - 1 - - 2 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Fish River Water Supply Scheme [FRWS] is a medium size but important water supply with the headwaters in the Central Highlands of NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range and to the south of Oberon. It supplies water in an area from Oberon, north to Portland, Mount Piper Power Station and beyond, and east, across the Great Dividing Range, to Wallerawang town, Wallerawang Power Station, Lithgow and the Upper Blue Mountains. It is the source of water for many small to medium communities, including Rydal, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo, as well as many rural properties through which its pipelines pass. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1945 as a Trading Undertaking of the NSW State Government. The FRWS had its origins as a result of the chronic water supply problems of the towns of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Oberon from as early as 1937, which were exacerbated by the 1940-43 drought. -

Increasing loads of nitrogen from the surrounding catchment threaten lake water quality. A management proposal is presented that promotes a sustainable development pathway for the lake community thereby protecting the lake for all New Zealanders. A community change process to protect the environmental, economic, cultural and spiritual values of a lake is described Keywords: Community, economy, Lake Taupo, land use, management, nutrients, policy, water quality INTRODUCTION Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand (area 620 km2, mean depth 95m). It is highly valued for its crystal blue water and dramatic vistas. These features provide the basis of an international tourist mecca and a world-class trout fishery as well as an important local recreation area and preferred retirement location. The lake is also important spiritually and culturally to the local indigenous people, Ngati Tuwharetoa. Lake Taupo’s excellent water quality is derived from extremely low levels of plant nutrients and phytoplankton. Unlike many other lakes, nitrogen availability rather than phosphorus limits phytoplankton growth in Taupo. Increased nutrient flows, especially nitrogen, from intensifying rural land use and urban growth in the catchment promotes algal and phytoplankton growth and threatens water clarity and the excellent water quality of the lake. -

The most salient of which is climate change and its impact on multilateral political networks, the security and resilience of governments, sustainable development, and geopolitical competition. These challenges pose both opportunities and threats to each regionally-invested government, including the United States — a power present in the region since the Second World War. This report sets out to answer the following questions: what are the current state of international affairs, complexities, risks, and potential opportunities regarding climate security issues and geostrategic competition in Oceania? And, what policy recommendations and approaches should the US government explore to improve its regional standing and secure its national interests? The report serves as a primer to explain and analyze the region’s state of affairs, and to discuss possible ways forward for the US government. Given that we conducted research from August 2019 through May 2020, the global health crisis caused by the novel coronavirus added additional challenges like cancelling fieldwork travel. However, the pandemic has factored into some of the analysis in this report to offer a first look at what new opportunities and perils the United States will face in this space. -

Introduction: The Northern Territory Government is responding to an invitation from the Joint Standing Committee on Migration’s inquiry into migrant settlement outcomes. The Northern Territory Government agencies will continue to support migrants, including humanitarian entrants through health, education, housing and interpreting and translating services and programs. The Northern Territory Government acknowledges the important role all migrants play in our society and recognises the benefits of effective programs and services for enhanced settlement outcomes. The following information provides details on these programs that support the settlement of the Northern Territory’s migrant community. 1. Northern Territory Government support programs for Humanitarian Entrants Department of Health The Northern Territory Primary Health Network was funded by the Department of Health to undertake a review of the Refugee Health Program in the Northern Territory. The review informed strategic planning and development of the Refugee Health Program in the Northern Territory prior to the development of a tender for provision of these services. The primary objectives of the Program were to ensure: increased value for money; culturally safe and appropriate services; greater coordination across all refugee service providers; clinically sound services; improved health literacy for refugees; and flexibility around ebbs and flows -

COGGER, Australian Museum (Figs. 1-3) (Plates I and 2) Manuscript Received 13.10.59 SUMMARY A new scincid species (Egernia saxatilis) from the Warrumbungle Mountains, New South Wales, and a new subspecies (Egernia saxatilis intermedia) from Kanangra Walls, New South Wales, are described. Morphological variations in these forms, and in the closely allied Egernia strialata (Peters), are tabulated. Egernia saxatilis saxatilis appears to be confined to the Warrumbungle Mountains, while Egernia saxatilis intermedia is distributed throughout various parts of the eastern highlands.
