In this wildly popular exhibit, artists re-interpret recognized world famous masterpieces to make them their own. A photograph of the original master accompanies each entry. Artists redo another artist’s complete work for various reasons — sometimes to poke fun at the original, sometimes as a joke, sometimes for style. Whatever the reason, when an artist recreates another artist’s work, particularly a masterpiece, it is called REMASTERING. Capturing hidden details using a skillful mas- tery of lenses, f-stops, and tools of the pho- tographer’s trade, he then uses the latest “digital darkroom” to unlock an emotional re- sponse so the final product can be enjoyed with increased pleasure for many years, ra- ther than having just an initial impact. Recently, Scott has been printing his work in a large format on metallic surfaces where dyes are infused into a specially-coated aluminum surface, resulting in a “frameless” print that appears to float off the wall with outstanding image clarity and vibrancy. Visit Scott’s work at www.schieffophotography.com Sophia Sutherland Sophia Sutherland’s second two-artist Dolphin Gallery Show reveals a fascination of the human body equal to that of her ap- preciation for cats. A distinctive hallmark of Sophia’s work is the series of small monoliths she produces with slabs from which a figure’s head and arms are formed to reach out to connect with others. Her works often depict intertwining lovers, a mother and child, or a small group of individuals joined together. Sophia describes her work as “overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical,” moving between second, third and fourth dimensions where she explores with viewers the final stage of “creativity: the work in the world.” This show features her three-dimensional pieces, which are informed by her use of water colors and pastels to create interesting nudes and figures. Sophia is active in the Artist Collective in Elk and is displayed at the Elk Studio Gallery and at the Hanes Gallery in Boon- eville. Composed by Ale- ksandra Vrebalov with videography by Andrew Lyndon, the songs were performed by Kronos in the White Barn in May of 2015 to rave reviews. Many requested a recording of the songs and now, thanks to very generous local donors, that call has been answered. A CD/DVD set of the Kronos Quartet singing The Sea Ranch Songs will be released by Canta- loupe Music this fall. The entire coastal community can now celebrate this release at a screening of the DVD at Gualala Arts Center on September 30, 2016, at 7 p.m. in the Cole- man Hall. Come and experience these magnificent songs and evocative film again or for the first time. Composer Aleksandra Vreblov The Kronos Quartet has played at The Gualala Arts Center twice be- fore, once at Art in the Redwoods in 2009 and again for a concert in 2012. A portion of proceeds from DVD sales will benefit Gualala Arts Center. Composer Aleksandra Vrebalov and videographer Andrew Lyndon will be on hand for the screen- ing and for a discussion afterwards. In writing about “The Sea Ranch Songs,” composer Vrebalov and David Harrington, founder of the Kronos Quartet, said “We celebrate the nature, people and architecture of this magical place by creating a piece with original music, documented sounds, and visual samples of differ- ent aspects of life and creativity in this rare landscape where people and nature are inter- Videographer Andrew Lyndon twined in a healthy union. Since its formation in 1995, the Chorus has offered diverse and innovative music to the community through a gathering of singers who believe in a commonality of spirit and sharing. The début concert featured music by Gabriel Fauré and Louis Vierne. The Chorus has been involved in several premieres, including Bay Area composer Brad Osness’ Lamentations, Ohio composer Robert Witt’s Four Motets to the Blessed Virgin Mary (West Coast premiere), New York composer William Hawley’s The Snow That Never Drifts (San Francisco premiere), and San Francisco composer Kirke Mechem’s Christmas the Morn, Blessed Are They, and To Music (San Francisco premieres). Our 004-005 musical year has been very exciting. In Fall 004, we took a wonderful journey through French choral history from the 15th century to the 0th century, presenting Choral Music of France and featuring choral jewels by Guillaume Dufay, Josquin des Pres, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Gabriel Fauré, César Franck, Francis Poulenc, Camille Saint-Saëns, Hector Berlioz and Arthur Honegger. For our Spring 005 program, we explored the music of two Austrian master composers, presenting Joseph Haydn’s joyous Harmoniemesse, the last major composition of this graceful and ebullient composer, and Anton Bruckner’s rarely performed Mass No.

  • MANY DIFFERENT SAMPLES of REVIEWS December 1, 2006 Music
MANY DIFFERENT SAMPLES OF REVIEWS December 1, 2006 Music Review | Miró Quartet A Favored Foursome Steps Outside the List of Favorites By ALLAN KOZINN It often seems surprising that, as vast as the string quartet repertory is, most ensembles draw from a relatively circumscribed well of favorites and acknowledged masterworks. The young musicians of the Miró Quartet set the core canon aside on Wednesday evening, when they played a concert at Alice Tully Hall. The program, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as part of the quartet’s 2005 Cleveland Quartet Award, included less frequently traveled works by Shostakovich and Dvorak, and a score by Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, a 19th-century Spanish composer whose works are now finding their way into the repertory. The group opened its program with Arriaga’s String Quartet No. 3, a work that it is also playing tonight on an otherwise unrelated program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can’t have too much Arriaga: this Spanish composer died in 1826, just shy of his 20th birthday, but the pieces he left — the quartets and some symphonic works — have a true spark of originality. He was called the Spanish Mozart, but his spirit and style are more akin to Beethoven’s; the opening movement of this Third Quartet bears a passing resemblance — in its rhythms and the shape of its main theme — to Beethoven’s Quartet No. 1 (Op. 18, No. 1). Even more striking are the later movements, which point toward Schubert, Brahms and Dvorak in both their melodic and textural richness.
