The Center provides students and the community with an opportunity to learn diverse the Psychology, Director Peace and Conflict Studies theoretical approaches to conflict transformation, and the practical Center, Austin Community College District training to apply these the theories to nonviolent resolution of conflict at the interpersonal, local, national, and international contexts. 11:00am First Panel - “The Journey from Citizen to Refugee” The Center facilitates course development across the disciplines Moderator, Dr. Grant Potts, Associate Professor and (academic and workforce). Sanchez, PhD, Professor, The Center also organizes events for students and the community with the aim of expanding their awareness of and involvement in local and Anthropology, Austin Community College District global issues that affect their lives. Panelists: We are grateful for the enthusiastic participation of experts from various Kay Mailander academic institutions, local and state governments, and non-profit organizations who join us for these events. Their interactions with our Deek Moore students provide them with role models in the community, expand their Amira Suton career aspirations and options, and occasionally start a long-term working relationship. In _______________________________ this role, she has developed curricula, conducted workshops, served on advisory boards, and organized events at ACC and _______________________________ national and local organizations to expand the reach of peace and conflict education in community colleges. Khosropour _______________________________ incorporates peace and conflict topics in her courses, and _______________________________ provides support to faculty in multiple disciplines for doing the same in their own courses. _______________________________ An educational psychologist, Khosropour studies peace and _______________________________ conflict in cross-cultural contexts. She has conducted comparative research with Iranian and American populations on _______________________________ single-sex education of girls, and conceptualizations of and responses to bullying. _______________________________ Since becoming deeply engaged with Peace and Conflict Studies _______________________________ in 2007, she has earned certificates in Global Conflict Analysis, International Humanitarian Law, and most recently International _______________________________ Conflict Management from the Johns Hopkins Bologna Institute _______________________________ for Peace & Security. In 2012, the American Red Cross appointed Khosropour as an International Humanitarian Law Teaching _______________________________ Fellow. When not in her office, she is likely running on trails anywhere in the world with a silly grin on her face. _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ Amira Suton Panel Discussion “The Journey from Citizen to Refugee” Amira Suton is Community Liasion for the State Refugee Health Program; Texas Department of State Health Services. Ms. Suton was born in Bosnia 1966, and lived in Bosnia the entire Moderator: time including the 5 years of the war. She came to America as a refugee in September of 1996. Dr. Grant Potts Associate Professor and Chair, Philosophy, In her work with the State of Texas, she works closely with the Austin Community College District HHSC Refugee Resettlement Program to market programs to community groups, health care providers, and professional groups in order to coordinate, improve and/or to stimulate interest. Kay Mailander Evelyn Apoko Kay Mailander is chair of the Central Texas Coalition Against Human Evelyn Apoko is from northern Uganda. At 12 years old she was Trafficking, and manager for the Community Wellness Mental abducted at gunpoint by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Health and Survivors of Trafficking programs at the Refugee Services and forced to become a child soldier.
