Against all odds, they reminded me to smile and cheer up. v ABSTRACT Different forms of racial segregation have been practiced in different countries the world over. However, the nature of South Africa‟s apartheid system, as it was practiced from 1948 until the dawn of the democratic dispensation in 1994, has been a subject of debate in South Africa and even beyond. Apartheid was a policy that was designed by the then ruling Nationalist Party for purposes of dividing and stratifying South Africa along racial lines - whites, blacks, coloureds and Asians. It thus promoted racial segregation and/or unequal stratification of society. In South Africa‟s hierarchy of apartheid, blacks, who constituted the majority of the population, were ironically the most destitute and segregated. Some historians believe that South Africa‟s racial policy was designed against the backdrop of Jim Crow, a similar system of racial discrimination which was instituted in the American South late in the 1890s through the 20th century. Jim Crow and apartheid are, in this study, considered as sides of the same coin; hence for the sake of convenience, the word apartheid is used to subsume Jim Crow. Although South Africa‟s apartheid system was influenced by different ideologies, for example German missiology as applied by the Dutch Reformed Church, historian Hermann Giliomee (2003: 373) insists that „the segregationist practice of the American South was particularly influential.‟ Given the ideological relationship between apartheid and Jim Crow, the present study investigates the interplay of compatibility between apartheid/Jim Crow and crime and violence as reflected in selected works of Richard Wright (African American novelist) and Athol Fugard (South African playwright). The aim of the study is firstly, to examine the works in order to analyse them as responses to apartheid and by extension colonial domination and secondly to investigate crime and violence. The three criminological theories selected for this study are strain theory (by Robert Merton), subculture theory (Edwin Sutherland) and labelling theory (Howard Becker). While criminological theory provides an empirical dimension to the study, postcolonial theory situates the study within a specified space, which is the postcolonial context. The postcolonial is, however understood, not as a demarcated historical space, vi but as a continuum, from the dawn of colonization to the unforeseeable future. Three postcolonial theorists have been identified for the purposes of this study. These are: Frantz Fanon, Homi Bhabha and Bill Ashcroft. Fanon‟s psychoanalysis of the colonized, Homi Bhabha‟s Third Space and hybridity as well as Ashcroft‟s postcolonial transformation are key concepts in understanding the different ways in which the colonized deal with the consequences of colonization. It has been suggested particularly in Edward Said‟s Orientalism (1978) that the discourse of orientalism creates the Oriental, as if Orientals were a passive object of the colonial adventure. This study uses Bhabha‟s and Ashcroft‟s theory of colonial discourse to argue that the colonized are not only objects of the colonial enterprise but also active participants in the process of opening survival spaces for self-realization. The various criminal activities that the colonized engage in (as represented in the selected works of Richard Wright and Athol Fugard) are in this study viewed as ways of inscribing their subjectivity within an exclusive colonial system. vii CHAPTER ONE Crime, violence and apartheid: the postcolonial/criminological approach. Statement of the Problem The study critically interrogates the interplay of compatibility between crime, violence and apartheid in selected works of Richard Wright and Athol Fugard in the wake of ideologically-inclined readings that ascribe labels to the works of Richard Wright and Athol Fugard, thereby reducing the complexity of their works to the conceptual

A woman, Pumla (Nambitha Mpumlwana) gets out and rings the bell and speaks to someone asking him to open the gate. Tsotsi runs up, draws his gun and points it at her. He gets in the car and she tries to stop him from leaving. As Tsotsi shifts from reverse to drive he's stopped for a moment and Pumla manages to get the car door open and tries to tell him to stop but Tsotsi shoots her and drives off. Suddenly he hears a soft crying: it's a baby. He swerves and hits a sign, almost running off the road.

THE FISHING BOYS OF LAKE VOLTA It is estimated that 7,000-10,000 fishing boys work on the shores and in the waters of eastern Ghana’s Lake Volta. Born into poverty, many of these boys are given away or sold to relatives or strangers who promise to teach the boys the fishing trade and give them a better life. Removed from their families and homes, the fishing boys find themselves on a vast manmade lake that will become a virtual prison for the remainder of their childhood years. The fishing boys are denied medical care, the opportunity to attend school, and are forced to work long, 14 + hour days year-round. With the help of advocates such as Eric Peasah, Director of Right to be Free and consultant for the International Organization for Migration, some of these boys are set free. Eric negotiates with the boys’ traffickers for their freedom.

It shocks and makes angry, sad and sympathetic at the same time. Tsotsi, which means gangste r, is a nineteen-year-old boy living in one of the townships of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the leader of a gang and a really bad guy. One day, he steals a car, shoots the owner down and flees. On his escape, he recognizes a baby in the back and decides to take it with him to his home. The film shows his rising care for the baby, that rouses memories of his own childhood he repressed before. At first sight, Tsotsi is the stereotypical criminal and violent teenager, but during the story, he turns out to be a rather round character, i.e. he is not such a simple character as one initially assumes. He becomes interesting. Inner fight Throughout the film, one can observe the development of Tsotsi’s conscience. In the beginning, the boy is situated in a hopeless situation. He is uneducated, has no job and steals in order to survive. Throughout the story, he seems to go through a kind of inner fight. On the one hand, he sees the richer people of the suburbs, on the other hand, the people, whose situation is even worse than his own. With the latter the film shows some very strong personalities, which, perhaps, seem to be weak externally, but which, on closer inspection, prove to be rather strong and the boy recognizes that they try to make the best out of their situation.

    Third World Quarterly, Vol 23, No 6, pp 1159–1179, 2002 The history of the use of bacteriological and chemical agents during Zimbabwe’s liberation war of 1965–80 by Rhodesian forces IAN MARTINEZ ABSTRACT In 1979 the largest recorded outbreak of anthrax occurred in Rhodesia, present day Zimbabwe. The incident, widely known in Africa and in intelligence circles is not widely known in the USA or Europe. At the time Rhodesia was fighting a guerilla war against black nationalist insurgents. Rhodesia first accused the nationalist side of using anthrax as a weapon. In allegations that surfaced in 1998—and which persist to this day—external researchers and the current government of Zimbabwe insist that the outbreak in 1978–80 was anything but benign. They argue that the original outbreak was the result of a calculated move by the Rhodesian government with the duplicitous acknowledgment of apartheid South Africa. Furthermore, the government alleges that a current outbreak is the work of disgruntled white farmers in the country. The allegations over the 1979–80 outbreak are given credence by the acknow- ledgement by Ken Flower, Chief of Rhodesia’s Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), and by CIO Officer Henrik Ellert that the white minority regime of Ian Smith used biological and chemical weapons against the guerillas, against rural blacks to prevent their support of the guerillas and against cattle to reduce rural food stocks.
