The development of Sacrosanctum Concilium Part 2 - a presentation by Seán O’Seasnáin on becoming familiar with Vatican II and the Liturgy with a focus on Chapter 4 of What Happened at Vatican II by John W. O’Malley The Lines Are Drawn - The First Period (1962) or, How to grok Sacrosanctum Concilium (SC) while avoiding moonbats and wingnuts from the vantage point of a young Irish friar in formation at the time of Vatican II The four aggiornamento modernization principles identified by John W. O’Malley p140f 1) ressourcement 2) adaptation 3) episcopal collegiality and 4) active participation (Ch.4 of What Happened at Vatican II) are correctly described by O’Malley as fundamental and traditional principles. In a harsh and pedantic review of What Happened at Vatican II the late Richard John Neuhaus, on one hand gives O’Malley back-handed compliments for his balanced analysis, and in the next sentence rushes in to castigate him with misleading accusations of presenting the ‘discontinuity’ perspective of the council. Neuhaus writes dismissively: “What Happened at Vatican II is a 372-page brief for the party of novelty and discontinuity. Its author comes very close to saying explicitly what is frequently implied: that the innovationists practiced subterfuge, and they got away with it” [10]. I would have to credit Neuhaus with providing a reminder here of how appropriate the ‘moonbat’ and ‘wingnut’ designations are when it comes to critiques of Vatican II and the liturgy. The Role of Tradition
The Role of Tradition Most of our separated brethren believe that all that is needed for faith is conveyed in the Bible. This is the principle of sola scriptura (only scripture) while the Catholic teaching is "Scripture and Tradition." What does Tradition encompass? Paul teaches us that we are to hold to what is given us by Scripture and what is conveyed orally (1 Cor 11:23). This oral teaching is Tradition. The Catholic faith makes a distinction between Traditions (capital T) which are based on the teaching of apostolic times and thus can not be changed and those traditions (small t) which can be changed by the church. Examples of Traditions are: prayers for the dead, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the celebration of Sunday as the Lords' day, and the Blessed Trinity. Many of these Traditions are summed up in the early creeds such as the Apostles Creed. The (capital T) Traditions are also referred to by the Church as "Sacred Tradition." The other (small t) traditions are such practices as: priestly celibacy, specified days of fasting and/or abstinence, and kneeling and standing in Church. As time goes on, these traditions may be changed or revised as necessary for the Church to respond to God through the language, culture, problems and opportunities of our day. The Gospels tell us that Jesus was sometimes dragged into arguments between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The main difference between these two groups was that the Sadducees restricted their beliefs and rules to what was explicitly written in the Torah while the Pharisees included the wisdom of the ages (Tradition). -

The Catholic Faith Divine Revelation Knowing God Faith is a gift from God that allows us to believe in him and all that he has revealed. We can know God from creation. Saint Thomas Aquinas’ five proofs of knowing the existence of God by reason. First Mover: Anything moved is moved by another. There cannot be an infinite series of movers. So there must be a first mover. First Cause: Anything caused is caused by another. There cannot be an infinite series of causes. So there must be a first cause. Necessary Being: Not everything is contingent. So there is a necessary being upon which other beings depend for their existence. Greatest Being: Whatever is great to any degree gets its greatness from that which is the greatest. So there is a greatest being, which is the source of all greatness. Intelligent Designer: Whatever acts for an end must be directed by an intelligent being. So the world must have an intelligent designer. It is not contrary to the faith to accept the theory of evolution, so long as we understand that God is our Creator, man is the highest level of creation, and man’s soul is created only by God. Man – Made in God’s Image Man is composed of a body and a soul. Man’s soul is rational. The intellect is a power of the rational soul. Man is created in God’s image. All men are created equal in dignity. Man is called to relationship and stewardship. Revelation God has revealed himself out of love for man. -

Important Church Writings… Official documents of the Catholic Church have evolved and differentiated over time, but commonly come from four basic sources: 1) Papal documents, issued directly by the Pope under his own name; 2) Church Council documents, issued by ecumenical councils of the Church and now promulgated under the Pope's name, taking the same form as common types of papal documents; and 3) Bishops documents, issued either by individual bishops or by national conferences of bishops. The types of each are briefly explained below. Not all types of documents are necessarily represented currently in this Bibliography. The level of magisterial authority pertaining to each type of document - particularly those of the Pope - is no longer always self- evident. A Church document may (and almost always does) contain statements of different levels of authority commanding different levels of assent, or even observations which do not require assent as such, but still should command the respect of the faithful. The Second Vatican Council, speaking through Lumen Gentium (The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) identified as many as four different kinds of authority (n. 25). Those affirmations of the Second Vatican Council that recall truths of the faith naturally require the assent of theological faith, not because they were taught by this Council but because they have already been taught infallibly as such by the Church, either by a solemn judgment or by the ordinary and universal Magisterium. So also a full and definitive assent is required for the other doctrines set forth by the Second Vatican Council which have already been proposed by a previous definitive act of the Magisterium. -
Pius Ix and the Change in Papal Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century.
