Book of Souls | DC Database | Fandom To say that Iron Maiden 's The Book of Souls was ardently anticipated would be a vast understatement. Though it was mostly finished invocalist Bruce Dickinson 's cancer diagnosis and treatment delayed its release until he was medically cleared. Their first double album, it's 92 minutes long, and three of its 11 tracks are over ten minutes. Steve Harris contributed one solo composition, and co-wrote six tracks with various bandmates. Dickinson -- for the first time since Powerslave -- wrote two solo tunes, the album's bookends, and collaborated on two more. The music is cleanly divided between the two discs. The first is tight; it offers a bit of everything that makes Iron Maiden It is seemingly self-contained. Dickinson 's "If Eternity Should Fail" is an impressive showcase for his voice. Its dark intro and atmospherics are eventually transformed into one of the heaviest tunes Maiden 's recorded in The Book of Souls dig's age, but he climbs above the sonic mass. Dickinson 's fury is accompanied by a rockarolla riff, soaring metal guitar fills, and Nicko McBrain 's grooving drums. The title cut The Book of Souls theatrical, as acoustic guitar and a sparse synth are filled out with a knotty riff and solo breaks, emerging as a slower, heavier headbanger. By contrast, disc two is structured almost narratively; it slowly enlarges and expands to serve an unexpected conclusion. Opener "Death or Glory" is The Book of Souls crowd-catcher as Dickinson soars above thudding drums and guitar choruses redolent of Thin Lizzy. It's dull and predictable, a minor The Book of Souls that doesn't measure up to the set's ambition. It's a clamorous rocker, yet the lyrics and melody are simultaneously empathic and disconsolate. Dickinson 's minute "Empire of the Clouds" is about the R airship disaster of It's Maiden 's longest song, but a grand conclusion. He plays majestic classical piano throughout, as tasteful, biting guitars create a complementary melodic labyrinth amid swelling orchestral strings. They add texture while McBrain 's swinging drums add drama. It's a heavy metal suite, unlike anything in their catalog. Producer Kevin Shirley does a stellar job capturing an "in studio" sound that allows for spacious dynamics and warmth without artifical mass. Who would have thought that after decades Iron Maiden would have an album as fine The Book of Souls alone as long as The Book of Souls in them? Throughout its existence, heavy metal has been mired with controversies; critics slighted the music by shunning it off as being riddled with overblown adolescent theatrics, and conservative groups have accused the genre of being provocative due to its evil lyrical content. Inspite of all those adversities, heavy metal has held its stance as one of the most consistent forms of rock music. Metal music, through its efforts has reinstated the “ancient Indo-European spirit of vir”1 through a Romantic, Faustian form of music culture. This has staggered the general concept of mainstream music and has hence, since long, remained controversial. Heavy metal has never been popular with the mainstream masses, primarily due to the nature of the music. Amongst other things, lyrical content of the songs is one thing that is largely frowned upon and often considered to be one of the primary reasons why metal music has never struck a chord with the masses. But such allegations, while partly true, remain biased to a large extent.

Dies ist der Sound einer Band des 21. Jahrhunderts, die gerade ihr bislang bestes Album gemacht hat. Eine energiegeladene Ansammlung von zügellosem Rock’n’Roll, genau so wie er sein sollte: heiß, laut und verschwitzt. Tracer haben eine lange Reise hinter sich seit sie sich vor knapp zehn Jahren in Adelaide im Süden Australiens gründeten. Sie haben zwei Independent Mini-Alben aufgenommen (drei Songs auf „Into The Night“ in 2006 und das 7-Track „L.A.?“ in 2009), aber ihr eigentliches Debüt war „Spaces In Between“, das 2011 auf Mascot's Cool Green Recordings veröffentlicht wurde. In der Vergangenheit wurden Tracer oft verglichen mit Acts wie Soundgarden, Queens Of The Stone Age, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Kyuss etc. Mit „El Pistolero“ bauen sie sich eine stärkere eigene Identität auf, was aber nicht heißt, dass die Band die Vergleiche nicht zu schätzen wüsste.
