Specifically, it argues that it is possible to explain the aesthetic and its underlying dynamic relations with axiomatic structure (the octahedral axiom derived category) based on contemporary mathematics – namely, category theory – and through this argument suggests the possibility for discussion about the mathematical structure of the aesthetic. If there was a way to describe the structure of aesthetics with the language of mathematical structures and mathematical axioms – a language completely devoid of arbitrariness – then we would make possible a synthetical argument about the essential human activity of “the aesthetics”, and we would also gain a new method and viewpoint on the philosophy and meaning of the act of creating a work of art and artistic activities. -

Ask students to open their notebooks to a clean sheet of paper and draw lines to divide the sheet into thirds as shown below. Create a poster of the same graphic organizer for the room. This activity should take no more than 10 minutes; it is not a teaching opportunity but simply a data- collection activity. The “Structure” of Physics: A Case Study∗ (Journal of Philosophy 106 (2009): 57–88) Jill North We are used to talking about the “structure” posited by a given theory of physics. We say that relativity is a theory about spacetime structure. Special relativity posits one spacetime structure; different models of general relativity posit different spacetime structures. We also talk of the “existence” of these structures. Special relativity says that the world’s spacetime structure is Minkowskian: it posits that this spacetime structure exists. Understanding structure in this sense seems important for understand- ing what physics is telling us about the world. But it is not immediately obvious just what this structure is, or what we mean by the existence of one structure, rather than another. The idea of mathematical structure is relatively straightforward. There is geometric structure, topological structure, algebraic structure, and so forth. Mathematical structure tells us how abstract mathematical objects t together to form different types of mathematical spaces. Insofar as we understand mathematical objects, we can understand mathematical structure. Of course, what to say about the nature of mathematical objects is not easy. Appendix A Group Theory This appendix is a survey of only those topics in group theory that are needed to understand the composition of symmetry transformations and its consequences for fundamental physics. It is intended to be self-contained and covers those topics that are needed to follow the main text. Although in the end this appendix became quite long, a thorough understanding of group theory is possible only by consulting the appropriate literature in addition to this appendix. In order that this book not become too lengthy, proofs of theorems were largely omitted; again I refer to other monographs. From its very title, the book by H. Georgi [211] is the most appropriate if particle physics is the primary focus of interest. The book by G. Costa and G. Fogli [102] is written in the same spirit. Both books also cover the necessary group theory for grand unification ideas. A very comprehensive but also rather dense treatment is given by [428]. Still a classic is [254]; it contains more about the treatment of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. As this book contains too much interesting material for a simple master thesis, we have narrowed our attention to chapters 1, 4 and 5. This thesis is divided into three main parts: Theory, Application and Appendix. Within the Theory chapter, we (as the name might suggest) develop the necessary theory to assist with finding irreducible representations of finite monoids. Finite monoids and their structure gives elementary definitions as regards to finite monoids, and expands on the basic theory of their structure. This part corresponds to chapter 1 in [3]. The theory of an idempotent develops just enough theory regarding idempotents to enable us to state a key result, from which the principal result later follows almost immediately. -
Algebras of Boolean Inverse Monoids – Traces and Invariant Means
C*-algebras of Boolean inverse monoids { traces and invariant means Charles Starling∗ Abstract ∗ To a Boolean inverse monoid S we associate a universal C*-algebra CB(S) and show that it is equal to Exel's tight C*-algebra of S. We then show that any invariant mean on S (in the sense of Kudryavtseva, Lawson, Lenz and Resende) gives rise to a ∗ trace on CB(S), and vice-versa, under a condition on S equivalent to the underlying ∗ groupoid being Hausdorff. Under certain mild conditions, the space of traces of CB(S) is shown to be isomorphic to the space of invariant means of S. We then use many known results about traces of C*-algebras to draw conclusions about invariant means on Boolean inverse monoids; in particular we quote a result of Blackadar to show that any metrizable Choquet simplex arises as the space of invariant means for some AF inverse monoid S. 1 Introduction This article is the continuation of our study of the relationship between inverse semigroups and C*-algebras. On the Representation of Boolean Magmas and Boolean Semilattices
Chapter 1 On the representation of Boolean magmas and Boolean semilattices P. Jipsen, M. E. Kurd-Misto and J. Wimberley Abstract A magma is an algebra with a binary operation ·, and a Boolean magma is a Boolean algebra with an additional binary operation · that distributes over all finite Boolean joins. We prove that all square-increasing (x ≤ x2) Boolean magmas are embedded in complex algebras of idempotent (x = x2) magmas. This solves a problem in a recent paper [3] by C. Bergman. Similar results are shown to hold for commutative Boolean magmas with an identity element and a unary inverse operation, or with any combination of these properties. A Boolean semilattice is a Boolean magma where · is associative, com- mutative, and square-increasing. Let SL be the class of semilattices and let S(SL+) be all subalgebras of complex algebras of semilattices. All members of S(SL+) are Boolean semilattices and we investigate the question of which Boolean semilattices are representable, i.e., members of S(SL+). There are 79 eight-element integral Boolean semilattices that satisfy a list of currently known axioms of S(SL+). We show that 72 of them are indeed members of S(SL+), leaving the remaining 7 as open problems. 1.1 Introduction The study of complex algebras of relational structures is a central part of algebraic logic and has a long history. In the classical setting, complex al- gebras connect Kripke semantics for polymodal logics to Boolean algebras with normal operators. Several varieties of Boolean algebras with operators are generated by the complex algebras of a standard class of relational struc- tures. -

1. Introduction In this chapter, I introduce some of the fundamental objects of algbera: binary opera- tions, magmas, monoids, groups, rings, fields and their homomorphisms. 2. Binary Operations Definition 2.1. Let M be a set. A binary operation on M is a function · : M × M ! M often written (x; y) 7! x · y. A pair (M; ·) consisting of a set M and a binary operation · on M is called a magma. Example 2.2. Let M = Z and let + : Z × Z ! Z be the function (x; y) 7! x + y. Then, + is a binary operation and, consequently, (Z; +) is a magma. Example 2.3. Let n be an integer and set Z≥n := fx 2 Z j x ≥ ng. Now suppose n ≥ 0. Then, for x; y 2 Z≥n, x + y 2 Z≥n. Ring (mathematics) 1 Ring (mathematics) In mathematics, a ring is an algebraic structure consisting of a set together with two binary operations usually called addition and multiplication, where the set is an abelian group under addition (called the additive group of the ring) and a monoid under multiplication such that multiplication distributes over addition.a[›] In other words the ring axioms require that addition is commutative, addition and multiplication are associative, multiplication distributes over addition, each element in the set has an additive inverse, and there exists an additive identity. One of the most common examples of a ring is the set of integers endowed with its natural operations of addition and multiplication. Certain variations of the definition of a ring are sometimes employed, and these are outlined later in the article. Polynomials, represented here by curves, form a ring under addition The branch of mathematics that studies rings is known and multiplication. as ring theory. Ring theorists study properties common to both familiar mathematical structures such as integers and polynomials, and to the many less well-known mathematical structures that also satisfy the axioms of ring theory. The ubiquity of rings makes them a central organizing principle of contemporary mathematics.[1] Ring theory may be used to understand fundamental physical laws, such as those underlying special relativity and symmetry phenomena in molecular chemistry. The concept of a ring first arose from attempts to prove Fermat's last theorem, starting with Richard Dedekind in the 1880s. After contributions from other fields, mainly number theory, the ring notion was generalized and firmly established during the 1920s by Emmy Noether and Wolfgang Krull.[2] Modern ring theory—a very active mathematical discipline—studies rings in their own right. -

Chapter 5 First-Order Logic 5.1 INTRODUCTION In propositional logic, it is not possible to express assertions about elements of a structure. The weak expressive power of propositional logic accounts for its relative mathematical simplicity, but it is a very severe limitation, and it is desirable to have more expressive logics. First-order logic is a considerably richer logic than propositional logic, but yet enjoys many nice mathemati- cal properties. In particular, there are finitary proof systems complete with respect to the semantics. In first-order logic, assertions about elements of structures can be ex- pressed. Technically, this is achieved by allowing the propositional symbols to have arguments ranging over elements of structures. For convenience, we also allow symbols denoting functions and constants. Our study of first-order logic will parallel the study of propositional logic conducted in Chapter 3. First, the syntax of first-order logic will be defined. The syntax is given by an inductive definition. Next, the semantics of first- order logic will be given. For this, it will be necessary to define the notion of a structure, which is essentially the concept of an algebra defined in Section 2.4, and the notion of satisfaction. Given a structure M and a formula A, for any assignment s of values in M to the variables (in A), we shall define the satisfaction relation |=, so that M |= A[s] 146 5.2 FIRST-ORDER LANGUAGES 147 expresses the fact that the assignment s satisfies the formula A in M. The satisfaction relation |= is defined recursively on the set of formulae. -

Part 3: First-Order Logic with Equality Equality is the most important relation in mathematics and functional programming. In principle, problems in first-order logic with equality can be handled by, e.g., resolution theorem provers. Equality is theoretically difficult: First-order functional programming is Turing-complete. But: resolution theorem provers cannot even solve problems that are intuitively easy. Consequence: to handle equality efficiently, knowledge must be integrated into the theorem prover. 1 3.1 Handling Equality Naively Proposition 3.1: Let F be a closed first-order formula with equality. Then F is satisfiable if and only if Eq(Σ) [ fF~g is satisfiable. 2 Handling Equality Naively By giving the equality axioms explicitly, first-order problems with equality can in principle be solved by a standard resolution or tableaux prover. But this is unfortunately not efficient (mainly due to the transitivity and congruence axioms). 3 Roadmap How to proceed: • Arbitrary binary relations. • Equations (unit clauses with equality): Term rewrite systems. Expressing semantic consequence syntactically. Entailment for equations. • Equational clauses: Entailment for clauses with equality.
