    LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to the life and many accomplish- ments of Ellie Greenwich, one of the greatest songwriters of all time WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor and pay tribute to the memory of those individuals whose creative talents contributed to the entertainment and cultural enrichment of the citizens of the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body, repres- enting the people of the State of New York, to pay tribute to the life and many accomplishments of Ellie Greenwich, one of the greatest song- writers of all time, who died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the age of 68; and WHEREAS, Born on October 23, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Ellie Green- wich was instrumental in shaping and popularizing the "girl group" sound of the early 1960s that included such acts as the Ronettes, the Shan- gri-Las and the Crystals, becoming, in the process, one of the most respected pop songwriters of the era; and WHEREAS, She met budding songwriter Jeff Barry and, following a release as Ellie Gee And The Jets, the couple formed the Raindrops in 1963; the group enjoyed a US Top 20 hit with "The Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget"; and WHEREAS, Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry enjoyed a sustained period of success with a series of notable compositions, including "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (the Exciters/Manfred Mann), "I Wanna Love Him So Bad" (the Jelly Beans) and "Hanky Panky" (Tommy James And The Shondells); and

But the evidence of his greatest hits insists that he was heavily dependent on a variety of assistance. Which makes sense: Record making is fundamentally collaborative. Spector associates like engineer Larry Levine, arranger Jack Nitzsche, and husband-wife songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were simply indispensable to his teen-art concoctions. Besides them, every Spector track featured a dozen or more musicians. The constant standouts were' drummer Hal Blaine, one of the most inventive and prolific in rock history, and saxophonist Steve Douglas. Finally, there were vast differences among Spector's complement of singers. An important part of Spector's genius stemmed from his ability to recruit, organize, and provide leadership within such a musical community. Darlene Love (who also recorded for Spector with the Crystals and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans) ranks just beneath Aretha Franklin among female rock singers, and "Christmas" is her greatest record, though it was never a hit. (The track probably achieved its greatest notice in the mid-eighties, when it was used over the opening credits of Joe Dante's film, Gremlins.) Spector's Wall of Sound, with its continuously thundering horns and strings, never seemed more massive than it does here.

    “Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Ronettes Original label Phil Spector Instantly infectious and memorable, “Be My Baby” has been described as the “Record of the Century” and the “greatest pop record ever made.” It was recorded by the Ronettes in 1963. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and was produced by Phil Spector. It was named to the National Recording Registry in 2006. The Ronettes were a group of girls from Spanish Harlem, sisters Veronica (“Ronnie”) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Before becoming a trio, the young women were a group of five joined by two other cousins, Elaine and Diane. (Sometimes they were also joined by their male cousin, Ira.) They sang together and perfected their harmonies at their grandmother’s house before branching out to play local dances and talent contests. Along with refining their line-up and sound, the girls also defined their look. In his biography of Phil Spector, author Mick Brown says of the group: The standard demeanor of girl groups of the day was one of demure innocence…But the Ronettes looked as if it was a Saturday night and they were cruising for trouble—figure- hugging dresses, hair piled into improbable beehives and lashings of mascara, which transformed the youthful high school girls into vamps. Today, the Ronettes are nearly as remembered for their look (which would later be largely carbon-copied by Amy Winehouse) as for their sound. After first being signed by and recording for the Colpix label (under the name Ronnie and the Relatives), the Ronettes came to the attention of Phil Spector who immediately took a liking to the group and especially to its de facto leader Ronnie.

    ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week Seven: Rock in the Early 1960s: Surf and Girl Groups Recommended Listening: Burt Bacharach, The Look of Love: The Burt Bacharach Collection (Rhino, 1998). This might seem like a strange inclusion, as most of the 75 tracks on this three-CD box were done by artists other than Burt Bacharach; Bacharach is sometimes thought of more as a pop or easy listening figure than a rock one; his success stretched throughout the 1960s, way past the British Invasion; and as he usually wrote with lyricists, especially Hal David, rather than working alone. Still, the Bacharach-David songwriting team was one of the great Brill Building collaborations, and vital to pop-rock's evolution into new melodic and lyrical directions. This box has hits and rarities by Dionne Warwick (the most frequent beneficiary of Bacharach-David's compositions and production), Gene Pitney, the Shirelles, the Drifters, Chuck Jackson, and many others. The Beach Boys, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2 (Capitol, 1999). Although these miss a few of their more notable songs (including their first single, "Surfin'"), these two twenty-song CDs contain virtually all of their 1960s hits and most famous non-hits. They span both their surf/hot rod-oriented pre-1965 material and their more mature sound of the last half of the 1960s. Dick Dale, King of the Surf Guitar: The Best of Dick Dale (Rhino, 1989). While he didn't have any national hits, Dick Dale was the most innovative and exciting instrumental surf music guitarist. This has his best early-'60s recordings, including "Misirlou," made famous by its use in Pulp Fiction, and covered by the Beach Boys on their second album, on which they also covered Dale's "Let's Go Trippin'." The Four Seasons, The Very Best of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons (Rhino, 2003).
