To first time visitors to Kuala Lumpur – “Selamat Datang” – and to the rest, welcome back to a familiar and reliable venue – the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. On behalf of the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (MSGH), I am proud to say that our Annual Scientific Congress continues to deliver some of the highest standards of education in the South East Asian region, with GUT 2014 this year being no exception. For the first time this year, GUT 2014 is being held in conjunction with a one-day European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) Educational Workshop, the first of such an event to be held in the South East Asian region. The scientific programme committee, led by Dato’ Dr Tan Huck Joo, together with Prof Dato’ Dr Goh Khean Lee and Assoc Prof Dr Raja Affendi Raja Ali, have done a sterling job in putting together a varied programme, covering a broad spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology. We, in MSGH, have also worked hard to bring you leading experts from both Asia and the rest of the world, to update you with the latest developments in the field. GUT 2014 would not be possible without the assistance from our partners in the biomedical industry, and I would like to thank all of them, on behalf of MSGH, for their continued support. Wishing you a fruitful and enjoyable time over the next three days in GUT 2014 – the ONLY major Annual Scientific Congress in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Malaysia. Prof Dr Sanjiv Mahadeva pg 3 14th MSGH Distinguished Orator – Professor Dr Patrick Kamath Citation by Professor Dr Sanjiv Mahadeva Patrick S Kamath is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He graduated in 1976 from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore University in Karnataka, India and subsequently, underwent postgraduate training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in Chandigarh, India, where the foundation for his academic interest in the field of Gastroenterology were laid. Even in the early years of his career, Professor Kamath had demonstrated academic excellence by obtaining awards such as the Jane and Camillo Patrao Prize in Internal Medicine at St John’s Medical College and the Kataria Gold Medal (an award for the most outstanding postgraduate student) at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. It is no surprise then that he quickly rose to the position of Associate Professor and then Professor and Chief at the Department of Gastroenterology, St John’s Medical College, Bangalore University, in the late 1980’s. In 1991, Professor Kamath moved to the US and took up the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. His passion for teaching became evident very soon after, when he started winning “Teacher of the Year in Internal Medicine” awards at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, from 1993 onwards. In 1995, he was inducted into the “Hall of Fame for Teacher of the Year in Internal Medicine”, a position that he held steadily until 2002. In 2001, he was appointed as Professor of Medicine. For his leadership in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, in the education of future physicians and his exemplary care of patients, Professor Kamath was awarded the Henry J Plummer Distinguished Physician award for the Department of Internal Medicine, in 2003. This was soon followed by the Distinguished Educator Mayo Foundation award in 2005. Professor Kamath’s academic record has not been out-shone by his recognition for teaching. Although his initial research interest was in Gastroenterology, his focus had turned towards Hepatology in the later years. His research has appeared in top-ranking journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and he has even served on the Editorial Board as Associate Editor for Hepatology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. With more than 180 publications to his name, he has published widely in various fields, but particularly in the study of clinical outcomes related to cirrhosis and portal hypertension, vascular diseases of the liver, and polycystic liver disease. However, he is mostly known for his work in the development of the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. Although initially developed to predict outcomes in cirrhotic patients undergoing the TIPS procedure, it has been shown to be a valuable tool in predicting outcome for liver transplantation. A true example of translational research, the MELD score is now being used to direct the process of organ allocation for liver transplantation in the United States. So famous is the MELD score, that even Wikipedia has a write-up on the tool and its developer! With this achievement, and even more, it is not surprising that Professor Kamath was appointed to the Master’s Faculty Privileges in Clinical and Translational Science at the Mayo Graduate School in 2007. Professor Kamath has been a much sought-after speaker at numerous International Meetings around the world. He has been a “State-of-the-art” lecturer at DDW and a regular feature at the “Meet-the- Professor” sessions in the AASLD annual meetings. This essay presents key ethnographic data gathered from fieldwork conducted at selected churches in peninsular Malaysia as part of a research project that aimed to investigate transcultural adaptation in the intersections between Roman Catholic culture and ethnic Chinese and Tamil cultural elements. The discussion presents details of data gathered from churches that were part of the sample and especially reveal how ceremonial practices and material culture in many of these Malaysian Catholic churches revealed a high level of adaptation of ethnic identity and that these in turn are indicative of dialogue and mutual exchange between the repertoire of ethnic cultural customs and Roman Catholic religious practices. WILLIAMS [23/12/16] IS ROMAN CATHOLICISM TRUE CHRISTIANITY? – PART 12 THE ECUMENICAL AGENDA Introduction At last, we arrive at the final teaching part in our series looking at the Roman Catholic Church. The fundamental question running throughout this teaching series, the very title of this series has been ‘Is Roman Catholicism True Christianity?’ We began this teaching series by asking a question; ‘are the differences that separate Protestants, Catholics just minor matters of insignificance?’ In the first part of this teaching series we pointed out that if one was to do a Google search to identify the world’s largest religion, one would find that at the top of the list would be Christianity, representing some 2.2 billion people (more than 30% of the world’s population!!). The natural question that arises when being met by such figures is; what type of Christians!! When one looks at the breakdown of these figures, one finds that according to the figures from Pew Research, approximately, 50% of the 2.2 billion Christians are in fact Roman Catholic, with just fewer than 37% comprising of Protestants. Sadly, for many today, the only difference separating these two main Christian groups is one of history and tradition. Indeed, a call goes forth in our day in ever increasing sound, for these Christian groups to unite, after all they will say, don’t we all agree on the fundamentals of the faith!! Sadly, many within Evangelical circles, influential leaders and ministers are regurgitating the same erroneous sentiments!! For those familiar with Church history, for more than a thousand years, Roman Catholicism dominated Western Christianity with its popery and tradition.

To achieve this, a new work was started with the intention of reaching non-Christians, bringing them into community and discipleship, developing them as leaders and empowering and releasing them to form new missional communities. Special attention was made on spiritual formation, community life together and a transformative leadership process of developing leaders who replicate themselves. The context of Singapore is one in which Christianity has enjoyed great success. Singapore churches generally embrace a missiological theology but this outlook is being eroded as churches grow and are becoming institutionalized.
