  • Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)”: a Window Into Bob Dylan’S Existential and Religious World
chapter 1 “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)”: A Window into Bob Dylan’s Existential and Religious World Reidar Aasgaard Professor, idéhistorie, IFIKK, Universitetet i Oslo Professor of History of Ideas, IFIKK, University of Oslo Abstract: “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)” is a central song on Street-Legal, the album Bob Dylan released in 1978, a short time before his Christian conversion experience and the so-called Christian album trilogy of 1979–1981. Within the set- ting of a journey through a half-real, half-mythical landscape, the song describes an encounter between an I-figure, the singer, and his travel companion, a mysterious, silent “señor”, with the singer going through a process of growing frustration lead- ing to a state of existential despair. The article gives a close, narrative reading of the lyrics and analyzes the song within the contexts of the album, of the development of Dylan’s religious language, of his performances of the song from 1978 to 2011, and of his own comments on it. The main conclusion is that “Señor” can be read in different ways, but that religion, and Christianity in particular, plays an important and integral part in the various readings. The song reflects Dylan’s artistic and per- sonal situation at the time, also by foreshadowing his conversion experience, but at the same time belongs within a long trajectory of Dylan songs from the 1960s until today which deal with fundamental human themes related to history, society, social relations, religion, and life in general. Keywords: Bob Dylan, Christianity, Bible, literary analysis, contextual analysis Samandrag: «Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)» er ein sentral song på Street-Legal, albumet Bob Dylan gav ut i 1978, kort tid før sitt kristne gjennombrot og den såkalla kristne albumtrilogien frå 1979–81.

  • “Sólo Soy Un Guitarrista”: Bob Dylan in the Spanish-Speaking World–– Influences, Parallels, Reception, and Translation
Oral Tradition, 22/1 (2007): 112-133 “Sólo Soy Un Guitarrista”: Bob Dylan in the Spanish-Speaking World–– Influences, Parallels, Reception, and Translation Christopher Rollason “Sólo soy un guitarrista” - Bob Dylan, Tarantula (1966) “La guitarra. como la tarántula, teje una gran estrella” - Federico García Lorca, “Las seis cuerdas,” (1931) Spanish Manners: An Introduction This paper aims to examine the relationship between Bob Dylan’s work and the cultures, literatures, and musics of the Spanish-speaking world. The relationship is bidirectional, taking in Spanish and Latin American influences and themes in Dylan’s production, as well as the influence and reception of that work in the Hispanophone universe. I further consider not only direct influences but also literary and musical parallels, and also briefly examine the translation of Dylan into Spanish. What I am offering is a case- study in intercultural relations, not an excursion into theory, and I shall not be explicitly entering into issues of ethnoliterature, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, or translation studies. I do, however, stress by way of introduction that I believe Dylan’s work is a particularly interesting case of a hybrid cultural object, the result of a fusion, not so much between a bipolarised “high” and “low” culture as between three different cultures–– intellectual culture, mass culture, and folk or traditional culture. Much in Spanish and Latin American cultures, both literary and musical, is similarly– –and fecundly––hybrid in its make-up, building bridges between

  • Bob Dylan: 'Standing in the Doorway' an Analysis by Kees De Graaf
Bob Dylan: ‘Standing in the doorway’ An analysis by Kees de Graaf I’m walking through the summer nights The jukebox playing low Yesterday everything was going too fast Today it’s moving too slow I got no place left to turn I got nothing left to burn We find this song on the album ‘Time out of Mind’’. One of the themes of the album ‘Time out of mind’ is permanent movement. The poet is always restlessly under way to some sort of uncertain destination, hoping maybe to find peace at last. Maybe he will succeed. Het started to ‘walk through streets that are dead’ and finally ends up - though by one step at a time- in the Highlands where his heart is. The only place left to go. But here he walks through the hot summer night, the heat rising in his eyes. He feels terribly bad, his mood is in a minor key, the jukebox playing low, the drum banging slowly, the fife playing lowly, but no song in his heart this time. Once when he experienced the sunny side of love, time was going too fast, but now with all those tears time is moving too slow, nobody around to wipe the tears from his eyes. Time drags when there is agony. She is gone and he is stuck, no place left to turn, all bridges crossed burnt. Don’t know if I saw you, I would kiss you or kill you, It probably would not matter to you anyhow, You left me standing in the doorway crying, I got nothing to go back to now.

  • Bob Dylan: “THINGS HAVE CHANGED”- an ANALYSIS by KEES DE GRAAF This Song Firmly Stands in the Dylanesque Tradition of Song W
Bob Dylan: “THINGS HAVE CHANGED”- AN ANALYSIS BY KEES DE GRAAF This song firmly stands in the Dylanesque tradition of song writing. Some of the features of his song writing have been all along: 1. The world may come to an end at any moment now. This notion was fuelled by the teachings in the schools of the Vineyard Christian fellowship in the late seventies. All attention is focused on what is to happen on the latter day, when the thousand year rule of Christ in Jerusalem will commence immediately after His return to earth. 2. Because of this focus on the nearby thousand year rule of Christ the present world is abandoned and given up. All Christian action in this world is paralyzed by this notion. The world has gone wrong, man – and also Dylan- is a stranger in this world. He is out of range, it is no use trying, you should get out of it as soon as you can. The light in this place is bad, man walks through a lonesome valley in a strange land. In a certain way this line of thinking is Biblical. ( Cf. Hebr 11:13) Christians should indeed be strangers in this world in so far as they stay away from sin and that their hope should be fixed upon the coming kingdom of God. But there is also something very unbiblical in this way of thinking. We should not give up this world.
