iANALELE ŞTIIN łIFICE ALE UNIVERSIT Ăł II „ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA” DIN IA ŞI Tomul LVI Ştiin Ńe Economice 2009 ON THE MEDIEVAL URBAN ECONOMY IN WALLACHIA Lauren Ńiu R ĂDVAN * Abstract The present study focuses on the background of the medieval urban economy in Wallachia. Townspeople earned most of their income through trade. Acting as middlemen in the trade between the Levant and Central Europe, the merchants in Br ăila, Târgovi şte, Câmpulung, Bucure şti or Târg şor became involved in trading goods that were local or had been brought from beyond the Carpathians or the Black Sea. Raw materials were the goods of choice, and Wallachia had vast amounts of them: salt, cereals, livestock or animal products, skins, wax, honey; mostly imported were expensive cloth or finer goods, much sought after by the local rulers and boyars. An analysis of the documents indicates that crafts were only secondary, witness the many raw goods imported: fine cloth (brought specifically from Flanders), weapons, tools. Products gained by practicing various crafts were sold, covering the food and clothing demand for townspeople and the rural population. As was the case with Moldavia, Wallachia stood out by its vintage wine, most of it coming from vineyards neighbouring towns. The study also deals with the ethnicity of the merchants present on the Wallachia market. Tradesmen from local towns were joined by numerous Transylvanians (Bra şov, Sibiu), but also Balkans (Ragussa) or Poles (Lviv). The Transylvanian ones enjoyed some privileges, such as tax exemptions or reduced customs duties. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES The Faculty of Humanities was founded in 1993 due to the restoration with the provision of law legal decision numbered 496. It is the first faculty of the country with the name of The Faculty of Humanities after 1982. The Faculty started its education with the departments of History, Sociology, Art History and Classical Archaeology. In the first two years it provided education to extern and intern students. In the academic year of 1998-1999, the Department of Art History and Archaeology were divided into two separate departments as Department of Art History and Department of Archaeology. Then, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature was founded in the academic year of 1999-2000 , the Department of Philosophy was founded in the academic year of 2007-2008 and the Department of Russian Language and Literature was founded in the academic year of 2010- 2011. English prep school is optional for all our departments. Our faculty had been established on 5962 m2 area and serving in a building which is supplied with new and technological equipments in Yunusemre Campus. In our departments many research enhancement projects and Archaeology and Art History excavations that students take place are carried on which are supported by TÜBİTAK, University Searching Fund and Ministry of Culture. Velvet and Patronage: The Origin and Historical Background of Ottoman and Italian Velvets Dr. Sumiyo Okumura Velvets are one of the most luxurious textile materials and were frequently used in furnishings and costumes in the Middle East, Europe and Asia in the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. Owing to many valuable studies on Ottoman and Italian velvets as well as Chinese and Byzantine velvets, we have learned the techniques and designs of velvet weaves, and how they were consumed. However, it is not well-known where and when velvets were started to be woven. The study will shed light on this question and focus on the origin, the historical background and development of velvet weaving, examining historical sources together with material evidence. -

Language Use in the Ottoman Empire and Its Problems

Dockrat Johannesburg 2006/7 Abstract The Ottoman Empire, an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923, was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. Ottoman Turkish was used especially between the 16th and 19th centuries during the Ottoman Empire. This ornamented, artificial language separated the general population from intellectual and palace elite and a communication problem followed. Although the minorities of the Ottoman Empire were free to use their language amongst themselves, if they needed to communicate with the government they had to use Ottoman Turkish. This thesis explains these language differences and the resulting problems they created during the Empire. Examples of original correspondence are used to highlight the communication differences and the difficulties that ensured. From this study, the author concludes that Ottoman Turkish was not a separate language from Turkish; instead, it was a variation of Turkish in inexistence for approximately 600 years. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962). -

The approach to the theme of love was metaphorical and mystical in classical Ottoman poetry. During the period of modernisation (1839-1923), poets either rejected the theme of love altogether or abandoned Islamic aesthetics and adopted a Parnassian approach arguing that love was the expression of desire for physical beauty. A great variety of discourses on love developed during the republican period. Yahya Kemal sets the theme of love in Ottoman Istanbul and mourns the end of the relationship with the beloved who incarnates his conservative vision of national identity. -

doi: 10.2143/AWE.18.0.3287214 AWE 18 (2019) 195-224 TRAVELLERS’ TALES OF MINGRELIA AND OF THE ANCIENT FORTRESS OF NOKALAKEVI PAUL EVERILL Abstract The last decade has seen a flourishing of the tourist industry in Georgia, as increasing numbers of Western travellers discover its beauty, history and culture. However, it is still not well known, perhaps in part due to 70 years of Soviet occupation, and the destabilising effect of its expansionist neighbours to the north and the south over many years prior to that. Despite this, a number of travellers have left evocative accounts of the region since the 14th century, and this paper considers what these historical sources can tell modern scholars about life in Mingrelia, western Georgia, and particularly in Nokalakevi, a very ancient site. Introduction Frédéric Dubois de Montpéreux is most often credited with the first realisation that the remains at Nokalakevi represented those of Archaeopolis as described by Procopius in the sixth century AD. His publication of 1839 is undoubtedly an important step in recognising the importance of the site, however, as is often the way, there has been an increasing tendency to briefly acknowledge his contribution to the study of Nokalakevi without any re-interrogation of his original text. The idea that there might be more revealing information, in terms of both the site itself and of Mingrelian culture of the early 19th century, led to his original text being translated from French and, in turn, to the search for other travellers’ accounts. While foreign travellers might often provide inaccurate reports – through their own biases, or by being given and then repeating incorrect information – they often also describe aspects that would be unremarkable to native Georgian or Mingrelian chroniclers. -

Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi XXXVI / 1, 2021, 187-207 DOI: 10.18513/egetid.974606 PRAISING THE TURK AFTER NICOPOLIS: FRENCH SOURCES * Zeynep KOCABIYIKOĞLU ÇEÇEN Abstract The Crusade of Nicopolis (1396) fought and led by a great number of Franco Burgundian noblemen and knights against the Ottoman Turks was a great blow to Christendom and especially to the kingdom of France. The impact of the defeat in France can easily be detected from contemporary writings where, in addition to lamenting the defeat, there was a critical stance towards the crusaders coupled with an apparent awe towards Ottoman soldiers. The presence of similar themes in different genres of writing in the period may suggest an early humanist tendency that enables an objective evaluation of the infidel albeit hand in hand with the commonplace “scourge of God” theme. Moreover, however they should possibly be based on true accounts, the authors’ praise of Turks may have served a completely different agenda given the background of the contemporary decadence among men-at-arms in France, going through a difficult time in terms of its military and politics. Yenilginin Fransa’daki etkisi, yenilgiye ağıt yakmanın yanı sıra haçlılara karşı eleştirel bir tavırla beraber Türklere karşı belirgin bir hayranlık da sergileyen o dönemde yazılmış eserlerden kolaylıkla anlaşılabilir. Değişik edebi türlerde yazılmış eserlerde benzer temaların olması ve Türkler ile ilgili gözlemlerin gerçekliği Orta Çağ’da alışılmış olan “Tanrı’nın sopası” temasının yanında var olan ve kâfirlerin nesnel değerlendirilmelerini mümkün kılan erken bir hümanist eğilime işaret ediyor olabilir. -
