  • Elytra Reduction May Affect the Evolution of Beetle Hind Wings
Zoomorphology https://doi.org/10.1007/s00435-017-0388-1 ORIGINAL PAPER Elytra reduction may affect the evolution of beetle hind wings Jakub Goczał1 · Robert Rossa1 · Adam Tofilski2 Received: 21 July 2017 / Revised: 31 October 2017 / Accepted: 14 November 2017 © The Author(s) 2017. This article is an open access publication Abstract Beetles are one of the largest and most diverse groups of animals in the world. Conversion of forewings into hardened shields is perceived as a key adaptation that has greatly supported the evolutionary success of this taxa. Beetle elytra play an essential role: they minimize the influence of unfavorable external factors and protect insects against predators. Therefore, it is particularly interesting why some beetles have reduced their shields. This rare phenomenon is called brachelytry and its evolution and implications remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we focused on rare group of brachelytrous beetles with exposed hind wings. We have investigated whether the elytra loss in different beetle taxa is accompanied with the hind wing shape modification, and whether these changes are similar among unrelated beetle taxa. We found that hind wings shape differ markedly between related brachelytrous and macroelytrous beetles. Moreover, we revealed that modifications of hind wings have followed similar patterns and resulted in homoplasy in this trait among some unrelated groups of wing-exposed brachelytrous beetles. Our results suggest that elytra reduction may affect the evolution of beetle hind wings. Upon our arrival, we soon completed passport control and baggage reclaim and made our way out to the arrivals area, before making our way to the bus stop for the bus to the car-rental area to collect the minibuses. With luggage loaded, we boarded the vehicles for the journey to the Vercors region. We drove south-westwards on the A43 and A48 motorways, stopping to buy water at Aire L’Isle d’Abeau service area, before continuing south. We left the motorway at Voreppe, on the outskirts of Grenoble, and made our way, via Sessenage, up onto the Vercors Plateau to our destination, the Hotel Le Val Fleuri at Lans en Vercors. Along the way, we recorded Rook and Starling, neither of which, as yet, occur on the plateau, as well as Grey Heron. At the hotel, our base for the rest of the tour, we were met by our host, Eliane Bonnard.

(LEPIDOPTERA, NOLIDAE) IN LITHUANIA RI ČARDAS KAZLAUSKAS Department of Zoology, Vilnius University, M. K. Čiurlionio 21/27, LT-08412 Vilnius, Lithuania. E-mail: r.kazlauskas@gmail.com Introduction Whitish females of Idaea humiliata (Hufnagel, 1767) are very similar to Idaea fuscovenosa (Goeze, 1781) which are always whitish grey. Therefore these species can be recognised only by the structure of their genitalia. Similar situation is with the genus Nycteola , as it is not easy to identify species using morphological characters. The aim of this article is to present some data on distribution of these species in Lithuania based on the field research. Material and Methods Moths belonging to the Idaea genus were collected during a daytime with an entomological net, while Nycteola moths were collected at night using 160–400W mixed light lamp bulbs. The material is preserved in the collection of the Museum of Zoology of Vilnius University, Lithuania. • DNA Barcoding the Geometrid Fauna of Bavaria (Lepidoptera): Successes, Surprises, and Questions
DNA Barcoding the Geometrid Fauna of Bavaria (Lepidoptera): Successes, Surprises, and Questions Axel Hausmann1*, Gerhard Haszprunar1, Paul D. N. Hebert2 1 Entomology Department, Zoological Collection of the State of Bavaria, Munich, Germany, 2 Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: The State of Bavaria is involved in a research program that will lead to the construction of a DNA barcode library for all animal species within its territorial boundaries. The present study provides a comprehensive DNA barcode library for the Geometridae, one of the most diverse of insect families. Methodology/Principal Findings: This study reports DNA barcodes for 400 Bavarian geometrid species, 98 per cent of the known fauna, and approximately one per cent of all Bavarian animal species. Although 98.5% of these species possess diagnostic barcode sequences in Bavaria, records from neighbouring countries suggest that species-level resolution may be compromised in up to 3.5% of cases. All taxa which apparently share barcodes are discussed in detail. One case of modest divergence (1.4%) revealed a species overlooked by the current taxonomic system: Eupithecia goossensiata Mabille, 1869 stat.n. is raised from synonymy with Eupithecia absinthiata (Clerck, 1759) to species rank. Deep intraspecific sequence divergences (.2%) were detected in 20 traditionally recognized species. Conclusions/Significance: The study emphasizes the effectiveness of DNA barcoding as a tool for monitoring biodiversity. Open access is provided to a data set that includes records for 1,395 geometrid specimens (331 species) from Bavaria, with 69 additional species from neighbouring regions. Taxa with deep intraspecific sequence divergences are undergoing more detailed analysis to ascertain if they represent cases of cryptic diversity.

This paper represents the contribution to the knowledge of the longhorn beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) fauna of the City of Kragujevac (Central Serbia). Ba- sed on the material collected from 2010 to 2014 by authors, as well as on available litera- ture data, 66 species and 13 subspecies from five subfamilies were recorded, while the highest number of species is registered within the subfamilies Cerambycinae (26) and La- miinae (19). Four species are rarely found in Serbia: Vadonia moesiaca (Daniel & Daniel, 1891), Stictoleptura cordigera (Füsslins, 1775), S. erythroptera (Hagenbach, 1822), and Isotomus speciosus (Schneider, 1787). Subspecies Saphanus piceus ganglbaueri Branc- sik, 1886 is Balkan endemic. Six of recorded taxa [Cerambyx (Cerambyx ) cerdo cerdo Linnaeus, 1758, Morimus asper funereus (Mulsant, 1863), Agapanthia kirbyi (Gyllenhal, 1817), Cortodera flavimana flavimana (Waltl, 1838), Vadonia moesiaca and Saphanus piceus ganglbaueri ] are protected both nationally and internationally. The largest number of recorded taxa belong to Euro-Mediterranean (26) and Euro-Siberian (21) chorotypes. This suggests that both the habitats and climate in the City of Kragujevac and Central Serbia are increasingly assuming more sub-Mediterranean and subtropical features, primarily due to the negative human impact. Keywords: Cerambycidae, fauna, Kragujevac, chorotypes, Central Serbia.

A wide range of nectar sources had persisted until mid- summer, and when the sun came out at least, attracted large numbers and a rich diversity of butterflies. We explored from the lowlands to the high mountains, in weather that varied from warm and humid, to very hot and dry, albeit with persistent northerly winds on the last couple of days. In total the week produced 113 species of butterfly, together with many dazzling day-flying moths (particularly burnets) and other wonderful bugs and beasties. And almost nightly moth trapping gave us a window into the night-life, albeit dominated by Pine Processionaries, but with a good sample of the big, beautiful and bizarre. Add in to the mix the stunning scenery, a good range of mountain birds, a few mammals and reptiles, and wonderful food, drink and accommodation at Casa Sarasa: the perfect recipe for an outstanding holiday! Day 1 Wednesday 6th July We arrived at Zaragoza Airport, met Peter, and boarded the minibuses to be taken to Casa Sarasa in Berdún; it was sunny and hot, but there were still a few interesting birds to be seen en route, including White Stork, Booted Eagle, and Red and Black Kites.
