ABOUT THE TOUR

This exciting journey along the Silk Road begins in Xi’an, home of the Terracotta Army, one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century. Guarded by the Terracotta Army is the Mausoleum of the first Qin Emperor, Qin Shi Huang. During the time known as the Warring States Period Huang conquered the independent kingdoms of Han, Zhao, Yan, Wei, Chu and Qi to become the first emperor of a unified . From Xi’an participants will travel by train through the to Dunhuang. Four hundred and ninty-two temples carved into the hillside form the Magao Caves, or Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. The Mangao Caves of Dunghuang are famous for their statues and the 45,000 square meters of murals that highlight a 1,000 years of Buddhist art. Travellers will visit the ancient Gaochang ruins and the Asitana tombs. Over 1,000 articles of silk, wool, cotton and linen fabrics and countless treasures of Chinese history have been discovered since 1959 at the Asitana tombs. From Dunhuang the journey continues to its final destination in Wulumuqi, where travellers will visit the Xinjiang Province Museum which maintains an extensive collection of folk costumes and tools that represent each of the 12 minorities peoples of Xinjiang.

ABOUT TOMOKO TORIMARU Dr. Torimaru received her PhD in History and Technology of Chinese Textiles from Donghua University (Shanghai, China). She is the Co-Author/Author of One Needle, One Thread: Miao (Hmong) embroidery and fabric piecework from Guizhou, China; Imprints on Cloth: 18 years of Field Research among the Miao People in Guizhou, China; Spiritual Fabric: 16 years of Field Research among the Miao People in Guizhou, China; and numerous textile articles for notable publications. She received the Chinese Government Scholarship, 2001-2004. Registration fee is refundable before 30 Sep (less 10% processing fee). The balance of the tour will be paid to the respective travel agencies in China.

Included: Flight from Hong Kong to Xi’an, Trains from Xi’an to Dunghuang and Dunhuang to Tulufan, and tip to guides, drivers, luggage porters, etc. In addition to Dr. Torimaru, there will be two tour guides throughout the trip. Not included: Flight from Wulumuqi. Tour ends after the breakfast at the hotel in Wulmuqi.
