Perhaps the most important influences on my early thinking about this topic came from Paweł Frelik and Larry McCaffery, with whom I shared a rousing desert hike in the foothills of Borrego Springs. After an evening of food, drink, and lively exchange, I had the long-overdue epiphany to channel my training in musical performance more directly into my academic pursuits. The early support, friendship, and collegiality of these two had a tremendously positive effect on the arc of my scholarship; knowing they believed in the project helped me pencil its first sketchy contours—and ultimately see it through to the end. -
Just This Is It: Dongshan and the Practice of Suchness / Taigen Dan Leighton
“What a delight to have this thorough, wise, and deep work on the teaching of Zen Master Dongshan from the pen of Taigen Dan Leighton! As always, he relates his discussion of traditional Zen materials to contemporary social, ecological, and political issues, bringing up, among many others, Jack London, Lewis Carroll, echinoderms, and, of course, his beloved Bob Dylan. This is a must-have book for all serious students of Zen. It is an education in itself.” —Norman Fischer, author of Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong “A masterful exposition of the life and teachings of Chinese Chan master Dongshan, the ninth century founder of the Caodong school, later transmitted by Dōgen to Japan as the Sōtō sect. Leighton carefully examines in ways that are true to the traditional sources yet have a distinctively contemporary flavor a variety of material attributed to Dongshan. Leighton is masterful in weaving together specific approaches evoked through stories about and sayings by Dongshan to create a powerful and inspiring religious vision that is useful for students and researchers as well as practitioners of Zen. Through his thoughtful reflections, Leighton brings to light the panoramic approach to kōans characteristic of this lineage, including the works of Dōgen. This book also serves as a significant contribution to Dōgen studies, brilliantly explicating his views throughout.” —Steven Heine, author of Did Dōgen Go to China? What He Wrote and When He Wrote It “In his wonderful new book, Just This Is It, Buddhist scholar and teacher Taigen Dan Leighton launches a fresh inquiry into the Zen teachings of Dongshan, drawing new relevance from these ancient tales. -

It has been said that I was appointed by a party of East Lothian farmers to visit and report on the Canadas and the United States; but nothing could be more unfounded. A younger brother having expressed a wish to try his fortune as an American farmer, I resolved to explore the country for the purpose of enabling me to give an opinion on the step which he contemplated. With this single object in view, my Transatlantic excursion was originally planned, and ii afterwards performed, unfettered and unassisted by any party whatever. -
Hell - Another Great Deception
Hell - Another Great Deception (Copyright ©1truth1law.com 2015) The existence of a literal place called “hell,” where sinners suffer various forms of torment forever, has been ingrained in the minds of people for centuries and, in most cases, those who hold this belief accept it without much thought or study. Religious authorities have used this doctrine to control and manipulate their adherents by instilling fear and blind obedience in them. After all, who wants to be tormented for eternity? It’s better to listen to your church’s directives than turn your back on that authority and end up in hell as a result. Although it is not always stated in exactly these terms, a religious organization can make implications to this effect and its followers will accept and believe the lie. One of the problems associated with this false teaching is that it pictures Almighty God as an unjust and cruel tyrant who seems to enjoy seeing people suffer. In reality, it is “the god of this present evil age,” who gets satisfaction from the misfortunes of others, Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil age… (Gal. 1:3-4a; NKJV used throughout unless otherwise stated; emphasis added). But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of the age (Satan) has blinded … (2Cor. 4:3-4; Ed. notes in parenthesis; emphasis added). Those who see you (Satan) will gaze at you, and consider you, saying: ‘Is this this man (Satan when he is judged) who made the earth tremble (cf. -

PRINCETON, N. J. BT 885 .B7 1878 Brookes, James H. 1830-1897 Marantha MARANATHA OB THE LORD COMETH By JAMES H. BROOKES, Author of “How to be Saved,” “Mat Christians Dance, “ Gospel Hymns,” “ The Way Made Plain,” &c. FIFTH EDITION. ST. LOUIS: EDWARD BREDELL, PUBLISHER 212 N. Fifth Street. PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITION. The Lord has been pleased to own the testimony of this little volume to the truth of His pre-millennial advent, far beyond any expectation of the measure of its acceptance, at the time it was written. Sent forth in much weakness, it has led many to study the teach¬ ings of His own word; and thus having learned to “love his appearing,” (2 Tim. iv: 8), they are now eagerly “looking for that blessed hope,” (Tit. ii: 13). Again is it sent forth with the prayer that He will graciously use it still more, to awaken the attention of His beloved ones to the last promise that fell from His lips, “ Surely I come quickly,” and to call forth from their hearts the longing response, “ Even so, come, Lord Jesus,” (Rev. xxii: 20). WHY LITERAL SACRIFICES IN THE MILLENNIUM Tom's Perspectives by Thomas Ice A common objection to the consistent literal interpretation of Bible prophecy is found in Ezekiel’s Temple vision (Ezek. 40—48). Opponents argue that if this is a literal, future Temple, then it will require a return to the sacrificial system that Christ made obsolete since the prophet speaks of “atonement” (kiper) in Ezekiel 43:13, 27; 45:15, 17, 20. This is true! Critics believe this to be a blasphemous contradiction to the finished work of Christ as presented in Hebrews 10. Hank Hanegraaff says that I have “exacerbated the problem by stating that without animal sacrifices in the Millennium, Yahweh’s holiness would be defiled. That, for obvious reasons, is blasphemous.” He further says that such a view constitutes a return “to Old Covenant sacrifices.”1 “Is it heretical to believe that a Temple and sacrifices will once again exist,” ask John Schmitt and Carl Laney? “Ezekiel himself believed it was a reality and the future home of Messiah. -

Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -

He was the founder of two very active religious congregations during a time when other orders were being suppressed; he was a trusted and key liaison between the Papacy and the emerging Italian nation of the Risorgimento; above all, in troubled times, he was the saintly Christian educator who successfully wedded modern pedagogy to Christ's law and Christ's love for the poor young, and thereby deserved the proud title of Apostle of youth. -
