Llwyddwyd i gynnal eisteddfod bob blwyddyn ac eithrio 1914 a 1940 (Eisteddfod Radio). Cyflwynwyd cystadleuaeth y Fedal Ryddiaith yn 1937, Tlws y Ddrama yn 1961 (daeth i ben yn 1993), Gwobr Goffa Daniel Owen yn 1978 a Thlws y Cerddor yn 1990. He was unsuccessful, but nevertheless managed to John Leland save much material from St. Augustine’s Abbey at Canterbury. Afterwards he studied at All Souls, Oxford, where he met Thomas Caius, engraved map of Britain. He also proposed to publish a full description of all Henry’s and at Paris under Francis Sylvius. Royal Palaces. After entering Holy Orders in 1525, he became tutor to the son of Thomas Howard, Sadly, little or none of this materialised and Leland appears to have dissipated Duke of Norfolk. While so employed, he wrote much elegant Latin poetry in praise of much effort in seeking church advancement and in literary disputes such as that with the Royal Court which may have gained him favour with Henry VIII, for he was Richard Croke, who he claimed had slandered him.

    The Gatehouse This is the entrance to Abergavenny Castle, it is called the Gatehouse. It is a barbican gatehouse . A barbican was a wall or tower which protected a castle from attack. The Gatehouse today When Abergavenny Castle was first built, over 900 years ago, the gate was just a simple opening in the castle walls. What can you see? Abergavenny Castle Trail The Gatehouse On the first floor above the gate were comfortable rooms for the Constable of the Castle and his family to live in. The Constable was in charge of the Castle when the Lord was away. The room had a fireplace, large windows and access to the walkways along the walls, as well as a winch to lower or raise the drawbridge. You might be able to spot the two holes above the opening where the chains have worn the stone away? TaTaTakeTa ke a close look at the walls either side of the opeopening.ning. Can you spot any holes where the huge metal door hinges might have been? We think that this stone-built Gatehouse was added about 600 years ago. At this time the Welsh, led by Owain Glyn Dŵr (Owen Glendower) were fighting the Normans who were in control of much of Wales.     48 The diaries of Joseph Jenkins Australian Manuscripts Collection MS 13267 Acquired 1997 From time to time the musical lilt of Welsh voices drifts up towards the decorative ceilings of State Library Victoria’s La Trobe Gallery, the home of the manuscripts team. The geiriau (words) spoken belong to Joseph Jenkins, better known to Australian history buffs as the ‘Welsh Swagman’. Jenkins was born in 1818 in Ceredigion, Mid Wales, to a family of poets and farmers.1 He followed in his forebears’ footsteps until, plagued by personal strife, he set off for the distant shores of Australia at the unlikely age of 51. After arriving in Port Melbourne in 1869, Jenkins meticulously recorded his life as an itinerant labourer and new Victorian. Across 25 diaries (1869–94),2 he documented everything from the exorbitant price of a cabbage in drought- stricken 1860s Melbourne to the latest news about bushranger Ned Kelly, and his belief in Aboriginal land rights. Jenkins, a native Welsh speaker, kept his diaries mainly in English, as they offered him an opportunity to practise his written expression in this less familiar language. But he regularly peppers his texts with poems and notes written in his mother tongue, and in the 1870s and 1880s won recognition at Ballarat eisteddfods for recitations of his englynion (Welsh poetry). Extracts from Jenkins’ Australian diaries were published by his grandson William Evans in 1975 and went into several reprints, but in more recent times slipped off the cultural radar. An enthusiastic team of translators from the South Caulfield Community House Welsh-language group is now transcribing Jenkins’ words for new audiences.

    DAY VISIT ITINERARIES 9 Abergavenny Castle & Museum Enjoy a day out visiting two attractions in one. Abergavenny Museum is set in the grounds of a 'ruined' Norman castle, where you can enjoy a picnic during the summer and a brisk walk on colder days. Although the original castle is now largely in ruins there is still a tall stretch of curtain wall to the right of what would have been the gatehouse, originally from the 12th Century. The museum is housed in a former 19th Century hunting lodge built by the Marquess of Abergavenny within the walls of the castle. The museum has five permanent displays which tell the story of this historic market town from prehistory through to the present day. Sample Itinerary 11.00 am Arrive and take a tour of the museum. 11.45 am Explore Castle grounds. 1.00 - 2.00 pm Enjoy a picnic in the grounds or have lunch in Abergavenny. 2.00 pm Exploration of the market town of Abergavenny (* Tuesday is market day). 4.00 pm Depart for home. 9. Abergavenny Castle & Museum Where is it? Abergavenny Castle and Museum are situated at the end of Castle Street which is signposted from the roundabout on the A4143 in Abergavenny.
