Chenin Blanc Roussanne `The Wedge` 2018 Region Swartland is a wine-producing area 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. Swartland encompasses the vineyards on the northern side of the Paardeberg mountain in the south to the plains of Piketberg in the north. The smaller ward of Riebeekberg and the Kasteelberg Mountain lie in the eastern part of the region, while the cooler district of Darling separates the area from the Atlantic Ocean. The topography is varied, and vineyards can be found on steep mountain foothills or on gently folding hillsides. Producer Babylons Peak is a family run winery currently run by fourth generation farmer and winemaker Stephan Basson. They have some of the highest vineyards in the Swartland region which sit at around 700 metres above sea level. The area is characterised by decomposed granite soils and unique terroir which result in optimum soil expression and fruit purity. Tasting Notes A blend of Chenin Blanc and Roussanne from old dryland bush vines in the innovative Swartland area. Classic Chenin notes of apple and lemon zest combine with the Roussanne giving ripe apricot, honeysuckle and a round mouth feel, these are complemented with a crisp acidity and a mineral complexity from the granite soils. T ABLAS CREEK VINEYARD ROUSSANNE 2006 The 2006 Tablas Creek Vineyard Roussanne is Tablas Creek’s fi fth national release of its 100% Roussanne. The wine is exuberantly and elegantly in character of the Roussanne grape, with honey, honey- suckle, and pear aromatics, a rich, viscous mouthfeel with just a hint of oak, and a long, lingering fi nish. We use most of our Roussanne in our Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc each year. However, we often have some Roussanne lots in the cellar that are so powerfully characteristic of the varietal that we feel they would be too dominant in a blend. In these cases, we reserve a small quantity of this powerful Roussanne for a single-varietal bottling. As with all our wines, our Roussanne grapes were grown on our 120-acre certifi ed organic estate vineyard. The 2006 vintage was a study of contrasts, with a cold, wet start, a very hot early summer, a cool late summer and a warm, beautiful fall. Ample rainfall in late winter gave the grapevines ample groundwater, and produced relatively generous crop sizes. The relatively cool late- season temperatures resulted in a delayed but unhurried harvest, wines with lower than normal alcohols, strong varietal character, and good acids. The Roussanne grapes were whole cluster pressed, and fermented using native yeasts half in stainless steel and half in small French oak barrels. The wine was left on its lees for 6 months, and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. After fermentation the wines were blended, and bottled in May 2007. The 2006 Roussanne is a vibrant expression of the Roussanne grape.

Our Roussanne produces a distinctively rich white wine with wonderful aromatics reminiscent of tropical fruit, pineapple and honeysuckle. e palate is equally rich with hints of citrus, Mandarin orange, grilled nectarines and a light acidity. AVA: e Texas High Plains is the second largest AVA in Texas, comprising roughly 8 million acres in west Texas, mostly south of the panhandle region. e eastern border of the Texas High Plains AVA follows the 3000 elevation contour line along the Caprock Escarpment, the steep transitional zone separating the High Plains from the lower plains to the east. e elevation within the Texas High Plains gradually increases from 3,000 . to 4,100 . in the northwest portion of the AVA. is positioning provides an environment of long, hot dry summer days, which allow the grapes to mature and ripen to proper sugar levels, and cool evenings and nights, which help set the grape’s acidity levels. Grapes and wine have been produced in this region since the mid-1970s and vineyards here have become the major grape supplier to wineries throughout the state. ere are over 75 Wine Grape Varietals planted in the High Plains AVA, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Grenache, Merlot, Malbec, Dolcetto, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Viognier. Wine Makers Notes: We aged our Roussanne in new French Oak Barrels to provide a kiss of oak before moving the wine into stainless to complete its maturation. No malolactic fermentation was required with this grape as acidity is naturally so and the grape complex in phenolics.

2019 Roussanne
2019 Roussanne Vintage: 2019 is very similar to the near-perfect 2018 vintage. A cold winter with average rainfall made for a late bud-break. Ideal spring weather allowed for nice berry set and above average yields. Mild conditions throughout summer and fall allowed the fruit to slowly ripen and develop maximum flavor. The wines of 2019 are bold and intense, with nice acidity. Vineyard: This white varietal has been traditionally associated with the Northern Rhône, where it is blended with Marsanne to make white Hermitage wines. In 1998, three acres of Roussanne were planted on the southern end of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Growing in soils composed of volcanic rock and ash, the vines benefit from the gently sloped terrain and cooler Carneros temperatures. Roussanne is a challenging grape in both the vineyard and winery. However, when done correctly it can produce an aromatic and delicate wine with the structure and finesse to age. Harvest: ct. 19 - 29 • 24.6 ºBrix • 3.35 pH • 7.1 g/L TA Winemaking: All of the fruit was whole cluster pressed and fermented in French oak barrels (20%) new. After fermentation the wine remains in barrel on the lees (sur lie) for 6 months. A partial malolactic fermentation (30% complete) allows the wine to retain its natural acidity, while regular stirring of the lees (battonage) gives added complexity and richness. 2019 Grenache Blanc, bottled June 2020 Heavy winter rains continued into spring, hitting the vines during bloom. Persistent summer fog slowed ripening for a mid- September harvest. Whole-cluster pressed, each varietal was fermented separately in barrels and small concrete tanks. Stirring the barrels throughout malolactic enhanced aroma and texture. An early assemblage and bottling captured the wine’s freshness and beautiful fruit. It can be enjoyed now and over the next five years. Paso Robles is the epicenter of new Rhone plantings in California. We are fortunate to be able to source grapes from Adelaida Vineyards, who planted grenache blanc, roussanne, viognier and picpoul blanc among other more established varieties such as grenache noir, syrah and mourvedre (or mataro). Their vineyard lies on the limestone hills of the Adelaida District, thirteen miles from the Pacific coast. Warm days, cool nights and balanced vines promote great acidity in the grapes.
