Leaving Murray River county, we arrive in Burra, a town classified by the National Trust. Copper from Burra’s “Monster Mine” saved South Australia from bankruptcy in the 1940s. It was the largest metal mine in the country employing 1000 people. Cornish and Welsh miners flocked to Burra to work for the South Australian Mining Association and some set up homes in dugouts hewn out of the banks of the Burra Creek. We push through to Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre of mountains, covering eight times the area of Uluru and is 300 metres higher, such an awe- inspiring vision to behold! Tomorrow we have a chance to discover the extraordinary landscape that is over 800 million years old Stretching from Port Pirie to Lake Callebonna, the ancient mountain range known as the Flinders Ranges (or simply the Flinders) is the largest in South Australia and is known as an iconic Australian environment. Made up of a number of mountain ranges – the ABC, the Elder, the Chace and the Gammon in the far north - the rugged landscape is characterised by rolling hills, deep gorges, ridges and razorbacks and wide plains. The area is perhaps best known for the improbable rock formation, Wilpena Pound, but also includes wonderful national parks, the historic outback town of Quorn, the Clare Valley for wine tasting, as well as numerous ancient Aboriginal art sites. Visitors to the Flinders are likely to encounter a wide range of local wildlife including Kangaroos, Emus, Wedge-Tailed Eagles and the rare Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby. The Flinders Ranges are well known for their wildflowers but the dramatic gorges and spectacular peaks are the real highlights of this beautiful part of Australia. We will visit two gorges (subject to weather and road conditions), Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge. We then visit Gumcreek Station for lunch before returning to Wilpena late-afternoon. Included All meals Day 4: Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges (Tue, 2 March) Day Itinerary Today we visit Port Augusta, located at the top of the Spencer Gulf. Major transcontinental rail services pass through Port Augusta as do the major east/west and north/south highways. The town was once an important base for arid land explorations to the north and later became a busy shipping port. We take a brief look around, then embark on an historical train journey aboard the Pichi Richi Rail. This section of rail line is the original Port Augusta to Alice Springs line which travels through the famous Pichi Richi Pass to the historic township of Quorn. The railway heritage is reflected in the names of some of the old hotels - The Grand Junction and the Trans Continental. After lunch at the Great Northern Lodge, we continue north stopping at the Kanyaka Homestead just off the main road. Before P a g e | 6 returning to Wilpena, we spend some time at the Jeff Morgan Art Gallery. Jeff has a superb reputation in the art world with his awe-inspiring creations. Included All meals Day 5: Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges (Wed, 3 March) Day Itinerary Today we discover Wilpena Pound at leisure with a free day. You may like to take to the skies with an optional scenic flight (own expense) over stunning the ranges or embark on a spectacular bush walk.
