Classic Poetry Series Hayyim Nahman Bialik - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Hayyim Nahman Bialik(9 January 1873 – 4 July 1934) Hayim Nahman Bialik, also Chaim or Haim, was a Jewish poet who wrote primarily in Hebrew but also in Yiddish. Bialik was one of the pioneers of modern Hebrew poetry and came to be recognized as Israel's national poet. <b>Biography</b> Bialik was born in the village of Radi, Volhynia in the Ukrainian part of the Russian Empire to Yitzhak Yosef Bialik, a scholar and businessman, and his wife Dinah (Priveh). Bialik's father died in 1880, when Bialik was 7 years old. In his poems, Bialik romanticized the misery of his childhood, describing seven orphans left behind—though modern biographers believe there were fewer children, including grown step-siblings who did not need to be supported. Be that as it may, from the age 7 onwards Bialik was raised in Zhitomir (also Ukraine) by his stern Orthodox grandfather, Yaakov Moshe Bialik. In Zhitomir he received a traditional Jewish religious education, but also explored European literature. At the age of 15, inspired by an article he read, he convinced his grandfather to send him to the Volozhin Yeshiva in Lithuania, to study at a famous Talmudic academy under Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, where he hoped he could continue his Jewish schooling while expanding his education to European literature as well. Attracted to the Jewish Enlightenment movement (Haskala), Bialik gradually drifted away from yeshiva life. Poems such as HaMatmid ("The Talmud student") written in 1898, reflect his great ambivalence toward that way of life: on the one hand admiration for the dedication and devotion of the yeshiva students to their studies, on the other hand a disdain for the narrowness of their world. -

I NNA N ARODITSKAYA Is Argentine tango Russian, and how Jewish is Russian tango? …now I’m here, I’m dancing a tango (BERNSTEIN, CANDIDE) Introduction ver since I personally and quite accidentally stepped into the tango scene in Chicago, I have been intrigued by the history of tango in Russia. The process of Eunwrapping Russian infatuation with sound, movement, and the social implications of tango guided me to a surprising significant link, little explored in scholarship, between tango and Jews. This paper attempts to entwine two dramatic immigration stories, of Jews and tango. The identification of Russian Jews in the US diaspora with tango flows from an involvement with tango that predates the Russian Revolution, manifests itself in Russian modernism, and has a unique connection with the culture of Odessa. Personal When late evening descends on the city and most Chicagoans are about to slip into pajamas, I pull out my pumps and whatever glittering decoration I can find – earrings, a bracelet, a belt, and a dress with slits that enable swift steps. A professor goes to town; a magical word – tango – transports me to a different world called “milonga” – a place for tango dances where I and hundreds of others plunge into a weekly reunion of music, gliding, pivoting, ornamenting that suspends time. About the time I immigrated to the US in the mid-1990s, «nomadic milongas […] were mushrooming. This established understanding of a South African Jewish identity is informed by cultural analyses that focus on tensions arising from being Jewish citizens of South Africa. The present thesis draws on socio-musical sources not yet introduced to general historiographies to question this construction of Jewish identity. These sources refer to music-related items that appear in the South African Jewish Chronicle and the Zionist Record newspaper publications of 1930-1948. The purpose of subjecting music reportage in local Jewish newspapers to a rigorous content analysis, is to open understandings of Jewish culture in South Africa from wider, cosmopolitan perspectives and to locate the function that music might have had in cultural processes of identity formation. -

Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Marcie Cohen Ferris Jonathan Boyarin Timothy Marr Karen Auerbach Seth Kotch © 2017 Josh Parshall ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Josh Parshall: Yiddish Politics in Southern States: The Southern District of the Arbeter Ring, 1908-1949 (Under the direction of Marcie Cohen Ferris) Between 1908 and 1925, East European Jewish immigrants in nearly twenty southern cities founded branches of the Arbeter Ring (Workmen‘s Circle), a socialist-oriented, Yiddish- speaking fraternal organization. While the New York-based group was a well-known part of the Jewish labor movement in the North, its southern history remains underexplored. This dissertation demonstrates that secular Yiddish culture and left-wing politics served the needs of early twentieth-century immigrants as they both adapted to and resisted the economic, political and racial atmosphere of the New South. Branches offered mutual aid benefits, collected funds for international relief, hosted cultural events and operated Yiddish classes for children. They also promoted Socialist candidates and supported striking workers. In the 1920s, pro-Communist members in several cities formed radical splinter branches that eventually left the organization to join the International Workers Order. Through their cultural programs, Arbeter Ring members built local iterations of a transnational Yiddish public sphere, even as their efforts to educate their children in Yiddish anticipated the ongoing flourishing of secular Yiddish culture. -

LEO ZEITLIN: A FORGOTTEN LEGACY by Paula Eisenstein Baker, Robert S. Nelson and Aron Zelkowicz1 A superbly talented composer and arranger, Leo Zeitlin (1884–1930) was also a violinist, violist, conductor, impresario and teacher. He was an important member of the Society for Jewish Folk Music in St Petersburg, which was the catalyst for a brief but golden age of art-music on Jewish themes drawn from cantillation, liturgical tunes and folksong. The major legacy of the Society was the body of works by its member composers,2 and between 1909 and 1918 it published at least eighty original compositions and arrangements, four of them by Zeitlin (three of them included on this CD: tracks 2, 8 and A). Solomon Rosowsky, a fellow member of the Society, wrote of Zeitlin: His skill at orchestration was the subject of envy among his friends in the field of Jewish music. With this gift he faithfully served the St Petersburg circle of Jewish composers, dressing their solo and chamber works in a shining orchestral garment.3 When he was almost thirteen, Zeitlin left his birthplace of Pinsk (now in Belarus) for Odessa to attend the music school of the local branch of the Imperial Russian Music Society.4 By the time he had completed the academic and music curriculum, someone with his training could easily have begun to play professionally. But there was a compelling reason for any young man of nineteen to continue formal studies: a diploma from either the St Petersburg or Moscow Conservatoire would earn him the title ‘free artist’, which would promote him to the social estate of ‘honoured citizen’, exempting him from the draft and allowing him to travel freely. -
