Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. E d., Punjab University, Chandigarh, India Abstract In historical terms, the study of "youth cultures" is a relatively new of area of sociological analysis. The term youth culture is used generally in reference to the ways adolescents set themselves apart from the adult culture. The study of youth culture in the social and human sciences has become a major academic enterprise since the 1960s. Hip hop culture or hip-hop is a cultural movement that formed during the late 1960s among African American youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. Punk "started out as a music-based subculture"; that much is agreed upon by all, whether they laud punk or deplore it. In sociology, the jock is thought to be included within the socialite subculture, which also contains the preps and Ivy-Leaguers. Geoffrey Pearson in his work namely "Hooligan: A History of Respectable Fears" published in 1983 gives us a solid historical perspective on the "recurrent problem of youth" in Britain throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. In recent developments in identity theory, identities are organized as control systems that act to maintain congruency between the internalized self-meanings (one's identity standard) and perceptions of the meaning of the self in ongoing social situations. -

Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled. -

A: I started at Colby College in Maine as Music Director at the college radio station. Then I went to graduate school in western Michigan studying environmental geology because I really didn't think that the radio business was solid enough for me. While applying for jobs in environmental studies, my old roomate from Colby, Scott Anderson, called me from L.A. He was then doing the R&B charts at Cashbox. He said there were a lot of people interested in a dance music, or at that time, "disco" tip sheet. At that time disco was real big... He had great profit predictions so I said "What the Hell". ..I left graduate school, finishing everything but my thesis, and came back to New York and set up the business. A few months later Scott came in and we started Disco News in about 1978. Q: Why didn't you go to L.A. and join him there to start the publication? A: He was from the east and we both knew that disco was really happening here, not there. All of the records were coming out of the northeast, especially out of New York. Q: Go on from there. A: It was a weekly tip sheet. Then when the industry got hit hard and disco took the blame we changed to a bi-weekly. -

Certainly there is no consensus among critics and scholars as to the survival of the literate, “cultivated” tradition of Western music as the twenty-first century advances, and even if there were, why should anyone doing popular music studies care, other than to register a small but real sense of satisfaction at avoiding what looks like a losing horse in the music history championship stakes? It oughtn’t matter much to the study of popular music whether, as partisans within the classical world indignantly retort, audiences for the symphony and opera are actually holding steady; whether, as classical record label executives report, the latest crossover hit has temporarily stabilized their bottom line; whether, as contemporary classical composers now has- ten to assure us, they really do care if you listen.2 And indeed, these material-cultural issues are of little import for the discussion that follows.
