  • The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Keywords: dromosphere, dromology, Afrofuturism, electro-rap, thirdspace, fantasy, Newcleus, Strange U Introduction During the mid-1970s, the language of New York City’s pioneering hip hop practitioners brought them fame amongst their peers, yet the methods of its musical production brought heavy criticism from established musicians.

●BREAKING 4 NEW CORONAVIRUS-RELATED BREAKING: 4 NEW CORONAVIRUS- DEATHS AND 131 NEW CASES ARE RELATED DEATHS AND 131 NEW CASES CONFIRMED IN MASS. ARE CONFIRMED IN MASS. Inventor brings 3-D vision to music By James Sullivan Globe Correspondent, April 2, 2013, 12:00 a.m. Bill Sebastian inside a prototype of a dome used for displaying visual music content. Sebastian is the founder of Visual Music Systems, which is developing technology to make music a fully visual experience. DINA RUDICK/GLOBE STAFF On the edge of the woods in Falmouth rests the decaying hulk of one man’s youthful ambition. It’s the bones and innards of an instrument that was designed to facilitate a pretty big notion: human contact with another dimension. The story behind its creation — and rebirth — involves the Vietnam War, New Kids on the Block, the early days of the Internet, and one MIT dropout’s lifelong determination. Sun Ra performed on keyboards at Nightstage June 10, 1986. PHIL SPRING/GLOBE STAFF/BOSTON GLOBE In the late 1970s, the instrument led to concert appearances with the late, cosmically attuned jazz bandleader Sun Ra. Now Bill Sebastian, 61, the man who built the instrument, has been working in a Boston office on his invention’s digital successor, which he’s almost ready to show the world. It is a kind of optical synthesizer called the Outerspace Visual Communicator, or OVC. Designed to let the user “play” with images as part of a musical composition, the original OVC was a custom-built keyboard featuring an array of sensors to be brushed with fingertips (“like fingerpainting”).

  • Biography -- Printable Version
Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

WHO'S WHO AT TOMMY BOY RECORDS TOM SILVERMAN - President 210 E. 90 St. Basement Mew York, N.Y. 10028 (212) 348-4700 INTERVIEW WITH TOM SILVERMAN Q: Give me some background on you personally. A: I started at Colby College in Maine as Music Director at the college radio station. Then I went to graduate school in western Michigan studying environmental geology because I really didn't think that the radio business was solid enough for me. While applying for jobs in environmental studies, my old roomate from Colby, Scott Anderson, called me from L.A. He was then doing the R&B charts at Cashbox. He said there were a lot of people interested in a dance music, or at that time, "disco" tip sheet. At that time disco was real big... He had great profit predictions so I said "What the Hell". ..I left graduate school, finishing everything but my thesis, and came back to New York and set up the business. A few months later Scott came in and we started Disco News in about 1978. Q: Why didn't you go to L.A. and join him there to start the publication? A: He was from the east and we both knew that disco was really happening here, not there. All of the records were coming out of the northeast, especially out of New York. Q: Go on from there. A: It was a weekly tip sheet. Then when the industry got hit hard and disco took the blame we changed to a bi-weekly.

Tickets are on sale today and available at Ticketmaster.com and the San Manuel Box Office for $55, $65, and $75. Beginning in 1978 with three young friends from the Boston area, New Edition grew to make their mark on music. From their initial Jackson 5-inspired material to their later more mature fusion of hip-hop and R&B, the group, which grew to have five members, established much of the groundwork for the style of music known as the ‘new jack swing’. They were discovered by producer Maurice Starr, who wrote their first smash hit “Candy Girl.” The single topped R&B charts, and was the title of the debut album. In 1984, they scored their biggest pop hit with the Top Five single “Cool It Now,” which ended with a short rap section, and claimed a spot of the next album All for Love. Later that year, they released a holiday album and struck an endorsement deal with Coke. Over the last 25 years, New Edition has taken different forms and has even split up.

  • The Story of ORCH5 Robert Fink, UCLA Germany Has a Very Long
The Story of ORCH5 Robert Fink, UCLA Germany has a very long classical music tradition. - Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk, 2004 The DJ plays your favorite blasts, Takes you back to the past – Music’s magic! (poof) - Afrika Bambaataa, “Planet Rock” (1982) “Tomorrow’s Music Today” - Advertising slogan for the Fairlight Computer Music Instrument, ca. 1983 1 PRELUDE: The Great Liberation, or, Is there Life after Death? The “death of (European) classical music” may seem a somewhat tired, even irrelevant trope with which to start an essay in the present venue—which is, after all, devoted to the study around the globe of (clearly quite healthy) popular music. Certainly there is no consensus among critics and scholars as to the survival of the literate, “cultivated” tradition of Western music as the twenty-first century advances, and even if there were, why should anyone doing popular music studies care, other than to register a small but real sense of satisfaction at avoiding what looks like a losing horse in the music history championship stakes? It oughtn’t matter much to the study of popular music whether, as partisans within the classical world indignantly retort, audiences for the symphony and opera are actually holding steady; whether, as classical record label executives report, the latest crossover hit has temporarily stabilized their bottom line; whether, as contemporary classical composers now has- ten to assure us, they really do care if you listen.2 And indeed, these material-cultural issues are of little import for the discussion that follows. What cannot be ignored is the fundamental epistemological crisis that besets Western music as it 1 Hütter interviewed by Sergey Chernov, St.
