American Songwriter
JASON BOLAND Written by Evan Schlansky - May 19th Jason Boland & The Stragglers are a Southern country rock institution with a rabid fan base. We quizzed the Oklahoma native about his rugged new, Shooter Jennings-produced album Dark and Dirty Mile, his songwriting heroes and more. Who are your songwriting heroes? Bob Childers, Mike McClure, Tom Skinner, Randy Crouch, Todd Snider, Billy Joe Shaver, Van Morrison, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and Johnny Cash. Tell us a bit about your new album. The new album is titled Dark and Dirty Mile. It is nine new songs and a couple of covers from our mentors. We recorded it down at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin with the help of our buddy, Shooter Jennings. How would you compare it to 2011′s Rancho Alto? Every album you hope to inch closer to what you hear in your head. Dark and Dirty Mile has a tone less flattered by modern technology, and catches a funny little glimpse of who we are as players. What’s your opinion on the way modern country songs are written, where co- writers crank out a song a day in the hopes of getting a good one? Every industry has its factory jobs that turn out quantity, but if the consumer left it on the shelf they would cease to exist. Has modern country music gotten any better in the past five years? Not at all. When did you start writing songs? Were they good right away, or did that come later? I started writing songs in high school, I remember feeling good about the songs at the time, so they must of down their job. -

Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away. -
Billy Joe Shaver
BIOGRAPHY: BILLY JOE SHAVER OUTLAW ERA’S TREND-SETTING SONGWRITER Billy Joe Shaver has recorded more than twenty albums, but his gritty songwriting has always outshined his career as a singer. That was especially true in 1973 when Waylon Jennings chose nine of Shaver’s songs for Honky Tonk Heroes, among the first and the best of the Outlaw albums. Willie Nelson has declared Shaver “definitely the best writer in Texas . Everything he writes is just poetry.” Born on August 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas, Billy Joe Shaver was raised by his grandmother after his father left the family and his mother took a job in Waco, sixty miles away. Shaver grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry, as well as the rhythm and blues of Corsicana’s African American community, and he began writing songs by age eight. Once out of school, he took different jobs, including one in a lumber mill, where he accidentally cut off two fingers and part of a third on his right hand. “I wouldn’t ever have gone into music if I hadn’t lost big for me,” Shaver said. “I couldn’t possibly get them my fingers,” he said. across the way [Jennings] could.” Seeking a career in songwriting, Shaver finally was While there are no major hits on Honky Tonk Heroes, hired in 1968 at Bobby Bare’s publishing company in it is considered Jennings’s first important work of the Nashville. He got his big break in 1972 when Nelson Outlaw era. Shaver attracted other big-name artists, invited him to perform at his Fourth of July concert in including Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash, Tom T. -
JAIME WYATT SIGNS to NEW WEST RECORDS to RELEASE NEON CROSS, PRODUCED by SHOOTER JENNINGS, MAY 29Th, 2020
JAIME WYATT SIGNS TO NEW WEST RECORDS TO RELEASE NEON CROSS, PRODUCED BY SHOOTER JENNINGS, MAY 29th, 2020 “Neon Cross refines Wyatt’s honky-tonk sound into something more lush, layered, and complex.” Rolling Stone Jaime Wyatt will release Neon Cross on May 29th, 2020. The 11-song set was produced by the two-time Grammy Award winning producer Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker) and is her New West Records debut. The album features Jennings on the song “Hurt So Bad” and the legendary Jessi Colter on Wyatt’s trad-country feminist anthem “Just A Woman.” It also features Neal Casal on guitar, harmonica, and wurlitzer in one of his final recordings before his death in August of 2019. Neon Cross is the anticipated follow up to Wyatt’s 2017 Felony Blues EP, which was named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone Country, Vice/Noisey, Wide Open Country and more. Wyatt and Shooter Jennings boldly color outside the country lines on Neon Cross, taking a wide-lens sonic and stylistic approach to the songs. Though that sonic backdrop is all in service to Wyatt’s incisive lyrics and expressive vocals, which can be achingly sensitive and sincere one minute, and unflinchingly cocksure and dispassionate the next. On Jennings as a producer, Wyatt said, “What really sold me on Shooter is that he understands grooves — he gets how to instruct a band to build a groove that is so powerful underneath a song. And it’s crazy because that’s what Waylon [Jennings, Shooter’s father] did. -

Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time. -
