Groundbreaking of Hillsboro Hops Youth Field FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: Brian Berger, BBPR 503.701.2215 [email protected] Hillsboro Hops Contribute $300,000 to Fund State-Of-The-Art Turf Field for Boys Baseball & Girls Softball Hillsboro, OR (June 6, 2018) – The Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) Fund announced a major gift of $300,000 to the Hillsboro School District that will fund a new state-of-the-art Hillsboro Hops Youth Field. The Hillsboro Hops Youth Field will be used for boys baseball and girls softball and is part of Glencoe High School’s new multi-use turf field funded by the Hillsboro Bond. There was a groundbreaking ceremony this morning with dignitaries including Mike McMurray (Chairman & Co-Owner, Hillsboro Hops), K.L. Wombacher (President & General Manager, Hillsboro Hops), Mike Scott (Superintendent, Hillsboro School District), Rian Petrick (Director of Extracurricular Programs & Community Outreach, Hillsboro School District), Steve Callaway (Hillsboro Mayor) and Jerry Willey (Washington County Commissioner Elect) to officially commence the construction of the field, which will be made of FieldTurf. “We are excited about this collaboration with the Hillsboro School District to develop a high quality year round youth field,” said Hillsboro Hops President & GM KL Wombacher. “Over the last 3 years youth baseball has seen an average yearly growth of 14.3%, which is exciting. To accommodate this growth and inspire more kids to play in the future locally, we need more fields and high quality fields. We are very motivated to help accomplish that and expect this field to be a great starting point.” ADD QUOTE FROM HSD: The field is expected to be completed by X (date). About Hillsboro Hops: The 2014 & 2015 Northwest League Champion Hillsboro Hops are the Single-A baseball affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. The team’s season runs from mid-June to early September. The franchise relocated to Hillsboro in 2012 and began play in 2013 in a new state-of-the-art 4,500 capacity ballpark, Ron Tonkin Field. The Hops are part of the 58-year old Northwest League, which includes teams in Boise, Eugene, Salem-Keizer, Tri-Cities, Spokane, Everett and Vancouver BC. Major League stars who rose to prominence via the Northwest League include Ken Griffey Jr., Felix Hernandez, Edgar Martinez, Reggie Jackson, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Tony Gwynn and Dansby Swanson.     CASE STUDY The Case Study of the Ron Tonkin Field/ Hillsboro Hops Public-Private Partnership The Hillsboro City Council set out to expand the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex and bring professional baseball to town as a means of enhancing residents’ quality of life. In doing so, the Council had several goals, including: 1. To create a facility that could be used year-round for youth sports, adult sports, special and community events. 2. To continue to support fields for public use, particularly to support athletic programs of the Hillsboro School District, as well as regional and state university athletic programs. 3. To support local youth with the creation of new jobs. 4. To support economic development in Hillsboro and help local businesses by increasing tourism spending and related entertainment spending. 5. To build regional and national awareness of Hillsboro as a means of highlighting our exceptional community. After a significant investment of time to gather and evaluate all available information in order to reach the best informed decision, the Hillsboro City Council authorized a public-private partnership with Short Season, LLC, owners of the soon-to-be named Hillsboro Hops. The agreement called for Short Season, LLC to relocate the team from Yakima and begin play in Hillsboro in June 2013 at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. In the Hops’ first three years playing at Hillsboro Ballpark/Ron Tonkin Field (renamed in 2014), the team sold more than 430,000 tickets. In addition to hosting the only professional baseball team in the Portland metro area, Ron Tonkin Field continues to play host to high school football, soccer, baseball, and charity fundraising events.

The Diamondbacks provide players and coaches to the team, as well as a stadium for the baseball prospects to play their games. The team is considered a Short Season Single A baseball club that features predominately first year players (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.). The team was previously based in Yakima, Washington and just recently relocated to Hillsboro, Oregon in 2013. Upon moving to Hillsboro, the team acquired new ownership, new facilities and a new name. The previously named Yakima Bears became the Hillsboro Hops. Ron Tonkin Field, which has the ability to host 4,500 people at capacity, was built for the Hops and is used for youth soccer and lacrosse in the off-season (Gordon Faber Recreation Complex, n.d.). The Hops are a part of the Northwest Conference, in which it plays other short season teams in the Pacific Northwest. Although supported by the Diamondbacks, the Hops are a privately and locally owned business. Short Season LLC owns the Hillsboro Hops Professional Baseball team. There are 30 investors that are a part of the ownership group. President Mike McMurray and his wife, Vice President and CFO, Laura McMurray, live in Hillsboro. The McMurray’s are highly involved in the daily operations of the team (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.). The organization’s mission statement is “to provide a memorable first-class experience so that we can enrich the lives of our fans, staff, players and community” (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.).
