Alt-Nation: Gang of Four, Sonny Vincent and Jesse Malin Alt-Nation: Gang of Four, Sonny Vincent and Jesse Malin I don’t have many words to expend on this, but this has been a dream come true in terms of content. I don’t know when Sonny Vincent’s interview is coming in, but we will have online interviews with all three of these guys who have been heroes of mine. I only hope people come out and support all of these shows. This is rock ’n’ roll A to Z or at least first wave of punk to post-punk to ’90s Dead Boys punks to indie rock ‘n’ roll! Damn, we should start charging money for this rag. Gang of Four Gang of Four emerged out of the embers of the UK late ’70s punk scene as one of the most innovative and enduring bands from that era. Gang of Four’s debut release, Entertainment, was a mash-up of punk, dub and funk with searing political lyrics on classics like “Damaged Goods” and “Love Like Anthrax.” Gang of Four has been a beacon in the post-punk world now for over three decades. They continued off and on through the years with revolving lineups to make eight original studio albums, the most recent being 2013’s What Happens Next (Metropolis Records). Despite being the first Gang of Four album to have guitarist Andy Gill being the lone original member, What Happens Next continues the sound of stabbing guitars over a post-punk dub on great tracks like ”Broken Talk” and “Dead Souls.” I got offered a chance to talk to a legend and the one man gang and Andy Gill so why the hell not? Check out motifri.com/andygill for more and go to the show! Gang of Four and The New Regime will rock The Met Café on October 3. Sonny Vincent If there ever was a punk rock Illuminati, Sonny Vincent would be the grand wizard. You want a blueprint on getting into punk rock? Just listen to Sonny Vincent records and who plays on them. He started in a CBGB-era punk band called the Testors and has since gone on to play with people from the Velvet Underground, The Replacements, The Damned, The Stooges, MC 5, Sonic Youth, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Rocket From The Crypt and so many more. I got turned on to this guy and the next guy in this column, Jesse Malin, from Joey Ramone. In other words, this is the real deal. Sonny rips with a mix of molten guitar licks that channel Johnny Thunders, Chuck Berry and Wayne Kramer. There have been many who followed in those footsteps, but Vincent has had so many classic songs like “Down on Me,” “Funny Now (She Blew It)” and “Scratchin’ on The 8 Ball.” Just buy the The Good, The Bad, The Ugly for real meat and potatoes punk rock and come to the show. There will be an interview online with Sonny, who wasn’t available at press time because he’s on tour. As an added bonus, go early to see M.O.T.O. and The Worried. Get there early, rock out and appreciate that Sonny Vincent is kind of like the punk rock version of Buddy Holly. Sonny Vincent, Zin Vetro, M.O.T.O., and The Worried will bring the thunder to AS220 on October 6. Jesse Malin – Outsiders Jesse Malin’s second album of the year kicks off with a Bo Diddley beat on the title track with a hook catchy enough to bring S.A.R.S. back. Malin brings the dance party, but at the same time goes with the theme of the Outsiders with the lines “we all get corrupted.” Malin comes up with a way to top the Ramones with using “bye baby bye” on “San Francisco,” which also shifts to Colorado and Arizona, which also deals with not being a pawn in someone else’s world. “Here’s The Situation” starts with a Jersey Shore reference, but by the time Malin’s lyrics and guest guitarist J. Mascis’s guitar solo explode, it is easy to forget about bad reality TV. “Whitestone City Limits” is a roadhouse rave-up about where Malin grew up. “In The Summer” starts with a drum beat leading into the riff similar to Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” as Malin guides it into his own vision. There is a cover of The Clash’s “Stay Free,” and Malin fleshes out the beauty of the tune. The centerpiece of Outsiders is the final tune, “You Know It’s Dark When Atheists Start To Pray.” The nugget channels early ’70s Kinks, New Orleans’s vibe and a Dylan lyric flow. Malin and his band are one of the best live bands out there. Somehow Providence landed the official release of the Outsiders on Friday night. Let’s get out and show them why we deserve it! Jesse Malin, Matthew Ryan, Bob Kendall and more will rock Firehouse 13 on October 9. Email music news to [email protected].

  • Three New Acts for Northside
MC50 2018-04-17 10:00 CEST Three new acts for NorthSide The festival has found room to add Yungblud, Soleima, and a special anniversary edition of MC5 to the line-up NorthSide announced this year's festival poster with 41 primary international acts at the end of February, but the festival has still been able to add another three acts to the NorthSide 2018 line-up. MC50 The most iconic beginning to a punk song ever was delivered by Detroit's own Wayne Kramer, who in 1968 shouted "And right now ... right now ... right now it's time to ... kick out the jams, motherfuckers!" from the stage of the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. That’s how the title song from the debut album "Kick Out the Jams" by MC5 starts, which today is considered one of the most important albums from the time just before the world fell in love with Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, and The Clash. To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking album, Kramer has gathered a new band around him, which he calls the MC50. The band consists of the guitarist Kim Thayil from Soundgarden, Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, King's X bassist Doug Pinnick, and Marcus Durant from Zen Guerrilla. They will this summer perform all eight songs from the debut album plus other favorites from the MC5 catalog . MC50 will play Friday June 8th at NorthSide 2018 Yungblud One of the hottest comets on the English music scene right now is Dominic Harrison, who performs under the name of Yungblud.

    4. Northern England 1. Progress in Hell Northern England was both the center of the European industrial revolution and the birthplace of industrial music. From the early nineteenth century, coal and steel works fueled the economies of cities like Manchester and She!eld and shaped their culture and urban aesthetics. By 1970, the region’s continuous mandate of progress had paved roads and erected buildings that told 150 years of industrial history in their ugly, collisive urban planning—ever new growth amidst the expanding junkyard of old progress. In the BBC documentary Synth Britannia, the narrator declares that “Victorian slums had been torn down and replaced by ultramodern concrete highrises,” but the images on the screen show more brick ruins than clean futurescapes, ceaselessly "ashing dystopian sky- lines of colorless smoke.1 Chris Watson of the She!eld band Cabaret Voltaire recalls in the late 1960s “being taken on school trips round the steelworks . just seeing it as a vision of hell, you know, never ever wanting to do that.”2 #is outdated hell smoldered in spite of the city’s supposed growth and improve- ment; a$er all, She!eld had signi%cantly enlarged its administrative territory in 1967, and a year later the M1 motorway opened easy passage to London 170 miles south, and wasn’t that progress? Institutional modernization neither erased northern England’s nineteenth- century combination of working-class pride and disenfranchisement nor of- fered many genuinely new possibilities within culture and labor, the Open Uni- versity notwithstanding. In literature and the arts, it was a long-acknowledged truism that any municipal attempt at utopia would result in totalitarianism.

Western Herald – SATURDAY: Jeremy Porter & the Tucos bring unique genre blend to Kalamazoo http://www.westernherald.com/arts-and-entertainment/saturday-jeremy-porter-the-tucos-bring-unique-genre-blend-to- kalamaz oo/ March 16, 2013 Craig Manning A&E Editor Growing up in Marquette, Mich., Jeremy Porter was probably one of those guys who spent as much time listening to the radio and spinning records on the turntable as he did hitting the books. At 16, he helped launch one of the Upper Peninsula’s first punk bands —called The Regulars—and instead of making curfew on Thursday nights, he spent them hanging out in ‘juice joints,’ cranking the amplifiers to capacity and, as his bio says, learning “what a rock bar smells like.” But while Porter’s educators probably frowned on that sort of behavior, clearly Porter is getting the last laugh. The singer/songwriter—who transplanted to the Detroit area back in the 80s—built a new trio called the Tucos in 2010, recruiting Jason Bowes (bass) and Gabriel Doman (drums) as his back-up. Almost three years later, the trio has supported nationally-recognized acts like Jesse Malin & the St. Mark’s Social and Whitey Morgan & The 78’s and brought their unique blend of 70s power pop, 80s punk rock and 90s alt-country to bars and clubs all over the midwest. On Saturday night, the Tucos will hit the stage at Louie’s Trophy House in Kalamazoo to support their excellent new full-length, Partner in Crime. Porter’s influences are rich and varied, all manifesting themselves at some point during Partner in Crime’s 46-minute runtime.

Traditionally, the purposefulness and relevance of a singer-songwriter were defined by something unique in their lyrical acumen, vocal skills and/or guitar or piano accompaniment. In the 1990s this paradigm was tested by the trend towards larger orchestrastion and towards electronic orchestration. In the 2000s it became harder and harder to give purpose and meaning to a body of work mostly relying on the message. Many singer-songwriters of the 2000s belonged to "Generation X" but sang and wrote for members of "Generation Y". Since "Generation Y" was inherently different from all the generations that had preceeded it, it was no surprise that the audience for these singer-songwriters declined. Since the members of "Generation X" were generally desperate to talk about themselves, it was not surprising that the number of such singer- songwriters increased. The net result was an odd disconnect between the musician and her or his target audience. The singer-songwriters of the 2000s generally sounded more "adult" because... they were.

By stripping all 13 tracks of their pony-stomp synths and high-gloss studio sheen, he reveals the bones of what are essentially timeless, genre-less songs... brings two divergent artists together in smart, unexpected ways, and somehow manages to reveal the best of both of them" (Entertainment Weekly); "Adams's version of '1989' is more earnest and, in its way, sincere and sentimental than the original" (The New Yorker); "the universality of great songwriting shines through" (Billboard).
