  • Outline for Final Paper
Egiziani-Italiani: Balancing Two Identities A Brief Ethnographic Exploration of Clash, Cultural Pluralism and Identity-Negotiation in Milan, Italy. An Honors Capstone Project by Amy `Aminah' Teachout General University Honors, Spring 2008 Advisor: Prof. David Vine Abstract: This project sought a nuanced understanding of migration and identity negotiation among Egyptian immigrants in Milan, Italy. The primary goal was to identify components of cultural pluralism and sources of cultural clash via ethnographic research. In this paper, I analyze the experience of immigration based on research conducted over three months among Egyptian-Italians with family-run businesses and native Milanese in two neighborhoods salient for their immigrant population. A thorough review of related literature preceded my research and is also provided for context. Findings show that there are critical differences in the immigration experience of Muslims and Non-Muslims and that language use is the primary means of identity negotiation. Additionally, standards and expectations relating to sexual activity, religious practices and social behavior are the definitive topics for clash or cultural pluralism. Analysis suggests that the existence of common Mediterranean values could form the basis of pluralism in Milan. Cultural clash in the communities studied could derive from a crisis of Italian identity as a result of changing demographics (European integration, low fertility rates, aging population, and high rates of immigration) and differences in norms of behavior

  • Post-Exotic Pornography Or What´S Color Got to Do With
Post-Exotic Pornography or What´s Color Got To Do With It? On the Problematics of Representation in Ethnic Pornography and a few Interventions by Queer_Feminists of Color. Whatever ones positon on porn is: One has to realize, that since the developments of the last years, queers and feminists can look at pornography at least a little bit different. Even though the power of mainstream pornography has been continuing and the multiple alternatives posed by genres like queer porn, feminist porn, alt porn and postporn obviously don´t have the influence to pose a real threat to the majoritarian structures of the industry, people with queer desires, bodies and fetishes have entered the frame now since quite some time. In the year 1990, Annie Sprinkle, under guidance of her lover Wink von Kempen, did stage the piece „Post Porn Modernist“. Instead of arousing the audience with a repetition of intensified affects, overstyled bodies and objectified women, „Post Porn Modernist“ was able to deconstruct the clichés of mainstream pornography including its various stereotypes and overcome the normative dimension of sexuality for a vision that included critique and irony, distanciation and transformation. Like other performance artists before her, Sprinkle used the personal narrative and forms of storytelling as a central ingredient for her piece. But what she provided was not only a herstory of her own life, which can be described as a rollercoaster-ride through all possible variations of sexwork, but also a genealogy of the porn genre itself. When Sprinkle became older she didn´t just end her career, like many colleagues before her.

Kristalina Georgieva, our speaker this afternoon, has an important title at an important institution. She is the European Commission's Vice President for Budget and Human Resources. She has given me permission to veer a little bit from what that set of phrases means. The last phrase, human resources, has taken on a different and very much in a minor key meaning in today's world, in today's Europe. She and her fellow European leaders are dealing with a crisis in the human resources of two regions of the world. That is the massive wave of refugees escaping from the Middle East in hopes of finding safety in Europe. No doubt, she will address that issue in her remarks. Her experience and credentials make her a particularly timely person to be talking to us on that set of issues.

FREE THE ORIGINS OF THE WORLDS MYTHOLOGIES PDF Wales Professor of Sanskrit Michael Witzel,Wales Professor of Sanskrit E J Michael Witzel | 688 pages | 14 Mar 2013 | Oxford University Press Inc | 9780199812851 | English | New York, United States Review of Witzel - The Origins of the World's Mythologies () | Fred Smith - An origin myth is a myth that purports to describe the origin of some feature of the natural or social world. One type of origin myth is the cosmogonic mythwhich describes the creation of the world. However, many cultures have stories set after the cosmogonic mythwhich describe the origin of natural phenomena and human institutions within a preexisting universe. Every origin myth is a tale of creation: origin myths describe how some reality came into existence. The distinction between cosmogonic myths and origin myths is not clear-cut. A myth about the origin of some part of the world necessarily presupposes the existence of the world—which, for many cultures, presupposes a cosmogonic myth. In this sense, one can think of origin myths as building upon and extending their cultures' cosmogonic myths. In some academic circles, the term "myth" properly refers only to origin and cosmogonic myths. For example, many folklorists reserve the label "myth" for stories about creation. Traditional stories that do The Origins of the Worlds Mythologies focus on origins fall into the categories of " legend " and " folk tale ", which folklorists distinguish from myth. According to historian Mircea Eliadefor many traditional cultures, nearly every sacred story qualifies as an origin myth. Traditional humans tend to model their behavior after sacred events, seeing their life as an " eternal return " to the mythical age.

  • Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity in Contemporary France
Immigration and Sexual Citizenship: Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity in Contemporary France Mehammed Amadeus Mack Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Mehammed Amadeus Mack All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dissertation Title: “Immigration and Sexual Citizenship: Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity in Contemporary France” Mehammed Amadeus Mack This dissertation considers discourses bearing on the social dynamics of immigration and postcolonial diversity in contemporary France in light of their interconnections with issues of sexuality and assimilation. Synthesizing and building on recent work by anthropologists, sociologists and cultural theorists it explores the current debate over French identity--a debate that has to a considerable extent revolved around the impact of recent postwar immigration to France and the "integration" of immigrants on the cultural level, and of which a recent symptom has been the Sarkozy government's launch of a public national debate about "l'identité nationale" (national identity). Overall, my project focuses on the intermingling of the cultural and the political in cultural representations of immigrants and their descendants. Specifically, I consider the highly charged terrain of the representation of sexuality. In the discourse on laïcité (secularism) and integration, gender norms and tolerance of homosexuality have emerged as key components and are now often employed to highlight immigrants' "un-French" attitudes. I argue that, as French and immigrant identities have been called into question, sexuality has constituted a favored prism through which to establish the existence of difference. Through the study of cultural representations of immigration, I will explain how the potential of immigrants and their descendants to assimilate is often judged according to the "fitness" of their attitudes about sexuality.
