Maddalena Tirabassi 6 Saggi From William C. Celentano to Barack Obama: Ethnic and Racial Identity in Italian-American Postwar Political Experience, 1945-2008 Stefano Luconi Università degli Studi di Roma «Tor Vergata» According to conventional wisdom, political science has generally overlooked an in-depth examination of Italian-American voting behavior and politics (Martellone, 1991; Cappelli, 2008). This contention, however, hardly depicts the state of the art in the 1960s. After the number of Italian-Americans serv- ing in the U.S. House of Representatives and state legislatures in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island had roughly doubled during the previous decade, this ethnic minority seemed a ris- ing political group and consequently captured scholarly attention (Lubell, 1965, pp. 76-77). In particular, in the 1960s academicians drew upon the electoral history and events involving the Little Italy in the city of New Haven, Con- necticut, as a microcosm for case studies to analyze ethnic politics. Specifically, at the beginning of that decade, in a path-breaking research on the mechanics of municipal politics, Who Governs?, Robert A. Dahl (1961) used the example of Italian-American William C. Celentano’s 1945 rise to the mayoralty in New Haven in order to elaborate an influential three-stage theory for the political assimilation of immigrant groups in the United States. The local Republican organization slated Celentano, an undertaker by pro- fession, to lure his fellow ethnics into breaking away from the Irish-dominated Democratic Party. Defeated in 1939 and bypassed in the choice of candidates for the duration of World War II because his Italian descent made him a liability while his ancestral country was fighting against the United States, Celentano received again the Republican nomination in 1945 and, this time, managed to 7 Altreitalie gennaio-dicembre 2009 win election to City Hall. He served for eight years until he lost to Richard C. Lee in an unsuccessful 1953 bid for a fifth consecutive two-year term (Domhoff, 1978, pp. 86-90; Rae, 2003, pp. 83, 227-28, 292-302, 305-8, 326, 407-11). In Dahl’s view, Celentano’s experience was the epitome of the timing and mechanics for the accommodation not only of Italian-Americans but also of ethnic groups in general within U.S. politics. According to Who Governs?, while the great bulk of their own members are still in the working-class ranks, minorities rely on political brokers who belong to previously integrated groups – such as the Irish for New Haven’s Italian-Americans – and receive nominations only for lesser public offices that are mainly confined to the representation of the wards or districts where the single ethnic communities reside. Then, as the minorities become more heterogeneous in terms of economic and social

  • Testimony of Richard Vetere, Adjunct Assistant Professor Queens College Before the Board of Trustees at Queens Public Hearing
1 Testimony of Richard Vetere, Adjunct Assistant Professor Queens College Before the Board of Trustees at Queens Public Hearing April 19, 2017 I have taught one class at Queens College since 1983. That was the year, Vigilante, a film I wrote, was released. Since then I have become successful enough that I was named a lifetime member of the Writers Guild of America East and was elected to Council for a two-year term in 2012. I have worked with film producers who have either produced, starred in or directed my work, and that list includes Francis Ford Coppola, Ed Harris, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, Jason Alexander, Agnieszka Holland and George Clooney, to name a few. I have written scripts for Paramount, Universal, ABC, CBS, and Disney, and yet what gives me the most satisfaction is helping students who come to Queens College from all over the world to learn how to write movies. And I’m treated like a seasonal worker by the Board of Trusties at CUNY. I’m hired semester-by-semester, and my pay, though I’ve been teaching nearly non-stop since 1983, is abysmal. I do not believe I’m appreciated by this educational system. However, I haven’t complained because, as I stated, I love teaching at Queens. Yet now is the time to give me equal pay for all I have contributed to Queens College, and pay all those others who work as hard as me to educate the young minds who come to our classrooms hopeful that what they learn will give them the opportunity to change their lives.

  • Post-Exotic Pornography Or What´S Color Got to Do With
Post-Exotic Pornography or What´s Color Got To Do With It? On the Problematics of Representation in Ethnic Pornography and a few Interventions by Queer_Feminists of Color. Whatever ones positon on porn is: One has to realize, that since the developments of the last years, queers and feminists can look at pornography at least a little bit different. Even though the power of mainstream pornography has been continuing and the multiple alternatives posed by genres like queer porn, feminist porn, alt porn and postporn obviously don´t have the influence to pose a real threat to the majoritarian structures of the industry, people with queer desires, bodies and fetishes have entered the frame now since quite some time. In the year 1990, Annie Sprinkle, under guidance of her lover Wink von Kempen, did stage the piece „Post Porn Modernist“. Instead of arousing the audience with a repetition of intensified affects, overstyled bodies and objectified women, „Post Porn Modernist“ was able to deconstruct the clichés of mainstream pornography including its various stereotypes and overcome the normative dimension of sexuality for a vision that included critique and irony, distanciation and transformation. Like other performance artists before her, Sprinkle used the personal narrative and forms of storytelling as a central ingredient for her piece. But what she provided was not only a herstory of her own life, which can be described as a rollercoaster-ride through all possible variations of sexwork, but also a genealogy of the porn genre itself. When Sprinkle became older she didn´t just end her career, like many colleagues before her.
