En el predio elegido estaba instalado desde principios de siglo XX el café y confitería La Giralda –donde se había estrenado en 1917 el célebre tango “La Cumparsita”, compuesto por Gerardo Matos Rodríguez–, que fue de- molido para levantar el nuevo edificio. Se llamó a un concurso internacional de proyectos, al que se presentaron diecisiete arquitectos de distintas partes del mundo. Entre ellos se encon- traba Mario Palanti –nacido en Milán–, quien contaba entre sus obras rea- lizadas la del Palacio Barolo, edificio de gran similitud con el Salvo, ubicado en la Avenida de Mayo, en Buenos Aires. Considerando ese antecedente, Palanti finalmente fue el elegido, meses después de haber sido declarado desierto el concurso.

Como atractivo turístico de la ciudad, los mercados de productos son poco difundidos. Abordamos la historia, crecimiento y desarrollo hasta la actualidad de los Mercados de Productos. Durante sus comienzos se comercializaba en plazas y el traslado de productos ocurría en carretas y caballos.

    CULTURALES EL PALACIO SALVO: ARQUETIPO MONTEVIDEANO *Alejandro Michelena Es único por su estilo, dimensión y peripecia. Sin embargo muy cerca, en Buenos Aires, se alza un hermano menor en tamaño aunque mayor en edad: el Palacio Barolo de Avenida de Mayo, con una torre parecida aunque más chica. Ambos edificios pertenecen al mismo arquitecto, el italiano Mario Palanti, un hombre que volcó toda su capacidad de imaginación en estas obras, y que luego retornaría a su país para integrarse al equipo oficial de arquitectos al servicio de Mussolini. El edificio montevideano –que ya superó los ochenta años, cumplidos con gran pompa en el 2008- fue hecho construir por los hermanos Lorenzo, José y Ángel Salvo. Fue el homenaje a la ciudad de estos acaudalados hijos de inmigrantes itálicos. Para realizarlo hubo que demoler un recinto que –a comienzos de los años veinte– era ya legendario: la vieja confitería La Giralda. Y para imprimirle más solemnidad al emprendimiento, se llevó a cabo un concurso de proyectos arquitectónicos, pero luego –misteriosamente– el contratado fue Palanti. Las obras se extendieron entre 1923 y 1928, cuando quedó oficialmente inaugurado. Se utilizaron mármoles y granitos nacionales y alemanes, así como roble floreado de Eslovenia en toda la carpintería. Su estructura es de hormigón armado, detalle que le iba a otorgar –durante algunos años– el cetro de edificio más alto del mundo basado en ese material (los rascacielos de Nueva York y de Chicago se hacían con armazón de hierro). El resultado es una mole que oscila –en lo estilístico– entre las referencias renacentistas y las reminiscencias góticas, con algunos toques neoclásicos.
