  • Veronika Vitaitė: Discoveries in Pianism
Veronika Vitaitė: Discoveries in Pianism Summary The book is devoted to the analysis of the performance skills, pedagog- ical and organisational activities of Veronika Vitaitė, a prominent cur- rent piano pedagogue, pianist, promoter of Lithuanian piano culture. Manifestations of the Professor’s personality in different fields of musi- cal activity, the universality of her works influenced the development of Lithuanian piano culture of the past decades: performance skills, a close relationship with Lithuanian composers encouraged the creation of piano duet, inspired the premiers of works of different genres; zeal- ous work, preparation of her students for international competitions yielded several generations of young pianists; intense organisational activities, long-time leadership of the Piano Department of the Lithua- nian Academy of Music and Theatre, constant supervision and care of training of young pianists of the Republic laid strong foundations for a further development of piano excellence. Thus far Veronika Vitaitė’s intense and multi-faceted activities have not been thoroughly discussed and properly assessed. Whereby the present monograph it is sought to fill the existing gap. In preparing the book, the following works by Lithuanian researchers were used: col- lections of articles compiled by Kęstutis Grybauskas (1984), Veronika Vitaitė (1993), studies of the development of the art of piano by Mariam Azizbekova (1991, 1998, 1999), Liucija Drąsutienė (1996, 2004, 2015), Eugenijus Ignatonis (1997, 2003, 2010), Rita Aleknaitė-Bieliauskienė (2003, 2014, 2017), Ramunė Kryžauskienė (2004, 2007), scientific in- sights of Leonidas Melnikas (2006, 2007), Lina Navickaitė-Martinelli (2013). To discuss Veronika Vitaitė’s artistic activities, we drew on the reviews of her concerts, and to analyse general principles of her teach- ing methods, reminiscences of her former students and a questionnaire survey were used, lessons of the experienced pedagogue, as well as workshops and master classes that she conducted were attended.

  • Stockhausen's Cosmic Pulses
Robin Maconie: Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses 2009–14 (copyright) 1 Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses ROBIN MACONIE Some people chase tornados; others go after black holes. From the late 1950s Stockhausen was fascinated by the idea of sounds in rotation and how to realise them in a technical sense, by means of an array of loudspeakers. Completed in 2007, Cosmic Pulses is Stockhausen’s final electronic composition.1 For a number of reasons I believe the composer knew it would be his last. The work was completed in a rush. In many ways, notably in terms of the sound material, which is very basic, it remains a sketch. The music can be described as a massive rotating sound mass, composed in 24 separately spinning frequency layers. The work thickens gradually to 24 layers, then reduces symmetrically upward in an ascending spiral that ends quite abruptly. An audience may experience the sensation of falling headlong into a black hole, or, if one is an optimist, of being carried aloft on the whirlwind like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. A tornado is an effect of a natural imbalance between temperature layers in the atmosphere, tipped into motion by the earth’s rotation, which moves progressively faster toward the equator. The rotating air mass that results spirals upwards and generates a powerful electrical charge. A black hole by comparison is an effect of gravitation creating an imbalance in spacetime. The rotational process that results spirals downward or inward and leads to the extinction of reality as we know it, or again, if one is an optimist, creates a wormhole leading either into another universe, or into our own universe at Robin Maconie: Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses 2009–14 (copyright) 2 another point in time.

  • Pace Final 26.11.15
Positions, Methodologies and Aesthetics in the Published Discourse about Brian Ferneyhough: A Critical Study Ian Pace1 Since Brian Ferneyhough achieved a degree of public recognition following the premiere of his Transit (1972-75) in March 1975 at the Royan Festival, a range of writings on and reviews of his work have appeared on a relatively regular basis. The nature, scope, style, and associated methodologies of these have expanded or changed quite considerably over the course of Ferneyhough's career––in part in line with changes in the music and its realization in performance––but nonetheless one can discern common features and wider boundaries. In this article, I will present a critical analysis of the large body of scholarly or extended journalistic reception of Ferneyhough's work, identifying key thematic concerns in such writing, and contextualizing it within wider discourses concerning new music. Several key methodological issues will be considered, in particular relating to intentionality and sketch study, from which I will draw a variety of conclusions that apply not only to Ferneyhough, but to wider contemporary musical study as well. Early Writings on Ferneyhough The first extended piece of writing about Ferneyhough's work was an early 1973 article by Elke Schaaf2 (who would become Ferneyhough's second wife),3 which deals with Epicycle (1968), Missa Brevis (1969), Cassandra's Dream Song (1970), Sieben Sterne (1970), Firecyle Beta (1969-71), and the then not-yet-complete Transit. Schaaf’s piece already exhibits one of the most

Since the festival’s first edition in 2002, TIMF has been striving to assemble highly qualified musicians in order to build its own ensemble. In 2011, then Alexander Liebreich initiated a collaboration of musicians from Ensemble TIMF with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, thus for the first time building a truly international Festival Orchestra. From then on, the group was assembled annually, performing at home and abroad. At the opening of the new Tongyeong Concert Hall in 2014, TFO was again led by Alexander Liebreich and included musicians from Ensemble TIMF, Polish National Radio Orchestra of Katowice, and from major international symphony orchestras, such as NDR Hamburg, Munich Philharmonic, Kremerata Baltica, Osaka Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, TFO truly became a musical centerpiece of the Tongyeong International Music Festival. Following the festival theme „Voyages“, the orchestra went abroad to play in Japan and China. Performing together with violinist Gidon Kremer and German conductor Christoph Poppen, the orchestra consisted of musicians mainly from Korea, Japan and China to create a musical bridge between the three countries.

  • Serial Music and Other New Trends in Western Art Music of the 20Th Century
Serial Music and other new trends in Western Art Music of the 20th century In the 20th Century composers of Western Art Music experimented in the same way that artists did. The result was that things like melody, pitch, rhythm and time were used very differently to make up music. Whole tone music, atonal music, bitonal music, microtonal music, serial music and minimalist music were some of the different types of new music that were a result of this experimentation. Minimalist music is discussed on a separate page. Atonal music and Bitonal music Atonal music is music where the composer has experimented with pitch and melody to the point where there is no home note in the music. Bitonal music is when the composer uses 2 different key signatures (ie 2 different home notes), in two different parts, at the same time. Whole tone music Whole tone music is based on the whole tone scale. This is a scale made up of whole tones only, eg. C D E F# G# A# C. Melodies built on the whole tone scale sound hazy or misty. The chords (harmonies) built on the whole tone scale are also unconventional and colourful (different) sounding. A composer who used the whole tone scale quite a lot was Debussy. He is also known for being influenced by Indonesian Gamelan music (see the page on Minimalism for an explanation of Gamelan). Debussy’s use of pedal points (like a drone – the same note is held or continually repeated while other parts change) and ostinato give his music the ‘cyclical’ feeling created by repetition in Gamelan music.

  • John Cage's Entanglement with the Ideas Of
JOHN CAGE’S ENTANGLEMENT WITH THE IDEAS OF COOMARASWAMY Edward James Crooks PhD University of York Music July 2011 John Cage’s Entanglement with the Ideas of Coomaraswamy by Edward Crooks Abstract The American composer John Cage was famous for the expansiveness of his thought. In particular, his borrowings from ‘Oriental philosophy’ have directed the critical and popular reception of his works. But what is the reality of such claims? In the twenty years since his death, Cage scholars have started to discover the significant gap between Cage’s presentation of theories he claimed he borrowed from India, China, and Japan, and the presentation of the same theories in the sources he referenced. The present study delves into the circumstances and contexts of Cage’s Asian influences, specifically as related to Cage’s borrowings from the British-Ceylonese art historian and metaphysician Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. In addition, Cage’s friendship with the Jungian mythologist Joseph Campbell is detailed, as are Cage’s borrowings from the theories of Jung. Particular attention is paid to the conservative ideology integral to the theories of all three thinkers. After a new analysis of the life and work of Coomaraswamy, the investigation focuses on the metaphysics of Coomaraswamy’s philosophy of art. The phrase ‘art is the imitation of nature in her manner of operation’ opens the doors to a wide- ranging exploration of the mimesis of intelligible and sensible forms. Comparing Coomaraswamy’s ‘Traditional’ idealism to Cage’s radical epistemological realism demonstrates the extent of the lack of congruity between the two thinkers. In a second chapter on Coomaraswamy, the extent of the differences between Cage and Coomaraswamy are revealed through investigating their differing approaches to rasa , the Renaissance, tradition, ‘art and life’, and museums.

Incantations Concerto da Camera for Piano and Ensemble (2015) The balance of traditional and progressive musical parameters through the concertante treatment of the piano Analytical Commentary Graham Waterhouse A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Birmingham City University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2018 The Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, Birmingham City University (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) Abstract The aim of this research project is to investigate concertante techniques in composition with reference both to traditional models and recent works in the genre, and to redefine a contemporary understanding of concertante writing in preparation for the principal work of this thesis, Incantations for Piano and Ensemble. Starting with the contradictory meanings of the word “concertare” (to compete and to unite), as well as with a fleeting, non-musical vision of combining disparate elements, I investigate diverse styles and means of combining soloist (mainly piano) and ensemble. My aim is to expand my compositional “vocabulary”, in order to meet the demands of writing a work for piano and ensemble. This involved composing supporting works, both of concerto-like nature (with more clearly defined functions of soloist and tutti), as well as chamber music (with material equally divided between the players). Part of the research was to ascertain to what extent these two apparent opposites could be combined to create a hybrid concerto/chamber music genre in which the element of virtuosity transcends the purely bravura, to embrace a common adaptability, where soloist and ensemble players are called upon to assume a variety of roles, from the accompanimental to the soloistic.
