Wasscherb aLingedijk 104, Tricht, the Netherlands; bMinstraat 15bis, Utrecht, the Netherlands (Received 3 March 2017; final version received 10 May 2017) In the nineteenth century Edmond de Selys Longchamps added watercolours, drawings and notes to his extensive collection of dragonfly and damselfly specimens. The majority of illustrations were exe- cuted by Selys and Guillaume Severin. The watercolour collection is currently part of the collection of the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences in Brussels. This previously unpublished material has now been scanned and is accessible on the website of this institute. This article presents the part of the collection concerning the following sous-familles according to Selys: Calopterygines (currently superfamilies Calopterygoidea and Epiophlebioidea), Cordulines (currently superfamily Libelluloidea), Gomphines (currently superfamily Petaluroidea, Gomphoidea, Cordulegastroidea and Aeshnoidea) and Aeschnines (currently superfamily Aeshnoidea). This part consists of 750 watercolours, 64 drawings and 285 text sheets. Characteristics and subject matter of the sheets with illustrations and text are pre- sented. The majority (92%) of all sheets with illustrations have been associated with current species names (Calopteryines 268, Cordulines 109, Gomphines 268 and Aeschnines 111). We hope the digital images and documentation stress the value of the watercolour collection of Selys and promote it as a source for odonate research. The genetic distance of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene in R. taiwana and related species ranges from 4.2% to 10.4%. R. taiwana is shown to be a good species based on morphological and genetic criteria. It also is clearly retrieved as a distinct species based on COI phylogenetic analysis. The R. drusilla group is proposed and defined by a combination of characteristics which distinguish them from all other Rhinocypha species: male abdomen with reddish orange markings and S2 with a unique dorsal spade-shaped or similar marking. A key to the males of the six species of the R. drusilla group is provided. Two morphologically distinct continental species, R. drusilla and R. arguta, are shown to have a rather small genetic distance, only 1.2– 1.7%. More material from the continental populations of this group is needed for further morphological and molecular studies. This is the first species of Hydrophylita to be described from the Old World, and the first record of phoresy in the genus. Adult females were observed aggregating at the base of the female damselfly’s abdomen. The Type Specimens of the Odonata in the Entomological Institute, Hokkaido University
THE TYPE SPECIMENS OF THE ODONATA IN THE ENTOMOLOGICAL INSTITUTE, HOKKAIDO UNIVERSITY S y o z ir o A s a h in a Totsuka, III-123, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo The collection of the Odonata in the Entomological Institute of Hokkaido University is the most important base for the study of this group of insects of this country. It is the historical material of our pioneer entomologists, Dr. Shonen Matsumura and Dr. Kan Oguma, and contains the type specimens of no less than fourty species of the Far Eastern Odonata described by these authors. In 1935 I had the opportunity to study the collection in some detail, and was enabled to check nearly all the label-records of these specimens. On that occasion I found so many of the type-specimens without any exact type labels. Just before the War II most of the dragonfly specimens including many types were brought to Tokyo by T. Okumura and Y. Sugihara, and most unfortunately, while preserved in Okumura’s residence in Tokyo, the specimens have suffered considerable damage and a number of them have gone astray. During past few years an attempt to enlist the biological type-specimens preserved in Japan was made by the Subcommittee for Scientific Objects, Science Encouragement Council, Minister of Education. On that occasion I found that, as stated above, the collection in question has suffered unfavourable influence. Recently under the suggestion of Prof. Toichi Uchida and Prof. Chihisa Watanabe of Hokkaido University I have had the opportunity to rearrange the specimens in proper position. In the course of this work I have been strongly impressed the necessity to select and designate the lectotypes from the remaining specimens. -
