“Dear Friends of Union University Athletics

Thank you so much for your support of Union University athletics. A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Tommy Sadler began working at Union in 1985, but started his time as the Director of Athletics in 2009. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years.

Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis.

His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics. Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994.

Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his eighth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president.

“Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Tommy Sadler Director of Athletics Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson. 1050 Union University Drive Jackson, TN 38305 Phone: 731-661-5218 Email: [email protected]

http://www.uu.edu/athletics/msoccer/soccer11/stats/sSched_1.html 9/21/2012 UNION UNIVERSITY Gulf South Conference GSC HISTORY Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South GSC COMMISSIONERS Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its Nate Salant (1992-Present) 43rd year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. Sonny Moran (1987-1992) Ralph McFillen (1984-1987) In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting Hayden Riley (1982-1984) ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run Jim McCullough (1979-1982) by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the Stan Galloway (1971-1979) league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & GSC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - 1971-2012 (46) women’s golf, softball and baseball) so bitterly contested in a collegial manner. BASEBALL (6) West Florida (2011) From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back Delta State (2004) to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team Troy State (1986, 87) championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. Jacksonville State (1990, 91) No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in MEN’S BASKETBALL (3) 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included North Alabama (1979, 91) nine football games (now 10) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to Jacksonville State (1985) that the newly branded of “GSC DigiNet” video platform and the broadbanding of most of its championships and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (7) century. Delta State (1975, 76, 77, 89, 90, 92) Southeastern Louisiana (1977*) The GSC takes pride in their 46 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC FOOTBALL (10) student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. Three GSC teams advanced to NCAA Delta State (2000) Title contests in 2011-12, led by Valdosta State which claimed the league’s first-ever Softball North Alabama (1993, ‘94, ‘95) Crown. Valdosta State (2004, ‘07) West Alabama (1971) Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Jacksonville State (1992) Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter GSC members. Scheduling Troy State (1984, ‘87) problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the MEN’S GOLF (5) membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Troy State (1976, ‘77, ‘84) Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College West Florida (2001, ‘08) and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. WOMEN’S GOLF (3) Troy State (1984, ‘86, ‘89) The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS (2) Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under Jacksonville State (1984, ‘85) the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi HOCKEY (2) University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Alabama-Huntsville (1996, ‘98) Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was WOMEN’S SOCCER (1) replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC Christian Brothers (2002) welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the SOFTBALL (1) 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in Valdosta State (2012) 2006-07 when Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference, then 14 after Montevallo departed to the Peach Belt Conference. MEN’S TENNIS (4) Valdosta State (2006, ‘11) The GSC dropped divisional play after the 2010-11 season when its six Arkansas members West Florida (2004, ‘05) broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The Conference did not wait long to implement an aggressive expansion plan, sponsoring the Division II applications of Union TRACK (1) University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which were accepted into the NCAA reclassifying Southeastern Louisiana (1975) process in July of 2011, and will enter as GSC provisional members in the 2012-13 season. The GSC took another step in bolstering its membership this summer, backing the Division WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL (1) II application of Lee University (TN) which was accepted by the NCAA in July of 2012. The North Alabama (2003) league also bolstered its football membership when it agreed to add Florida Tech as a football-only member beginning in 2013. Current members in BOLD; *--Small College Division Champion Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992.
