Mai 2020 in Altenberg _________________________________________________________________________________ Nachruf Johann Haas Historische Formel Vau Europa e.V. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Da Haasi: Ein leidenschaftlicher Schrauber „Ein leidenschaftlicher Schrauber“, so überschrieben die oberösterreichischen Nachrichten den Nachruf für Johann Haas. „So lange ich zurückdenken kann, hatten wir Motorräder in unserer Garage stehen“, sagt Dominik Haas in dem Beitrag über unseren völlig unerwartet verstorbenen Clubfreund. Seinen Vater Johann Haas hat er als leidenschaftlichen und begnadeten Schrauber erlebt. „Da Haasi“, wie ihn seine Freunde nennen durften, beschäftigte sich mit Zweirädern wie Honda Monkey, Horex Regina oder BMW. Seine große Leidenschaft galt zudem den historischen Monoposto- Rennfahrzeugen. „Hans hatte eine irrsinnige Freude daran, aus einen Schrotthaufen wieder ein Fahrzeug zu machen“, so Freund Rudi Raml. Hans wurde als eines von acht Geschwister am 27. August 1955 in Altenberg bei Linz geboren. Die Schule besuchte er in seinem Heimatort, die anschließende Schlosserlehre absolvierte er in der Voest/Alpine. Er wurde dann Servicetechniker für Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen. Sein Chef erkannte sein Verkaufstalent und beförderte ihn zum Gebietsverkäufer - das Vertrauen wurde mit herausragenden Verkaufserfolgen belohnt und Hans fand seine berufliche Leidenschaft als Handelsreisender für Tischlereimaschinen. Hans wollte – natürlich! – wie viele andere junge Österreicher, Rindt und Lauda folgen und Rennfahrer werden. 1976/1977 wurde ein 2CV für Crossrennen aufgebaut und eingesetzt. Hans ließ immer wieder mit schnellen Zeiten aufhorchen. Das erinnert Freund und Clubmitglied Rudi Raml. 1986 lernte Hans in der Linzer Altstadt Cornelia, seine Conny kennen. Nach 20-jähriger Prüfung wurde geheiratet, 1989 wurde Sohn Dominik und 1994 Tochter Julia geboren. 1995 zog die junge Familie aus Linz nach Altenberg zurück in ihr selbstgebautes Haus. Ende der 1990er Jahre fuhr Hans Motorradrennen - auch hier kannte er jeden im Fahrerlager und jeder ihn. 2005 musste dann ein einsitziges Rennauto her, „am besten in Zigarrenform“. Irgendwie bekam er Kenntnis davon, dass Frank Böhr seinen schnellen Austro Vau hergeben würde. Rudi und Hans fuhren zum Salzburgring, nahmen Kontakt mit Frank auf, der dort das Auto einsetzte – und wenige Wochen später wurde der Austro Vau in Düren geholt. Zusammen mit Rudi Raml und Alfred „Fredi“ Ecker war Haasi das Formel-Historic-Team. Von Formel Vau bis Formel 1 deckte das Team das ganze Formel-Spektrum ab. Die drei Oberösterreicher waren lange Jahre regelmäßige Starter in der Historischen Formel Vau Europa. _________________________________________________________________________________2 Nachruf Johann Haas Historische Formel Vau Europa e.V. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fredi Ecker, Hans Haas, Rudi Raml Später kam dann noch der Van Diemen RF 83 dazu, den Roland Ratzenberger bei Gätmo 1983 gefahren ist – sowie der Formel Atlantik mit dem Lotus-Monocoque. Beide wurden fahrbereit erworben, waren aber weit von dem entfernt, was Haasi unter einsatzbereit verstand. Unter Mithilfe von Freund Hermann Stadler wurden die Autos in den Zustand versetzt, der seinen Ansprüchen gerecht wurde. Hans war viele Jahre lang in der Historischen Formel Vau Europa aktiv, die er sehr schätzte. Er genoss die Atmosphäre an der Strecke und das Geschehen auf der Strecke mit großem Respekt und mitnehmender Freundschaft zu den Menschen, mit denen er gemeinsam Formel Vau machte. Sobald das Gespann ins Fahrerlager gerollt war, wurde der Anhänger seitlich geöffnet, die Treppe ausgeklappt, Tisch und Bank hergerichtet. Und dann eine fein gebügelte, edle Tischdecke ausgebreitet und mit einer Vase mit Blumen bestückt. Danach dann die herzliche Begrüßung der Anwesenden. Erst danach wurde mit dem Ausladen und Vorbereiten seines gelbgrünen Austro Vau begonnen. In so manchem Zweikampf – gerne auch mit Markenkollegen - war er kompromisslos, aber fair. Nach solchen Sessions gings dann bei einer guten Jause an den fein gedeckten Tisch. Mit Geschichten, Späßen und Scherzen, die er immer parat hatte, wurde beim Übergang in den gemütlichen Teil eines Renntages nicht gespart. Sein freundschaftliches Verhalten und seine bezogene Geselligkeit, gepaart mit dem ihm eigenen Humor, machten solche Abende zu freudigen und immer spaßigen Erlebnissen. Seine stilvollen Auftritte im Fahrerlager und bei den Jahreshauptversammlungen dokumentieren seine Lebensfreude und Originalität. Da Haasi im Admiralsjacket bei der Jahreshauptversammlung und beim stilvollen Catering mit Robert Waschak In den vergangenen Jahren war Hans eher selten in der Formel Vau dabei, die Arbeit in der Holzmaschinenindustrie, die er mit Leidenschaft erfüllte und liebte, forderte ihren Anteil an seiner Zeit. Außerhalb der Formel Vau war Haasi eng mit der Familie Ratzenberger verbunden. Im vergangenen Jahr präsentierte er beim Minardi-Day in Imola am 01. Mai den Formel Ford 1600 von Roland Ratzenberger – zu dessen und Ayrton Sennas 25.stem Todestag. „Ratzenbergs Vater war da, ein wirklich berührendes Treffen", erzählt Rudi. „Es hat ihm große Freude bereitet, seinen Ratzenberger Van Diemen RF 83 zu präsentieren.“ Rolands Vater war sehr von Haasi angetan, weil er so viel von Roland und seine Karriere wusste - Haasi wäre zu den Ratzenbergers nach Salzburg eingeladen gewesen. _________________________________________________________________________________5 Nachruf Johann Haas Historische Formel Vau Europa e.V. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hans im Gätmo Van Diemen von Roland Ratzenberger Da Haasi beim 25-jährigen Gedenktag an Roland Ratzenberger und Ayrton Senna am 1. Hans wird uns und der Historischen Formel Vau Europa sehr fehlen – mit all seiner Herzlichkeit und Leidenschaft, seiner Verlässlichkeit, seinem Sportsgeist und mit seiner herausragenden Hilfsbereitschaft, die er erst dann aufgab, wenn die Hilfe auch gewirkt hatte. Es fehlt uns sein einzigartiger Stil und seine enge Verbunden- und Bezogenheit: Kein Weihnachten ohne Karte aus Altenberg und keine Begegnung ohne den mitgebrachten Veltliner für Astrid. Wir werden Hans nicht vergessen und ihm dort ein dauerndes Andenken bewahren, wo wir immer gerne gemeinsam waren: auf den Rennstrecken. Und in unseren Herzen. Servus Haasi. Mosley had the connections that meant racing teams from all over the gloBe were interested in using their research technologies, But while keeping the clients satisfied, Simtek Began designing an F1 car for BMW in secret.

    Days that Shook the F1 World (Part 2) – Death of Ayrton Senna Welcome to the second episode of Sidepodcast’s latest series – Days That Shook The F1 World. Yesterday we looked at the US Grand Prix in 2005, and today we’ll focus on another earth-shattering day in F1 History. This time it’s May 1st 1994. Formula 1 is synonymous with the warning: “Motorsport is dangerous.” And it is, although it used to be a lot worse. Sir Jackie Stewart’s autobiography talks about a period in his racing career where he lost over 50 friends and colleagues in ten years. In the 50s and 60s, a serious crash in racing meant terrible injuries or death. And the trend continued until 1994 when the death of Ayrton Senna put F1 safety on the front page. Senna was a legend, a hero, a proper champion. He didn’t always do things by the book, but he was one of life’s good guys. He took the usual route to F1, through karting and Formula 3, then dominated Formula 1 for the ten years he participated. With many wins and three championships already under his belt, Senna started the 1994 season badly. He’d recently made the switch to Williams but the Renault powered car was a bit of a handful and he retired for the first couple of races of the season. Arriving for the third race at Imola, Senna was hoping for some good luck. On Friday, Rubens Barrichello was seriously injured and hospitalised, preventing him from completing the race weekend.

So far, the development of the Formula 1 World Championships has been pretty much about the cars, with a few squabbles between drivers along the way. The 1990s saw some real star talent emerging, with personalities both loveable and not so much. The 1990s were a year of change, innovation, tragedy and triumph. Team Williams introduced the first car, designed by Patrick Head, to have a semi‐automatic gearbox and traction control, but reliability was still a major problem. Eventually, Williams managed to conquer their mechanical troubles, and added more computer‐control to the car, leading to success in the next couple of years. Williams took the championship in '92 and '93, with Nigel Mansell and then Alain Prost, who had just returned from a season off. Michael Schumacher joined the Formula 1 circuit in 1991, qualifying 7th on his debut for Team Jordan, although he didn’t get past the first lap. Just one race later, he defected to Benetton. With the major players of previous seasons now retired, Schumacher was the main rival for Ayrton Senna, but it was not going to be easy. The points system changed in 1990 so that all Formula 1 races were included in the championship and a win would gain you 10 points rather than 9 points. The FIA also declared that the driver aids, such as traction control, were having a negative impact on the impression of F1. Where was the driver skill? So, the aids were banned, despite Formula 1 getting more and more exciting.

Only four of a number of high- profile race car drivers to have lost their lives taking part in events at the highest levels of motorsport. The aim of the present study is to analyze the coverage of death in high-level motorsport in the printed sports news of La Presse and The Toronto Star in Canada for the 1982 to 2017 period inclusively. Mobilizing the existing literature on risk-taking, namely Lyng’s concept of edgework, as well as Hall’s work on representation, a thematic analysis of a sample of sports news articles (N=488) was conducted. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. The discussion surrounding motorsport fatalities revolved around the individual (the deceased driver), the social aspect of the death (primarily the family members left behind), and journalistic practices (how to cover death). In conclusion, the coverage of death in motorsport was found to be an instance where the athlete is heroized and sometimes revered even decades after their death. In this aspect, the figure of Gilles Villeneuve remains pivotal to motorsport discussions in Canada, even to this day. It also was found that sports journalists, through their coverage of deadly accidents, enact the traditional roles of the journalist in offering social criticism of their subject matter to their readers, and that motorsport drivers enact a highly specific type of masculinity when practicing their sport.

Ayrton Senna 2 Preface I never met Ayrton Senna but I was a fan. Since his untimely death on May 1, 1994 at Imola, every book imaginable has already been written about him, except for one. The subject of that missing book is contentious because it addresses the fundamental question of what caused Senna’s car to veer off the track at 300km/h on Lap 7 of the San Marino Grand Prix. Tamburello was conceived more than fifteen years ago as a private project to fulfil my own need for understanding. The original project had grown in fits and starts and lay dormant for over a decade until its resurrection when I was approached to publish again my old material on Imola ’94. What began as minor revision of a short article has metamorphosed into a book. I’m painfully aware of the fact that - for many understandable reasons - the cause of Ayrton Senna’s accident remains a sensitive subject, but I feel an obligation towards the wider world to share what I’ve discovered.
