A.1 Transport Theorem for a Single Phase Region The transport theorem is employed deriving the conservation equations in continuum mechanics. The mathematical statement is sometimes attributed to, or named in honor of, the German Mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz (1646–1716) and the British fluid dynamics engineer Osborne Reynolds (1842–1912) due to their work and con- tributions related to the theorem. Hence it follows that the transport theorem, or alternate forms of the theorem, may be named the Leibnitz theorem in mathematics and Reynolds transport theorem in mechanics. In a customary interpretation the Reynolds transport theorem provides the link between the system and control volume representations, while the Leibnitz’s theorem is a three dimensional version of the integral rule for differentiation of an integral. There are several notations used for the transport theorem and there are numerous forms and corollaries. A very clear, very well-blended book, admirably covering the mathematics, physics, and astrophysics of GR. Excellent presentation of black holes and gravitational radiation. The explanation of the geodesic equation and the affine connection is very clear and enlightening. Not so much on cosmology, though a nice introduction to the physics of inflation. Overall, my favourite text on this topic. (The metric has a different sign convention in HEL06 compared with Weinberg 1972 & MTW [see below], as well as these notes. Be careful.) Weinberg, S. 1972, Gravitation and Cosmology. Principles and applications of the General Theory of Relativity, (New York: John Wiley) Referenced as W72. What is now the classic reference by the great man, but lacking any discussion whatsoever of black holes, and almost nothing on the geometrical interpretation of the equations. The author is explicit in his aversion to anything geometrical: gravity is a field theory with a mere geometrical \analogy" according to Weinberg. But there is no way to make sense of the equations, in any profound sense, without immersing onself in geometry.

It is shown that among the variety of contradictory integration prescriptions existing in the current literature, there is only one unique minimal set of consistent rules, which is compatible with Connes’ normalized cyclic cohomology of the Graßmann algebra. arXiv:hep-th/0401231v1 29 Jan 2004 Introduction That branch of mathematics in which a Z/2-grading plays dominant role is, somewhat emphatically, also called ‘supermathematics’. It is of fundamental importance in physics since it underlies the treatment of fermionic particles, and as such it is part of the standard repertoire in quantum field theory (see, e.g. [1, 2]). Of course, these tools get involved also in supersymmetric theories [3, 4], but for its justification there is no need to take recourse to supersymmetry since already for conventional theories containing fermions one must make use of what is known as the differential and integral calculus on a Graßmann algebra. After preparatory work of Schwinger [5, 6], Matthews & Salam [7] and others this calculus was created by the Russian mathematician Berezin [8] in the year 1966. Since then this theory has undergone revision, also by Berezin himself (see [9, 10]), and nowadays a variety of conflicting rules is given in the literature, e.g., some authors use anticommuting differentials for the Grassmann variables, whereas others use commuting ones, and the like.
