Signed: Date: 25/02/2018 1 Abstract This project presents the results of the analysis of fossil beetle assemblages extracted from 71 samples from two peat profiles from the Halashazi Wetland in the southern Altai region of northwest China. The fossil assemblages allowed the reconstruction of local environments of the early (10,424 to 9500 cal. yr BP) and middle Holocene (6374 to 4378 cal. yr BP). In total, 54 Coleoptera taxa representing 44 genera and 14 families have been found, and 37 species have been identified, including a new species, Helophorus sinoglacialis. The majority of the fossil beetle species identified are today part of the Siberian fauna, and indicate cold steppe or tundra ecosystems. Based on the biogeographic affinities of the fossil faunas, it appears that the Altai Mountains served as dispersal corridor for cold-adapted (northern) beetle species during the Holocene. Quantified temperature estimates were made using the Mutual Climate Range (MCR) method. In addition, indicator beetle species (cold adapted species and bark beetles) have helped to identify both cold and warm intervals, and moisture conditions have been estimated on the basis of water associated species. -

Keith Philips Copyright by Glené Mynhardt 2012 Abstract Ant-associated behavior has evolved rampantly among various groups of Arthropoda, and has arisen in at least 34 families of beetles. Due to the amazing morphological modifications and different kinds of interactions that occur within myrmecophilous (ant-associated) beetles, authors have predicted that myrmecophily has evolved in a step-wise fashion from casual, facultative associations to closely integrated, obligate interactions. In this dissertation, myrmecophily within the Coleoptera is reviewed, and known behaviors, ant-beetle interactions, and associated morphological adaptations are discussed. In order to better understand how myrmecophily has evolved, two groups of beetles are studied in a phylogenetic context. A cladistic analysis of 40 species of the myrmecophilous scarab genus, Cremastocheilu s Knoch is presented. Characters related to a myrmecophilous habit are largely informative, especially those characters related to the glandular trichomes (clusters of setae typically associated with exocrine glands). Two of the five previously recognized subgenera, C. (Myrmecotonus ) and C. (Anatrinodia ) are synonymized with the subgenus C. (Cremastocheilus ). Even though behavioral information is only known for a few species, the resulting phylogeny indicates that monophyletic subgenera are largely associated with the same ant hosts, although specific interactions with ant hosts can vary even in closely-related taxa. -

Updated nomenclature and references are provided for all species. The goal of this list is to set a baseline for improvement of our knowledge of the state’s staphylinid fauna, as well as to goad ourselves and others into creating new, or updating existing, regional faunal lists of the world’s most speciose beetle family. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Jubogaster towai gen. et sp. nov. is described from a colony of Pheidole xanthogaster Wilson (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the Peruvian Amazon. The new taxon is amongst the largest pselaphine species known. Its transverse head implies an affinity with Trogastrini (Pselaphinae: Euplectitae), but J. towai lacks typical characters diagnostic for trogastrines and possesses others, such as a Jubini-like pronotum and equally-sized tarsal claws, that obscure its systematic relationships. To place J. towai phylogenetically, we sequenced a fragment of 28s rDNA for the new species and a range of other pselaphines, including members of Trogastrini and other tribes of Euplectitae. The topology produced by this analysis supports the inclusion of Jubogaster in Trogastrini, thereby indicating that morphology within this tribe can be more malleable than previously thought. Many of the largest pselaphine taxa are guests of social insect colonies. We discuss whether an evolutionary correlation (or causal relationship) exists between body enlargement and an inquilinous lifestyle in Pselaphinae.
