African dancehall artists may very well represent the most exciting (and least- r e c o g n i z e d ) m o vement happening in dancehall today. Africa is so huge, culturally rich and diverse that it is difficult to generalize about the musical happenings. Yet a recent musical sampling of the continent shows that dancehall is begin- ning to emerge as a powerful African musical form in its own right. Coping with Babylon: The Proper Rastology (2005): Mutabaruka, Half P... http://www.popmatters.com/pm/film/reviews/50538/coping-with-babylo... CALL FOR PAPERS: PopMatters seeks feature essays about any aspect of popular culture, present or past. Coping with Babylon: The Proper Rastology Director: Oliver Hill Cast: Mutabaruka, Half Pint, Luciano, Freddie McGregor, Barry Chevannes (2005) Rated: Unrated US DVD release date: 7 October 2007 (MVD) by Matthew Kantor Burning All Illusion Tonight Rastafari is known to the world through reggae music. Many interviewees in Oliver Hill’s Coping with Babylon: the Proper Rastology, who live Rastafari in their daily lives, cite Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Dennis Brown in particular as ambassadors of Jamaica’s great folk religion, never seeking to diminish these musicians’ roles in spreading the word. Rastafarian imagery has infiltrated popular culture not just through reggae and other kindred music, but also in the form of clothing, fashion, and general iconography. Despite the well-established co-option of the religion’s trappings and the tremendous popularity of many reggae, dub, and dancehall artists, Coping with Babylon: the Proper Rastology takes a sober, relatively non-musical path in broadcasting the views and roles of Rastafari in the early twenty-first century. Musicians including Luciano and Freddie McGregor are interviewed but so are leaders of various Rastafarian sects in addition to everyday followers of the faith in both Jamaica and New York. The film serves to remind viewers that Rastafarianism is a religion that deeply affects its practitioners and that music is only one aspect of it. And, like most religions, different sects vary in some of their more significant approaches and practices.

  • 1 Reggae Great Dennis Brown's Three
1 REGGAE GREAT DENNIS BROWN’S THREE MOST INTERNATIONAL ALBUMS ISSUED ON CD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE U.S. ON SPECIAL TWO-CD SET THE COMPLETE A&M YEARS The three biggest international albums of Dennis Brown, the Crown Prince of Reggae who was once more popular than even Bob Marley in their Jamaica homeland, will finally make their U.S. CD debuts 20 years and more after being originally issued. Dennis Brown: The Complete A&M Years (A&M/UME), released June 24, 2003, brings together his A&M albums in one two-CD package. All 30 tracks, each digitally remastered, are heard once again from his early ‘80s albums Foul Play, Love Has Found Its Way and The Prophet Rides Again. The Complete A&M Years also features liner notes by reggae historian and author David Katz. Brown scored numerous hits through the ‘70s, gaining fame not only in Jamaica but England. His move to A&M was a major step seeking more widespread success and his albums there reflect a more commercial approach. 1981’s Foul Play includes such classics as “The Existence Of Jah,” “I Need Your Love (Rasta Children)” and “The World Is Troubled.” “Your Man” is one of many songs that still fill a dance floor. Re-cuts of “If I Follow My Heart” and “The Cheater” hold the conviction of their originals and “If I Had The World” is a love song in keeping with his standards. The title track is Brown at his funkiest. “On The Rocks” and “Come On Baby” reach towards other shores, though both retain a Jamaican lyrical sensibility.

No doubt many long-time reggae fans will be delighted with the DVD release of "Word, Sound And Power". The latter had its premiere at the 1980 San Francisco International Film Festival and since then spawned a devout following and a growing reputation among reggae lovers who passed around worn-out VHS dubs. This truly worthwhile documentary about Reggae and the Soul Syndicate Band was filmed in Jamaica in 1979. For much of the 1970s, one of the leading show and recording bands in Jamaica was the Soul Syndicate Band. It was a top-notch unit that included drummer Carlton "Santa" Davis, bass player George "Fully" Fullwood, guitarists Earl "Chinna" Smith and Tony Chin, keyboardist Jamacca, percussionist Goldfinger and sax player Enroy "Tenor" Grant. The Soul Syndicate Band played on several of Dennis Brown's hits for Winston "Niney" Holness, including "Westbound Train" and "Cassandra". As their reputation grew, so did the demand for them to play for other acts including Ken 1 of 2 2/4/2008 9:26 AM Review - DVD - Soul Syndicate Band ~ Word, Sound And Power file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/pam/Local%20Settings/Tempo...
