Frank Zappa –
Frank Zappa – Halloween 81 (67:53 + 63:56 + 58:13 + 73:26 + 76:51 +76:52, 6 CDs,Zappa Family Trust, 2020) He’s back to thrill and chill you! At The Palladium New York 1981“). -

The Rondo Hatton Report Vol Xii
THE RONDO HATTON REPORT VOL XII SEPTEMBER 21, 2012 IN THIS ISSUE This our twelfth issue now makes up a round dozen, marking a cycle of three years since our organ first exposed itself to the world. Not bad, not bad , though we do say so ourselves. Whether lurker, shirker or smirker , we hope y'all have enjoyed the show. This edition continues to bring you poetry and polemic from the usual suspects and more, ranging from a heartfelt plea for digital insertionism to another fine opportunity to ruin your life , dispensing essential insights into the counting of tuplets along the way. And lest ye forget: this is an open trans-continental platform for the riding of hobby horses , mechanical or otherwise. Bring yours to the races, why don'chya ? CONTENTS 1. LINGUA FRANKA PART VIII / Arjun von CAEMMERER 2. THE POVERTY OF COMPLETISM / Mimi GABIN-KHAN 3. WATERMELON IN EASTER HEY / Madge IMMANEY 4. ZAPPA SURVIVOR / Scott SCHROEN 5. WHEN COMPOSERS DECOMPOSE / Larry TESHMOW 6. ZAPPA: HEGEL, OR, NOT AGAIN (AGAIN) / Ben WATSON 1 1. LINGUA FRANKA PART VIII: An Office With A Foyer Arjun von Caemmerer Elvis may have left the building but it is Frank Zappa who has infiltrated the establishment. From each sidewall of my consulting room, off-centre and central, Zappa looks in, witness to the vagaries of each doctor-patient interaction. What’s a man like him doing in a place like this? Nothing. And everything: It is far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has. -

THE RONDO HATTON REPORT VOL XIII DECEMBER 21, 2012 CONTENTS 1. THE BEST COVERS YOU NEVER HEARD / John ANTHONY 2. LINGUA FRANKA PART IX / Arjun von CAEMMERER 3. THE CRUX OF THE BISCUIT / Mary HALLEY 4. PTTAOASAGM / Simon PRENTIS 5. ZAPPA SURVIVOR Pt II / Scott SCHROEN 1 1. THE BEST COVERS YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE John Anthony The album The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Live features a wide variety of covers including “Stairway to Heaven,” “Ring of Fire,” “Purple Haze,” “Sunshine of Your Love,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” and the “Theme From ‘Bonzana.’” This album also features many of Zappa’s compositions spanning his entire career including “Andy,” “Zomby Woof,” “Cosmik Debris,” and “The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue.” This paper examines the covers “Ring of Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Sunshine of Your Love” and how by removing important authentic elements found in the original recordings, Zappa was able to create completely new arrangements. Ring of Fire “Ring of Fire” was recorded by Johnny Cash in 1963. The instrumentation for this recording includes two trumpets, two female vocalists, two acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, and drum set. The song is in the key of G and has a tempo of quarter-note equals approximately 104. The overall stylistic aesthetic of Cash’s arrangement is introduced in the four bar introduction. The time signature alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 while two trumpets play melodic material in a mariachi style. Throughout the rest of the song, the trumpets use this melodic idea as a call and response to Cash’s vocals. -
Rock 101 by Joe Deninzon
Rock 101 by Joe Deninzon WWW.JOEDENINZON.COM Welcome to ROCK 101! Rock is an attitude as much as it is a musical art form. It has shaken the world and continues to push boundaries and start revolutions. Rock is about rebellion, freedom, screaming at the world. It has been used as an inspirational rallying cry, a call to arms, a call to dance, to love… It is about waking up the animal inside of you, and holding nothing back! The main thing I love about Rock n Roll is the “Jeckyl and Hyde” aspect of it, or the “Superman /Clark Kent,” if you will. You can be a mild-mannered accountant, doctor, lawyer, parent by day, and be a rock demon by night! The escapism and theatrical elements of rock music always intrigued and inspired me. It’s NOT just about the music, it is also about putting on a show ands celebrating your true self. Florida State University (2002) M.M. Florida State University (2004) July 2009 Committee Chair: Dr. David Carson Berry ABSTRACT This dissertation offers the first large-scale analytical study of the instrumental music of Frank Zappa (1940–1993). Following initial commentary in Chapter 1 on the problems of categorization in the repertoire, Chapter 2 offers a preliminary discussion of style and form in Zappa’s music. Regarding style, I detail the fallouts of Zappa’s unique early musical education as well as the influence of his guitar playing in his compositional style. My investigation of form explores the formal implications of melodic repetition, examining non-repeating forms characteristic of the hybrid music and repeating forms utilizing variation procedures such as contour retention and isomelism . Chapter 3 is devoted to rhythm and meter in Zappa’s music. The primary topics of this chapter are various types of rhythmic/metrical conflict, including polymeter, metrical dissonance , and rhythmic dissonance , which are explained in part as an attempted merging of advanced compositional techniques and rock/pop music norms. -
