    PARLEMENTARY ELECTIONS IN SPAIN 28th April 2019 European The Socialist Workers’ Party Elections monitor led by Pedro Sanchez ahead in Spain is due to stay in office Corinne Deloy The Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), led by outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, won a clear victory in the parliamentary elections on 28th April in Spain – it was a snap election following the rejection of the country’s budget by the Congress of Deputies, the lower house Results of the Spanish parliament (Cortes generales), on 13th February last. The PSOE won 28.68% of the vote and took 123 seats in the Congress of Deputies, i.e. +39 in comparison with the previous elections on 26th June 2016. The main opposition party, the People’s Party (PP) led in the region with 24.59% (3.9% at. national level) by Pablo Casado, collapsed: it won 16.70% of the vote of the vote and 15 seats (+ 6). Junts per Catalunya and its number of seats in the Congress was halved (JxCat) won 12,05% (1.91% at national level) of the (66) - -69 in comparison with 2016. The centrist party vote and 7 seats (- 1). In the Basque country, the Ciudadanos led by Alberto Rivera came third with Nationalist Party (EAJ/PNV) led by Andoni Ortuzar 15.85% and 57 seats (+ 25). Foreign Policy Bolivia expels two Spanish diplomats Bolivia expelled two diplomats who met associates of Bolivia’s former President Evo Morales in the residence of the Mexican Ambassador in La Paz. Spain reciprocated the move. Cristina Borreguero, the Chargé d’Affaires, and Álvaro Fernández, the Consul, paid what was termed a courtesy visit to the Mexican Embassy, but the Bolivian government said there was an ulterior ‘hostile’ motive. The Mexican Ambassador was also expelled. Mexico gave Morales asylum after he fled Bolivia following his disputed re-election. He has since moved to Argentina. Among the nine people who have sought refuge in the Mexican Embassy in La Paz is former Interior Minister Juan Ramón Quintana, who is accused of sedition and terrorism. Spain in 14th position in new human development index Domestic Scene COVID-19 incidence rate drops to almost 200, but still far from target of 25 Spain’s 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population, a key measure of the state of the pandemic, dropped from a second-wave high of 529 on 9 November to 201 on 16 November (see Figure 1). But it was still far from the government’s target of 25, amid fears of a third wave in January if people dropped their guard during an easing of restrictions over the Christmas period. Figure 1.
