His photo titled “Eagle Eye," was selected by a panel of judges as the Photograph of the Year for the 2017 National Football League Season. The image captured Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles’ loving gaze into the eyes of his daughter Lily after his MVP performance in the Eagles’ 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. on Feb. 4, 2018. Carr, a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, began his career in the late-1980s working for a small daily newspaper in Frankfort, Ky. He then worked for the Associated Press in Alabama and Baltimore where he covered both news and sports before joining Getty Images in 2011. The Hall of Fame’s prestigious contest is open to professional photographers on assignment to cover NFL games. Photos taken during the 2017 NFL season, that included Super Bowl LII and the 2018 Pro Bowl, were eligible. Carr’s entry was the first-place winner in the feature category while NFL photographer COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE Logan Bowles was first in the Action category. His photo “Take Off for Six” shows Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones diving in midair toward an end zone pylon for a touchdown during the Falcons game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 26, 2017. Judging was conducted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame by a panel of prominent photo editors and photographers. The judges included John Reid, III (Team Photographer for the Cleveland Browns), Ben Liebenberg (Director of Photography/Lead Photographer at the NFL), Micky Palmer (veteran photographer who has worked every Super Bowl to date), Terrell Lloyd (Team Photographer for the San Francisco 49ers) and Tony Tomsic, (veteran photographer who has covered pro football for more than 50 years). Carr will be officially honored at the Enshrinees Roundtable, part of the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls. The enshrinement of the Class of 2018 – Bobby Beathard, Robert Brazile, Brian Dawkins, Jerry Kramer, Ray Lewis, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Brian Urlacher – will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4.     Dec. 19, 2017 For Immediate Release Four Raiders Selected to 2018 Pro Bowl ALAMEDA, Calif. – Oakland Raiders C Rodney Hudson, DE Khalil Mack, G/T Kelechi Osemele and T Donald Penn have been named to the 2018 Pro Bowl, the NFL announced Tuesday. LB NaVorro Bowman, QB Derek Carr, G Gabe Jackson, P Marquette King, RB Marshawn Lynch and WR Cordarrelle Patterson (return specialist) were named as alternates for the annual all-star game, scheduled to be played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 28, 2018. Mack has been selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl after earning the honor in 2015 and 2016 as well. He has started all 14 games this season and has recorded 77 tackles (56 solo), a team-leading 10.5 sacks (75.5 yards), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a career-high five passes defensed. Mack has notched two multi-sack performances in 2017, and is currently on a five-game sack streak, the longest active streak in the NFL. While his 10.5 sacks on the year rank ninth in the league, his six since Week 11 are tied for the most in the NFL. With his most recent two-sack performance in Week 15, Mack has now totaled double-digit sacks for the third consecutive season, becoming just the fifth Raider in club history to accomplish the feat since sacks became an official stat in 1982. Additionally, Mack is one of just three defenders league wide to do so in each of the last three seasons. Hudson, Osemele and Penn anchor one of the most dominant offensive lines in the league.

The longtime NFL stars added an achievement that will without a doubt move to the top of their accolade-filled biographies when they were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame inAugust, 2014. Jones and Brooks became the first pair of first-ballot Hall of Famers from the same class who attended the same college in over 40 years. The pair’s journey together started 20 years ago. Just as Brooks was wrapping up his All-America career at Florida State in 1994, Jones was joining the Seminoles out of Holmes Community College (Miss.) for the 1995 season. Brooks went to 11 Pro Bowls and never missed a game in 14 seasons (all with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), while Jones became the NFL’s premier left tackle, going to nine Pro Bowls over 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Both retired in 2008, and, six years later, Jones and Brooks were teammates for the first time as first-ballot Hall of Famers.

The Patriots defeated Tennessee 35-14 in the Divisional round and the Jaguars knocked off Pittsburgh 45-42. The NFC Championship Game will feature the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles. In the Divisional Playoffs, the Vikings knocked off New Orleans 29-24 and the Eagles defeated Atlanta 15-10. Both Philadelphia and Jacksonville completed “worst-to-first” turnarounds. At least one team has won its division the season after finishing in or tied for last place in 14 of the past 15 seasons.     Quarterback Evaluation in the National Football League using Tracking Data Matthew Reyers and Tim B. Swartz ∗ Abstract This paper evaluates quarterback performance in the National Football League. With the availability of player tracking data, there exists the capability to assess various options that are available to quarterbacks and the expected points gained resulting from each option. The options available to a quarterback are based on considering multiple frames during a play such that a current option may evolve into new options over time. Our approach also considers the possibility of quarterback running options. With tracking data, the location of receivers on the field and the openness of receivers are measurable quantities which are important considerations in the assessment of quarterback options. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate the probabilities of success of the passing options and the estimated expected points gained from the options. The estimation procedure also takes into account what may happen after a reception. The quarterback's observed execution is then measured against the optimal available option.
