With the availability of player tracking data, there exists the capability to assess various options that are available to quarterbacks and the expected points resulting from each option. The quarterback’s execution is then measured against the optimal available option. Since decision making does not rely on the quality of teammates, a quarterback metric is introduced that provides a novel perspective on an understudied aspect of quarterback assessment. • Quarterback Evaluation in the National Football League Using Tracking Data
Quarterback Evaluation in the National Football League using Tracking Data Matthew Reyers and Tim B. Swartz ∗ Abstract This paper evaluates quarterback performance in the National Football League. With the availability of player tracking data, there exists the capability to assess various options that are available to quarterbacks and the expected points gained resulting from each option. The options available to a quarterback are based on considering multiple frames during a play such that a current option may evolve into new options over time. Our approach also considers the possibility of quarterback running options. With tracking data, the location of receivers on the field and the openness of receivers are measurable quantities which are important considerations in the assessment of quarterback options. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate the probabilities of success of the passing options and the estimated expected points gained from the options. The estimation procedure also takes into account what may happen after a reception. The quarterback's observed execution is then measured against the optimal available option. Keywords : expected points, machine learning, model validation, player tracking data. ∗M. Reyers is an MSc candidate and T. Swartz is Professor, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Simon Fraser University, 8888 University Drive, Burnaby BC, Canada V5A1S6. Both Reyers and Swartz have been partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The authors thank two reviewers whose detailed comments helped improve the manuscript. 1 1 INTRODUCTION The National Football League (NFL) is the top revenue league in sport (Amoros 2016) with an average team revenue of $453,000,000 in the 2017 season (Gough 2018).

NOTES & COMMENTS Deflategate Pumped Up: Analyzing the Second Circuit’s Decision and the NFL Commissioner’s Authority JOSH MANDEL* Deflategate was one of the most controversial scandals in NFL history, and while many became fascinated due to their love of football, Deflategate was ultimately rooted in law. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback for the New England Pa- triots, for four games for engaging in “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the game of pro- fessional football.” More specifically, Goodell suspended Brady because he was generally aware of Patriots staff de- flating footballs prior to the 2015 AFC Championship game, and because he failed to cooperate with the investigation into the deflated footballs.

  • A Reproducible Method for Offensive Player Evaluation in Football (Extended Edition)
nflWAR: A Reproducible Method for Offensive Player Evaluation in Football (Extended Edition) Ronald Yurko, Samuel Ventura, and Maksim Horowitz Department of Statistics & Data Science, Carnegie Mellon University July 13, 2018 Abstract Unlike other major professional sports, American football lacks comprehensive statisti- cal ratings for player evaluation that are both reproducible and easily interpretable in terms of game outcomes. Existing methods for player evaluation in football depend heavily on pro- prietary data, are not reproducible, and lag behind those of other major sports. We present four contributions to the study of football statistics in order to address these issues. First, we develop the R package nflscrapR to provide easy access to publicly available play-by-play data from the National Football League (NFL) dating back to 2009. Second, we introduce a novel multinomial logistic regression approach for estimating the expected points for each play. Third, we use the expected points as input into a generalized additive model for esti- mating the win probability for each play. Fourth, we introduce our nflWAR framework, using multilevel models to isolate the contributions of individual offensive skill players, and provid- ing estimates for their individual wins above replacement (WAR). We estimate the uncertainty in each player’s WAR through a resampling approach specifically designed for football, and we present these results for the 2017 NFL season. We discuss how our reproducible WAR framework, built entirely on publicly available data, can be easily extended to estimate WAR for players at any position, provided that researchers have access to data specifying which arXiv:1802.00998v2 [stat.AP] 12 Jul 2018 players are on the field during each play.

  • “Taking a Knee for the Constitution”: the Kaepernick and Reid Grievances May Be Settled but Do They Nevertheless Raise Important Constitutional Questions?
Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 6, No. 4, December 2019 doi:10.30845/jesp.v6n4p12 “Taking a Knee for the Constitution”: the Kaepernick and Reid Grievances May be Settled but Do they Nevertheless Raise Important Constitutional Questions? Richard J. Hunter, Jr. Professor of Legal Studies John H. Shannon Professor of Legal Studies Seton Hall University Abstract This article is a discussion of the issues and events relating to the protests of Colin Kaepernick, an accomplished quarterback in the National Football League. Part I describes the incidents themselves, the inability of Kaepernick to secure another quarterback position, and the grievance arbitration which he filed against the National Football League. Part II deals with the question whether Kaepernick has a justiciable claim that his First Amendment rights were violated in the context of the doctrine of ―state action.‖ Keywords: Grievance; National Football League; Arbitration; First Amendment; ―State Action‖ PART I 1. Who Is Colin Kaepernick? It is important to understand the background of the main protagonist in this saga (see, e.g., Dos Santos, 2017; Abdeldaiem, 2019). Colin Rand Kaepernick was born in 1987 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents separated before Kaepernick was born. Kaepernick was placed for adoption with a white couple, Rick and Teresa Kaepernick. The couple had two older children, a son Kyle and a daughter Devon. The Kaepernicks lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, until Colin was age four, when his family moved to California. Kaepernick began playing football when he was eight years old. In high school, he was an excellent student, earning a 4.0 GPA at John H.
