Different influences exist on all planes and effect all things in different ways. Researchers have the power of creating the history we know and all too often is the biased influence of the researcher forgotten and their words are taken as facts. Different researchers approach, the studies using different schools of thought such as e.g. ‘processualism’ and post-processualism. Some scholars firmly stay by one approach side, but the approaches should be viewed as complementing each other. Raising awareness of some of the major questions within the research, and scholars different ways of approaching them is a main point in this thesis. The different scholars' approaches to research concerning the ‘Sea Peoples’ etnichity, their migration and impact brought up in the different texts have been analyzed. Concluding remarks focus on that the term ‘Sea Peoples’ is a creation of the modern day scholars and that researchers should refrain from using the term and focus on the different clans instead. A strong vote for interdisciplinary and complementary studies is presented regarding the future of this study and others. 4 Introduction Terms like the ‘Sea Peoples’ have been used for various groups throughout documented history, from modern day piracy on the African coast to the times of ancient Egypt. From the Scandinavian Vikings to the Caribbean pirates, the words of peoples coming from the seas raiding and invading lands have been documented all over the world (Harper, 2014; Brink, Price, 2008; Lucie-Smith, 1978). “The foreign countries made a conspiracy in their islands. All at once the lands were removed and scattered in the fray. No land could stand before their arms, from Khatte, Quode, Carchemish, Arzawa, and Alashiya on, being cut off at [one time]. A camp [was set up] in one place in Amor. They desolated its people, and its land was like that which had never come into being. They were coming forward toward Egypt, while flame was prepared before them. Their confederation was the Pelset, Tjekker, Shekelesh, Denye(n) and Weshesh, lands united. They laid their hands upon the lands as far as the circuit of the earth, their hearts confident and trusting: “Our plans will succeed!”” (Wilson 1969, referred to in Cline, O’Connor, 109) Fig. 2:2. The picture above provides and overview of the area in question, as well as the proceedings of the collapse which were the invasions and migrations. The Egyptian New Kingdom, Hittite Empire and Mycenaean Greece are visible in different colors. It is only meant to present an image for understanding of both the collapse and the area during approx. 1200 BC. This map is only showing one side of the collapse, but I consider it to be a good overview to begin with. The ‘Sea Peoples’ of the late Bronze Age Mediterranean is an umbrella term for the different clans that, during the Late Bronze Age, raided and invaded lands and cities in Egypt, the Aegean and the 5 Near East. They were the Sherden, Peleset, Tjekker, Denyen, Shekelesh, Ekwesh, Teresh, Karkisa, Lukka

Over a century of scholarship has puzzled over whether they were responsible for the collapse of several Late Bronze Age civilizations or simply one of several catalysts that put that collapse in motion. Many attempts have also been made to determine the origins of the various groups of Sea Peoples using textual and iconographic evidence, as well as the material culture of the Sea Peoples identified in Cyprus and the Levant. This material culture is characterized foremost by locally made Mycenaean-style pottery; as such, a considerable Aegean or Mycenaean presence has been argued in the multi-ethnic Sea Peoples coalition. The most important visual record that survives of the Sea People documents a land and sea battle against the forces of Ramesses III in the early 12th century B.C.E.

    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

In the 8th century BCE Kushian king Pianky swept through the entire Nile valley and united Egypt. This unification did not restore the luster of the old empirical ways however. Egypt returned to a certain level of strength but was no longer the big kid on the block as their civilization had to compete with the Greeks (Minoans/Myceneans), and the other Near East kingdoms.

    Episode 018 The Beginning of the End We finished up last time looking at some theories regarding the historicity of the Trojan War, but we also looked at the broad trend of the Bronze Age powers around the Mediterranean. That trend was on a decidedly downward slope, and today, we’ll being to see the angle of that slope steepen even further. Seeing as how we’re on Episode 018, if we go by our canonically numbered episodes, anyway, I thought it might be worthwhile to try and end our look at the Bronze Age by episode 020, at which point we can perhaps take a whirlwind tour review episode through everything thus far. I’d like to try organizing the different major periods and topics of focus into what we could call ‘seasons,’ so for example, our first 20 episodes about maritime history in the Bronze Age can be season 1, then we’ll take season 2 to look at the start of the Iron Age, things like the emergence of the Phoenicians, the rise of Greek sea power, and some of the interesting battles and other topics, the Delian League, the Peloponnesian War, et cetera. I think season 2 will really be our season of examining the first true thalassocracies, so who knows how many episodes will emerge in the end. Let me know any thoughts on that game plan moving forward, but for now let’s open the book on today’s episode. I think an appropriate page on which to start today is on that concerning the city of Ugarit.

To give complete and accurate account of events in the Levant during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries B. C. is one of the most diffi- cult tasks presented by ancient history. It is also one of the most fasci- nating; for it must include not only a summary of what is known of the peoples of Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt, but also a survey of the My- cenean Age, and the Late Minoan "Sea-Raiders". It is moreover the historical background of the Trojan War. It was a time of great unrest, of fierce invasions and national migrations, whose effects lasted long. At the turn of the Century, in 1200 B. C. these are the main lines of the picture. From the Adriatic Sea to the Persian Gulf a large pro- portion of cities and tribes were independent of any great overlord. Knossos had been OTerthrown for some two centuries and although partly reinhabited it no longer ruled the waves, and the Mediterranean was swept by the Late Minoan sea-rovers. Egypt was powerless abroad and decadent at home. Babylon was just driving out the Kassites who had ruled for some centuries, and as yet the new native dynasty had little influence outside^). Assyria, whose power had greatly declined since the death of Tukulti-Ninib some forty years earlier, was beginning to reassert herseif but was still fully occupied in guarding her own frontiers. The empire of the Hittites was being finally overthrown by a fierce invasion of the Muski Phrygians who had crossed from Europe and were devastating Asia Minor.
