We Equip Our Children Academically, Culturally and Through Sport to Succeed in a Changing World Our vision is to educate the whole child and let their light shine. We equip our children academically, culturally and through sport to succeed in a changing world. Our nurturing approach is true to our community values and encourages creativity and problem-solving whilst teaching respect for ourselves, others and our environment. Welcome to Kommetjie Primary School. Tucked between Slangkop Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, our school looks out towards Hout Bay and Chapman’s peak. We pride ourselves on our 100-year heritage of excellence and our vision embraces all aspects of Kommetjie life: academics, sport, art, culture, music and the environment. We cherish the simple pleasures in life – the feel of sand between our toes and the salt in our hair. Our environment forms a strong part of our identify. Academics At Kommetjie Primary School academics are important and we provide enhancement of the standard curriculum through enrichment classes such as Experi-Buddies, Computer Lab and Brains4Games. Our children thrive academically and transition with ease into high school. Last year, our 2012 Head Girl came second in the Western Cape Matric exams and our 2017 Grade 7 pupils were accepted into the following major schools in the Western Cape: From Fish Hoek High School to schools further afield such as Wynberg Boys and Girls High Schools, Westerford, Rustenburg and Springfield - to name but a few. “Learners from Kommetjie Primary are well-prepared for the demands of high school – both socially and academically. It is common knowledge that their annual systemic assessment scores are very high, and this is evident in the calibre of Grade 8 learners that come from Kommetjie.” Local high school teacher We are proud of our annual Systemic Assessment results (grades 3, 6 and 7) - in 2017 we once again received certificates for results averaging 80% and higher in all 3 of the grades tested. We were also the recipient of a Western Cape Top School Award. Sport We offer an extensive sports programme with athletics, cricket, tennis and swimming during summer and netball, soccer and cross-country during winter. Our facilities include a 25m swimming pool and a tennis court. Judo, surfing and gymnastics are offered as extra-mural activities. During 2017 four Dads slogged it out for 60 hours to break the Guinness Book of World Records for continuous doubles Tennis play. This raised substantial funds to resurface and upgrade our tennis court and sparked a renewed interest in tennis. We now offer both school-funded and private tennis lessons. The school has produced a significant number of Western Province and SA athletes in track and field, cricket, cross-country, surfing and judo. Music All our students enjoy quality music education by a dedicated music teacher as part of the curriculum. Both class and individual music lessons take place during school hours in the music room. Our students participate in local and international music exams, such as UNISA and Royal Schools of Music. We have a junior and senior choir which compete in Eisteddfods and every year we achieve either High Honours or Honours. On alternative years Kommetjie Primary hosts a Choir Festival where the schools in our District celebrate the musical abilities of the children in Southern Cape Town. Jeremy Loops and Alice Phoebe Lou are examples of our alumni who have continued to pursue music and became stars in the local and international music scene. Arts & Culture Art and Drama are a core part of the curriculum for all Grades. Art classes, chess, dance and ballet can also be taken as extra-mural activities. Our annual school play includes all children and gives them experience in every aspect of a stage production: building and painting sets, lighting, music, acting, directing and hospitality. In addition, we host an annual Arts and Culture Week where the whole school comes together to engage in acting, dance, making music and literature. Our learners have won awards at the Annual Cape Leopard Trust Art Competition and the Santam Arts Competition (which we enter every year) and in 2016 and 2017, we respectively won third and first place in the Thrive EnviroArt Competition which required the use of recycled material. Eco Environmental awareness permeates our teaching and learning. The school has been part of the WESSAE Eco School Programme since 2011 and in 2017 we were awarded the top Platinum Award for our Eco Activism. Many dedicated parents and teachers are active in driving and supporting these eco initiatives. Eco Schools coordinator Lorraine McGibbon wrote about our initiatives: “I came away from visits to your school feeling uplifted. We commend you for the example and valuable role you play in caring for the environment in Kommetjie.” We also host regular paper drives and eco events such as Beach Clean-up and Bike to School Day. The Wriggley’s Litterless campaign in 2017 earned the school a tin-crusher which is great fun for the children. Our Veggie Club meets twice a week before school where learners tend their own veggie patches for home use while the communal beds are used for the soup kitchens in our neighbouring communities. We are the first school in Cape Town to participate in the permaculture Neighbourhood Farm School Project – an exciting initiative whereby organic vegetables are grown. Children learn about all aspects of food production in an innovatively designed outdoor classroom. Background The primary objective of this project was to prepare a series of ‘story packages’ providing the content for historical interpretive stories of the ‘far’ South Peninsula. Stories cover the geographical area of Chapman’s Peak southwards to include Imhoff, Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Kommetjie, Witsand, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough, Plateau Road, Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay to Miller’s Point, Boulders, Simon’s Town, Red Hill, Glencairn and Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. The purposes for which these stories are to be told are threefold, namely to support tourism development; to stimulate local interest; and to promote appropriate and sustainable protection of heritage resources through education, stimulation of interest and appropriate knowledge. To this end, the linking of historical stories and tourism development requires an approach to story-telling that goes beyond the mere recording of historic events. The use of accessible language has been a focus. Moreover, it requires an approach that both recognises the iconic, picture-postcard image of parts of Cape Town (to which tourists are drawn initially), but extends it further to address the particular genius loci that is Cape Town’s ‘Deep South’, in all its complexity and coloured by memory, ambivalences and contradictory experiences. We believe there is a need to balance the more conventional approach, which selects people or events deemed worthy of commemoration (for example, the Battle of Muizenberg) to tell the story of places, by interweaving popular memory and culture into these recordings (for example, the rich Muslim culture that existed in Simon’s Town before the removal under the Group Areas Act).

Cape (SPP), the MANDLOVU Development Initiative and, the Development Action Group (DAG). In all of these I have both honed and applied incremental skills learnt from direct practice to design and implement programmes and projects related to urban land, housing, local government, community development and, capacity building in the context of a pro-poor agenda. Between 1996 and 2012 I also worked as a freelance development consultant and researcher through my small company, Social Trends Development Services, where I worked on numerous assignments for government, the NGO sector, and international NGOs related to the design and evaluation of a range of programmes and projects linked to reconstruction and development in the context of our democratic transition.     Xenophobia Outsider Exclusion Addressing Frail Social Cohesion in South Africa's Diverse Communies Masiphumelele Case Study October 2017 I. Executive Summary SAVI conducted field research in Masiphumelele from the 25-29 April 2016 and 20-22 February 2017. The study found during Phase I that Masiphumelele has experienced incidences of mob justice, which resulted in leadership divisions where youth and older generations clash. Since September 2015, Masiphumelele has experienced varying levels of protest, following community outcries around crime and violence. After two violent crimes in Masiphumelele – the rape and murder of 14-year-old Amani Pula, and the rape of a woman in September – community members began to protest. The collective action extended to vigilantism, which resulted in several murders and other violence. Wide-scale protest followed, as a young community leader – Lububalo Vellem – was arrested on allegations of murder and public violence. These protests have continued into 2016 and 2017 around the bail hearing and trial of Vellem and other arrested community members. Phase I revealed that the people of Masiphumelele pride themselves as a non-xenophobic community. Given the history of Masiphumelele, it is undeniable that multiculturalism, particularly relating to ethnicity and nationality, is a defining aspect, and one of the most important building blocks, of the community. Since the end of apartheid, Masiphumelele has seen increased rural to urban migration and an influx of foreign nationals, especially from other African countries. The research team found that foreign nationals, while facing some exclusions, are relatively well integrated into the community. Phase II of research focused on filling in the gaps in the assessment of Masiphumelele.
