The Thunder holds a 19-2 record against the Jazz when playing inside Chesapeake Energy Arena and currently has a 16- game win streak against them at home. In the last three games, the Thunder has earned a +10.3 +/- rating, tied for the second-best in the NBA, shooting 51.2 percent (second), grabbing 10.0 steals per game (third) and 7.0 blocks per contest (third). Following this contest, the Thunder will remain home to face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the final matchup of a two-game home stand. Road Warriors: Since the start of December, the Thunder has gone 19-4 on the road, which is the best road record in the NBA during that span (L.A. Lakers, 18-5). From 1/7-2/25, Oklahoma City held a nine-game win streak away from Chesapeake Energy Arena, good for the longest such streak in Thunder history (eight games in 2014). Giving Thanks: Since Thanksgiving Day (11/28), Oklahoma City has earned the third-best record among all NBA teams and the most wins among Western Conference teams during that time span behind Milwaukee (38-9, .809) and L.A. Lakers (33-11, .750). Additionally, since 12/18, the Thunder has gone 28-10 (.737), which is good for the best record in the Western Conference. RECORD WIN % PPG FG % Before Thanksgiving 6-11 35.3 107.4 45.9 Since Thanksgiving 34-13 72.3 112.0 47.8 Coming in Clutch: The Thunder started the season 4-8 in clutch time, but since 11/25, has gone 25-5, good for the best clutch records in the NBA in that timeframe. OKC each of the top five leaders in clutch +/- rating (Adams, Gilgeous-Alexander, Schröder, Paul, Gallinari). Also, Gallinari is tied for the third-most clutch threes with his 14. Gilgeous-Alexander and Paul rank tied for first for clutch time steals with 10. As a team, the Thunder has earned the most clutch points in the NBA (447). In 13 games from 12/16 to 1/7, nine were decided in clutch time and the Thunder won all but one of those contests, good for the most such wins in the NBA during that span.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.
