Using Validation Logic, a patented targeting engine, Desktop Authority can tailor the environment to the user based on over 40 criteria. Admins can map drives, manage printers, configure web browsers, Outlook profiles and much more. Customize settings based on Active Directory information, network information, or whether the user is connecting from a physical, virtual or published desktop. Desktop Authority lets admins eliminate login scripts, simplify and streamline group policies and add powerful new configuration options to traditional client management systems. Desktop Authority 10.0 is a major release, with enhanced features and functionality. See New features and Enhancements. Desktop Authority incorporates ExpertAssist version 8.6.1. About ExpertAssist 8.6.1 ExpertAssist is the perfect choice for anyone who has ever needed to access and control a PC or server from elsewhere, be it from down the hall or from halfway around the world. All that is required to control a PC or Desktop Authority 10.0 1 Release Notes server is a web browser or WAP-enabled wireless device. ExpertAssist is a remote administration tool that lets you control and administer Microsoft® Windows®-based computers over a local area network or the Internet. Originally designed for network administrators, the ExpertAssist has evolved to offer a wide variety of remote computing solutions for an equally wide variety of users. Today, the ExpertAssist provides many useful capabilities such as Java-based desktop remote control, file transfer protocol (FTP) for downloading and uploading of files, configuration of the host computer, remote- to-local printing, advanced scripting, and dozens of other features. ExpertAssist acts as the host software on the machine that is to be controlled or accessed. The client (the remote computer that is used to access the host) requires no special software. The client software is any Java enabled web browser, such as Internet Explorer (IE version 11) and others. Many Remote Control features can also be accessed and controlled using such client software as that found in handheld PDAs and WAP-enabled mobile telephones. ExperAssist 8.6.1 is a maintenance release with no new functionality. See Resolved issues. Important Note Issue with Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (v1607) when Secure Boot is enabled There is currently a known issue with Desktop Authority's kernel mode drivers and Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (version 1607). This issue potentially affects both our USB/Port Security and Remote Management client-side drivers. Starting with the Anniversary Edition of Windows 10, Microsoft has begun to enforce new Windows 10 driver signing requirements. This enforcement is causing some customers to experience problems with kernel mode drivers. Specifically, the driver modules within our UBS/Port Security and Remote Management client components may be disabled or removed by the operating system if the Secure Boot option (UEFI Bios Setting) is enabled. We recommend not deploying our USB/Port Security or Remote Management client modules to Windows 10 version 1607 (or greater) machines that have Secure Boot enabled. The development team is actively working on a resolution and an update will be provided as soon as possible. NOTE:Upgrading to Desktop Authority 10 will NOT result in any additional issues for existing 9.3 customers not already experiencing the problem. New Features New features in Desktop Authority 10.0: l Added support for SQL Server 2016 l Added support for Microsoft Outlook 2016 l Added support for Microsoft Office 2016 l Added Off-Network Support (ONS) - allows all domain joined machines to continue receiving new configuration settings, even while disconnected from the corporate network, as long as there is an active internet connection. See also: l Resolved issues Desktop Authority 10.0 2 Release Notes Enhancements The following is a list of enhancements implemented in Desktop Authority 10.0. Table 1: General enhancements Enhancement Issue ID Added support for Chrome and Edge browsers to Remote Management client (ExpertAssist) 737 773 Added support for Chrome and Edge browsers to DA Management Console. Improved Remote Management tab to provide an easier and more reliable connection to client 1414 machines. The enabling of the remote registry service on client machines is no longer required and admins can now nest folders within the Favorites section. 1944 1854 Refactored and optimized all reports resulting in a significant reduction in the time it takes to 1709 general each report. Improved security by updating security related components and signed certificates. 1828 Updated the Kixtart engine which resolved issues with character limits for large strings and also improved off-network support abilities. We continue to work closely with our customers and have found and fixed numerous intermittent bugs, performance bottlenecks, and stability issues. Resolved issues The following is a list of issues addressed in this release. Table 2: Client Side Components Resolved Issue Issue ID Fixed bug where ScriptLogic.MapiServer.exe/ ScriptLogic.MapiServer64.exe may crash 868 depending on configuration. Fixed bug where there may be Chinese chars in principal name when setting Microsoft Outlook 861 Setting element. Improved SLTrace logging regarding Administrative Service and Update Service site maps. 1634 Fixed issue with the unintended modification of the start menu on client machines on Windows 1392 7. Added more specific logging to slagent, slboost, slinstall log files related to entering and exiting 609 various routines. This is where you see notifications about the items needing attention on your PC, as well as a section with quick actions that you can initiate. You click on a category to view and change more settings for that category. Settings in Windows 10 – alternatively use Win () + I key combination. The Settings app from Windows 10 holds almost all the settings governing the way your computer or device works. The traditional way of getting to one setting or to another is to open the appropriate settings category and browse through it until you find what you’re looking for. The Setting app from Windows 10 is very well organized, a lot better than the old Control Panel used to be.

    Rules of the road for safe patching Monthly security patches ship on the second Tuesday of each month (Patch Tuesday). For all versions of Windows, defer them for at least 15 days. That should give Microsoft time to identify and fix any significant oopses. The exception is the rare urgent threat — in which case, we'll tell you to install an update sooner than later. (Check out our AskWoody.com posts on the days following Patch Tuesday.) Another exception: Security patches may also contain nonsecurity fixes. In some cases, you might want to install a security update sooner when it includes a feature fix you really need. Microsoft also sends out preview updates, typically on the third Tuesday of each month. They are completely optional, and we recommend skipping them. We will list them in the next Patch Watch column following their release because Microsoft typically doesn't label them as previews (bad dog!). Updates can be deferred on Window 10 Pro and above. If you're running Win10 Home, we recommend upgrading to Pro. Ensure that Windows 7's patch-update setting are set to download or check for updates, but don't automatically install them. It's your best defense against problematic patches. Other rules Never install hardware drivers -- unless you get them from the computer's manufacturer Never install an update to a newer version of .NET. Let your applications set the .NET versions they need If you are offered .NET 4.8, skip it.     WINDOWS 10 UPDATES Past, Present & Future � Windows as a Service Prior to Windows 10, Microsoft released new versions of Windows every few years. This traditional deployment schedule imposed a training burden on users because the feature revisions were often significant. That schedule also meant waiting long periods without new features — a scenario that doesn’t work in today’s rapidly changing world, a world in which new security, management, and deployment capabilities are necessary to address challenges. Windows as a service will deliver smaller feature updates two times per year, around March and September, to help address these issues. DEFINITIONS •Feature updates will be released twice per year, around March and September. As the name suggests, these will add new features to Windows 10, delivered in bite-sized chunks compared to the previous practice of Windows releases every 3-5 years. •Quality updates are released monthly, delivering both security and non-security fixes. These are cumulative, so installing the latest quality update is sufficient to get all the available fixes for a specific Windows 10 feature update. •Insider Preview builds are made available during the development of the features that will be shipped in the next feature update, enabling organizations to validate new features as well as compatibility with existing apps and infrastructure, providing feedback to Microsoft on any issues encountered. Device Compatibility Device compatibility in Windows 10 is also very strong; new hardware is not needed for Windows 10 as any device capable of running Windows 7 or later can run Windows 10. In fact, the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 10 are the same as those required for Windows 7.
